Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy

Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split.

 INXS with JD FORTUNE
OK, their lead singer died, but no one deserved such a shameless disrespect to Michael Hutchence's memory. And then the best they can do is some Vegas wannabe Lizard King named JD Fortune? They should have just formed a whole new band and changed their name. They could have called themselves NOXS.

THE DOORS with IAN ASTBURY
These guys actually DID change their name — TWICE. They’ve called themselves Doors of the 21st Century and Riders on the Storm, but it didn't matter or help. This was a total train wreck in every way. Thankfully, Ian Astbury came to his senses and returned his real family, the Cult.

QUEEN with PAUL RODGERS
The remaining members of Queen think that keeping Paul Rodgers’ name separate from the band name on the marquee will cause people to forget that he's not a band wrecker. Wrong! He's still a band wrecker, and Freddie is turning over in his grave for sure.

JOURNEY with About Every Other Singer in the World
This band has gone through three different lead singers all trying to replace the signature man-chick wail of original vocalist Steve Perry. Each one had been a bigger embarrassment than the last. In the immortal words of Pete Townshend, "It's the singer not the song that makes the music move along."

Iron Maiden was better with their "new" singer Bruce Dickinson after they got rid of Paul Di'anno.

AC/DC became even bigger with Brian Johnson, and this was replacing a signature front man like Bon Scott

Van Halen was just as successful with Hagar...I will admit their sound was a little more pop...but it didn't ruin the band.

So, replacing a singer can work.

Tom Delonge - Blink-182

Micheal Graves killed The Misfits...

Haha

Or how 'bout AC/DC... You should know what I'm talkin' about..

Steve Perry was and is awesome. He sent many a girls heart a flutter. I do agree also, that the new guy sounds very close...but Steve is still Steve ! I understand he back up north now. HE knows his voice was what brought Journey it's greatness ! (Oh, ya, plus the other guys.)

I totally agree with the Michael McDonald thing. The Doobies should be on this list.

Craig Mabbit is killing Escape the Fate. Radke was the heart of that band.

The Van Halen thing was kinda weak. They had a lot more commercial success without Dave than with him. The bad had to turn down their instruments a half octave because he couldn't sing on pitch. And if you saw then in concert with Dave, he never sang the songs. He just talked the lyrics. You can see the songs were getting worse with each album, as he sang less and talked more.

At least with Sammy they had a series of #1 albums and singles. And he sang the songs. I saw both in concert, and Hagar blew away Roth for showmanship.

And the Journey one is tough. It's hard to blame a band for replacing a singer that left them for medical reasons, when he wasn't the original singer. Sure, Journey had almost all of its success with Steve Perry, but wasn't the whole band. Neil Schon is a brilliant guitarist and is also largely responsible for their success.

Most of this list IS funny & true. Van Halen.....SERIAL CHEATERS!!!! LOL! I must disagree with Queen being on this list though. NO ONE will ever touch Freddie, but that band still deserves to play out. I think Rodgers adds a touch of class without stepping on Freddie's memory...Just my humble opinion...

Yes Arnel is wonderful and a very sweet guy to boot.
Of coarse no one can replace Perry but Arnel sounds pretty damn close. Dont put Journey on this list..This guy always screws up every list! Lets not forget the worst ever which didnt last long thank goodness, Corabi trying to replace Vince Neil! NEVER!!! Vince is one of a kind and a very cool guy, I have had the pleasure of meeting him several times and always a sweetheart!

I totally disagree with you deadonmisfire...If that were the case, there's no telling what would have happened to AC/DC or Black Sabbath if they had to change up....Great names for great bands who are STILL kicking it...

Steve Perry was and always will be Journey! Rock on

153. Andria -
Man, I loved Sammy Hagar with Van Halen!!

154. MRS. HOPKINS -
I love the new Journey frontman Arnel Pineda. hope I'm lucky enough to get to see them soon. Sorry Steve Perry you picked the side lines .So enjoy the show from your couch.

Personally, I mildly enjoyed Van Halen with Diamond Dave and really liked them with Sammy Hagar. Sammy is much more personable than Dave. Dave is too full of himself.

You know, RUSH has sucked ever since they replaced their drummer with that Neil Peart lemon...just kidding. I would say that while their music is still great, Geddy's voice has gotten monotonous in my mind. Id like to see a power vocalist, maybe a female, sing a couple of tracks with them on a future album. I will say, tho, that Snakes and Arrows is their best album in a while.

As for Journey, speaking as one that remembers their was a Journey before The Nose came along, their best music was on the first two albums. So change your count to FOUR singers after their best music!

158. C K -
doors... wtf were you thinkin? no one beats the man.

actually i think paul rogers a has done a very good job as becoming the new lead singer of queen..and van halen had a few good hits wit sammy. anyway thats just my opinion..buy the way my spelling suck !

I was appalled when Queen tapped Paul Rodgers to sing in place of Freddie -- but then saw them on TV. OMG. Paul has Freddie's theatrics and voice down pat. So that's one diss I can't go along with. Also, from what I've read, Paul was Freddie's pick to replace him when he knew he was dying.

Also, I liked Van Hagar much better than Van Halen. Sammy was a much better singer and not the caricature DLR had become.
