Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy

Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split.

 INXS with JD FORTUNE
OK, their lead singer died, but no one deserved such a shameless disrespect to Michael Hutchence's memory. And then the best they can do is some Vegas wannabe Lizard King named JD Fortune? They should have just formed a whole new band and changed their name. They could have called themselves NOXS.

THE DOORS with IAN ASTBURY
These guys actually DID change their name — TWICE. They’ve called themselves Doors of the 21st Century and Riders on the Storm, but it didn't matter or help. This was a total train wreck in every way. Thankfully, Ian Astbury came to his senses and returned his real family, the Cult.

QUEEN with PAUL RODGERS
The remaining members of Queen think that keeping Paul Rodgers’ name separate from the band name on the marquee will cause people to forget that he's not a band wrecker. Wrong! He's still a band wrecker, and Freddie is turning over in his grave for sure.

JOURNEY with About Every Other Singer in the World
This band has gone through three different lead singers all trying to replace the signature man-chick wail of original vocalist Steve Perry. Each one had been a bigger embarrassment than the last. In the immortal words of Pete Townshend, "It's the singer not the song that makes the music move along."

Folks, you cant really count AIC in this list, as when they have toured after Layne's death, it has been Jeery Cantrell doing vocals, which if any of you were true fans, would know he sang on ALOT of their songs, either accompanying Layne, or just himself. Albeit, Layne was an incredible voice, and Jerry not nearly as strong, but at least they didnt try to get another to "replace" Layne's vocals, they went and did it themselves, minus Layne. Not quite the same as the examples given on this list. That, and even taking into Layne's vocals and stage presence, the real driving force behind AIC was Jerry all along.

VH was better with Sammy!

Always was a Sammy Hagar fan and I even liked Van Hagar, but LOVED Van Halen....As INXS....yeah, I like JD as well....some times you just have to be accepting and move on.....

OMG, I agree about the Journey comment here!!! I have been a Journey fan since the begining and if Neal just would have waiting for Steve Perry's hip to heal they would not be an embarrassment now. They still have time to capture the Journey they once were. It's not too late.

Van Halen was on the downhill slide long before Sammy came along. He just took them to the bottom a little quicker!

I thought it was very exciting to see Astbury play with the Doors. I always thought he'd be a good fill in for the long lost, Morrisson.

They replaced Freddy Murcury? HOW COULD THEY!?!? NO ONE CAN REPLACE FREDDY!!!

Boy Shawn,

Talk about a negative nancy boy. I'm just dying to know why you have such a low-self-esteem. I don't see you in any mega bands.

I saw ian and the doors, they rocked the house in dalla. in 35 years i have never seen a better show and i have seen it all from Zepplin in 1977 to REM a few years ago. Dont knock it till you have seen it live!

vanhalen made more money with hagar than they did with diamond dave. Did sammy soung good who cares vanhalen was terrible with diamond dave.

I have to agree that finding Fortune on TV was tasteless, though, especially considering that they went to TV to replace a man who suddenly died.

with all do respect graves did not destroy the misfits.....Jerry only did....Thats why he is all alone now

"Change the name of the band if the singer leaves or dies?" That's stupid. What about the new "Guns and Roses?" The only original member is Axl, and he's a moron. Without Slash, Duff and Izzy, it's simply Axl trying to regain his former glory. It's like the Who without Entwhistle and Keith Moon - they were just as responsible as Peter and Roger for the "sound" of that band. They're gone and now it's just a tribute band featuring Pete and Roger.

I thought Ian did a good job with The Doors. Of course it's not the same, but he's an awesome singer and did pretty good.

What a ridicules article. I can’t believe yahoo put this crap on their page.

They forgot Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio...

im just glad motley crue never got rid of nikki sixx...even tho he can't play bass to save his life! =-P

but as far as replacing a band member, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do as an artist. Some call it selling out, and others call it business. You gotta remember, they need to make money too!!

Sammy didn't ruin Van Halen at all. Van Halen/Hagar were both good in their own ways and were very successful.

Steve Perry didn't ruin Journey. Jonathan Cain did it with all his sappy songwriting.

Alice in Chains is NOT AIC without Layne Staley.

so if deadonmisfire had his way Iron Maiden and Genesis would have had to change their names when they lost their original singers? what a fool

120. M S -
get a grip...sammy hagar might have lacked on stage persona but was quite good - any groupd have given a guitar and a drum kit for a singer like that. you want real bad ones - blaze bailey in iron maiden. nothing tops that. if you think about - rainbow, deep purple, dio, black sabbath, ritchie blackmore and his sundry groups, there have never been a regular lead and yet it always fit with this extended family. ripper owens was about as good as halford, but i guess its kind of like a step mom feeling.
