Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy

Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split.

 INXS with JD FORTUNE
OK, their lead singer died, but no one deserved such a shameless disrespect to Michael Hutchence's memory. And then the best they can do is some Vegas wannabe Lizard King named JD Fortune? They should have just formed a whole new band and changed their name. They could have called themselves NOXS.

THE DOORS with IAN ASTBURY
These guys actually DID change their name — TWICE. They’ve called themselves Doors of the 21st Century and Riders on the Storm, but it didn't matter or help. This was a total train wreck in every way. Thankfully, Ian Astbury came to his senses and returned his real family, the Cult.

QUEEN with PAUL RODGERS
The remaining members of Queen think that keeping Paul Rodgers’ name separate from the band name on the marquee will cause people to forget that he's not a band wrecker. Wrong! He's still a band wrecker, and Freddie is turning over in his grave for sure.

JOURNEY with About Every Other Singer in the World
This band has gone through three different lead singers all trying to replace the signature man-chick wail of original vocalist Steve Perry. Each one had been a bigger embarrassment than the last. In the immortal words of Pete Townshend, "It's the singer not the song that makes the music move along."

What about "My Dead Uncle's Band" ??? They had to put up with Jonny Volcano and that guy was lame.

In reference to Michelle's earlier post...Steve Perry had a health issue and had to leave the band...it had nothing to do with egos....talking about egos...has anyone heard the new G-n-R cd? I think Axl should set aside his big ego and get back with the original members....

Stupid article. Many people liked Van Halen better with Sammy than with DLR. It's a very polarizing issue - either you liked them better with Sammy or you didn't. Obviously the writer didn't.

(And you can't call Paul Rogers a band wrecker when he joined after Freddy died.) I was never into INXS or the Doors, so I can't comment on those groups. About the only one he got right was Journey, but a lot of their lineup changes were due to Neal Schon's dictatorship over that band.

To go more fringe: I still like Helloween with Andi Deris, and Michael Kiske brought his downfall upon himself by pushing the band in a horrid direction, but there's no denying Kiske is one of the great singers in metal.

I think The Doors and Queen should be omitted.. they really didn't have a choice about getting their singers back ..The Doors did change their name and ian is a great singer .. it was interesting if anything.. and Queen is at least saying with Paul.. for the common listen Paul rogers and brain may wouldn't mean much .. at least Paul isn't trying to out do or be Freddy

INXS. your right about that one , even if they didn't have a choice

what about Motley Crue..Kurabi, Iron Madien with whoever that guy was, styx ..

All I have to say is that Steve Perry was Journey. No one could ever replace that voice (one of a kind). They definitely should have changed the name if they were going to continue on after Steve left.

I agree with 33 ww

What about Axl Rose? What a loser! Guns N Roses could've been huge. Too bad for his ego.

Whoah!!! hold on!!! before you make a comment on Journey's move on getting a new frontman.. why don't you listen first before making your comment... the new guy (Arnel Pineda) sings way better and performs with a lot more energy than the old guy... I've seen both performances and boy!!! This new Journey Guy can really belt it out!!!he ROCKS!!!!

I can't stand Journey's new lead singer, he doesn't fit right for me. And I have the cd where he sings on it with the songs redone. HORRIBLE!!

32. RP -
what's wrong with the guys in Queen wanting to make music again? and Paul Rodgers is one of the best rock singers of all time...what are they all supposed to do? nothing? gimme a break

33. Colin D -
I knew Journey would be on this list.

34. Kyle -
Van Hagar is a lot better than Daimond Dave

35. reefermadness -
Guns N Roses. Need I really say more?

36. Angela -
Arnel Pineda is great with Journey. it's obvious no one will be as great as Steve but he comes damn close

37. Jeff -
Or, now this is radical and some people might find it impossible, but if you don't like a band's new singer....don't listen to them and stop complaining about it instead of making rules that bands, who you are not a part of, should follow.

38. Jzn -
You forgot Axel Rose!

39. MikeS -
They forgot Gowan who destroyed Styx,
Ian was great with The Doors wrong deal there.
Jims dead wake him up

40. wettonfan -
At least ASIA was good for 15 years with John Payne on lead vocals while John Wetton went solo.
