Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy

Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split.

 INXS with JD FORTUNE
OK, their lead singer died, but no one deserved such a shameless disrespect to Michael Hutchence's memory. And then the best they can do is some Vegas wannabe Lizard King named JD Fortune? They should have just formed a whole new band and changed their name. They could have called themselves NOXS.

THE DOORS with IAN ASTBURY
These guys actually DID change their name — TWICE. They’ve called themselves Doors of the 21st Century and Riders on the Storm, but it didn't matter or help. This was a total train wreck in every way. Thankfully, Ian Astbury came to his senses and returned his real family, the Cult.

QUEEN with PAUL RODGERS
The remaining members of Queen think that keeping Paul Rodgers’ name separate from the band name on the marquee will cause people to forget that he's not a band wrecker. Wrong! He's still a band wrecker, and Freddie is turning over in his grave for sure.

JOURNEY with About Every Other Singer in the World
This band has gone through three different lead singers all trying to replace the signature man-chick wail of original vocalist Steve Perry. Each one had been a bigger embarrassment than the last. In the immortal words of Pete Townshend, "It's the singer not the song that makes the music move along."

Queen without Freddie was like a salad without dressing. Blah.

I saw Queen w/Paul Rogers in San Diego. He is not trying to replace Freddy Mercury nobody can. These guy just want to rock they are musicians. What do you want them to do. The show I saw was cool mix of Queen and Bad Company. Now Journey I would never see they SUCK without Steve Perry. what a joke, lil asian dude

The Allman brothers were never the same after Duane died. Dickey Betts was a good guitar man but a one hit wonder . And after keith moon and Entwhistle died, wht call it the WHO anymore??

you left off the list john corabi replacing vince neil of motley crue

I'd have to go with John Bush replacing Joey Belladonna in Anthrax. Joey was a replacement also, of Neil Turbin, but was the voice that made Anthrax. John Bush is good in Armored Saint but took Anthrax in the wrong direction.

I saw Journey on tour with Heart and Cheap Trick this summer and they sounded awesome. Their lead singer hit every note and nailed every song. I have to say that he is better than Steve Perry and his stage presence was phenomenal. Journey is better that ever!

He was dead on with Van Halen. Sammy brought a dimension to the group. David Lee is a feak. The Red Rocker still RULES!

Van Halen with Sammy Hagar had many more hits than with Diamond Dave. That's a fact. They were also much more stable. And since they did the splits with Hagar, what has happened? Hagar has one or two hits ("Mas Tequilla" for one), Van Halen has zero and Roth has zero.

I liked Van Halen with either singer, but it sounds to me like Hagar is the most successful out of any of the people involved in this particular free-for-all.

Dude, I am an original David Lee Roth fan from back in the old Van Halen days....like Sammy or not, they still sold a zillion CDs with him as a front man...so....are we going for your personal choices or the amount of CDs sold?

You dont know what you're talking about with Journey. Arnel Pineda is even better than Steve Perry!

Freddie Mercury was awesome- but if I ever I felt like someone could fill his shoes- its George Michael- if you have never seen the tribute concert with GM singing Somebody to Love watch it on YouTube- its perfect- it gave me chills!!!!!!!!

DUMB

Stupid writer should do research before making a useless report like this.
Van Halen-better without Roth. You tube them now, its brutal.
INXS- It was the bands decision, not JD's. He was the best contender for the job.
The Doors-Ian is a great frontman, and anyone can sing a doors song. Why not?
Queen-my lease favorit reunion, but who can replace Freddie, he is still out there.
Journey-Arnel Pineda is better than Steve Perry, and no mention of him...writer kinda hid from that one.

Van Halen will always be my favorite band from the 80's. Things went wrong once Dave left - Sammy sounded good, but it wasn't the same.

I was around for all these bands and Journey was my favorite. It broke my heart when Steve left. I will not attend any of their concerts because they are not Journey without Steve. They are not worth it anymore. Sorry, but that is my opinion. If Steve were to return, that would be a wonderful concert.

what about the new singer of drowning pool, totally killed that great band

This blog is for entertainment..haha. For the most part I'd have to agree. The new singer for Journey, well, he's a joke! But if anyone watched Freddy Mercury's life story, you would know that he absolutly loved Paul Rodgers..(which is a musical genious),and he wouldn't be turning in his grave...he'd be smiling...try listening to some Free or the earlier Bad Company. Paul isn't trying to replace Freddy...and it's only temporary

I agree. Chuck Negron is perhaps one of the most prolific beautiful singer in the country today. You all know Chuck. From three dog night. Chuck performs with another band that sounds exactly like TDN but with his voice still perfect, I cannot imagine the 3 dognightmare that has replaced him
