Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy

Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split.

 INXS with JD FORTUNE
OK, their lead singer died, but no one deserved such a shameless disrespect to Michael Hutchence's memory. And then the best they can do is some Vegas wannabe Lizard King named JD Fortune? They should have just formed a whole new band and changed their name. They could have called themselves NOXS.

THE DOORS with IAN ASTBURY
These guys actually DID change their name — TWICE. They’ve called themselves Doors of the 21st Century and Riders on the Storm, but it didn't matter or help. This was a total train wreck in every way. Thankfully, Ian Astbury came to his senses and returned his real family, the Cult.

QUEEN with PAUL RODGERS
The remaining members of Queen think that keeping Paul Rodgers’ name separate from the band name on the marquee will cause people to forget that he's not a band wrecker. Wrong! He's still a band wrecker, and Freddie is turning over in his grave for sure.

JOURNEY with About Every Other Singer in the World
This band has gone through three different lead singers all trying to replace the signature man-chick wail of original vocalist Steve Perry. Each one had been a bigger embarrassment than the last. In the immortal words of Pete Townshend, "It's the singer not the song that makes the music move along."

Ever see a 50+ year old guy dress like he's fronting a 70's hair band? Somewhere between embarrassing and pitiful.

Sometimes you just gotta realize it's time to pack it. Sucks when a tribute band sounds better than the original.

SAMMY HAGAR SUCKED

I actually saw The Doors with Ian Astbury and strongly disagree. The music was absolutely fantastic and the show wasn't much about Ian but more on how talented the band is, even without Jim. I thought he filled in adequately.

I think INXS ROCKS with the new lead singer, even if he was picked on tv.

Journey should not be on this list, they are nailing it right now. The new CD is exactly what the fans wanted! Hats off to them.

Nah dude, the "new" Alice in Chains is still pretty sweet. They sounded just like their albums on tour, even with the new guy.

I don't know why everyone bashes Phil Collins so much - he is a GREAT singer - my favorite Genesis period is immediately after Gabriel left until ABACAB. "Wind and Wuthering" and "Seconds Out" are two of my all time favorite recordings.

After that, they went thoroughly pop, which I didn't like. Form the album "Genesis" forward, they have been a bore.

But I can't blame them TOO much - they went for years and years having more or less a massive "cult" following, and not true super stardom.

Also, Gabriel was pretty silly - all his weird costumes and theatrics are kind of embarrassing to look at now.

um... Greg Rolie was the original singer for Journey. Just for the record.

Other than AC/DC, are there any bands that did as well or better with a new singer?

hey deadonmisfire, you idiot...Audioslave palyed both Rage, and Soungarden songs...and Velvet Revolver played both STP and Guns songs...and both were awesome...you are so dumb

One thing you left out or maybe another article could be written about this. When Cliff Burton died, Metallica became a different band. Completely different. They had most of ...And Justice for All written without a bassline, before Jason showed up. Cliff dying killed Metallica as we knew it. And for years they've tried to be as good without him.

Hey. Ian Atsbury is an awsome frontman. but i don;t think the doors songs are right for him. That would have been an interesting show.

I agree that Queen + Paul Rodgers should probably not be. Nobody can come close to Freddie Mercury. However, Paul Rodgers was one of Freddie's favorite singers - so it's possible he is happy looking down. Though...honestly, I think Paul Rodgers' blues-rock style just doesn't work well with Queen. They would do better to just have Brian May and Roger Taylor sing all the stuff - it sounds better.

Sorry guys- Steve Perry is Steve Perry and there is no replacement. Period. "He sounds identical!!" is not Steve Perry. Frank Calendo sounds identical to John MAdden. Nuff said. Same goes for Michael Hutchence. Other than that, this author is WAY off base. Ian Astbury with the Doors was great as was Paul Rogers- who said he was going to sing his way and not like Freddy Mercury who is also irreplaceable. I'm sorry but I distinctly remember multiple #1's with Sammy Hagar out front of Van Halen? Don't think Diamond Dave has any of that action...

Dave you are the greatest and an icon and no one will take that away. Gary Cherone was better with Extreme. This article sucks.

Van Halen with Sammy Hagar was a much better band than when they were fronted by cartoon character David Lee Roth. Van Halens best CD's and singles were during the Hagar era as well.........I've seen footage of DLR's attempted return to the stage..and he's still an idiot.....
As far as Journey, Steve Perry will always be the voice of Journey to those of us who grew up in the late 70's/early 80's.....that being said, Arnel has done a remarkable job with them and has added a spark to the band that has been gone completely since Perry left.

You really need to find a local chapter of narcanon that has an opening for a village idiot. Or maybe you can just hitch a ride to Crawford, TX when THEIR village idiot finally ends his hijinks and goes home to play in his sandbox.

David Lee Roth is and was a joke. Van Hagar was sooooomuch better when Sammy joined them.

The band was finally acceptable to anyone over the age of 15!!!!!!!!!

And as a longtime Paul Rodgers fan, I can honestly say that he has done justice to the FM brand and is a very able front man for Queen.

Sometime, change is actually for the better.

Can't agree with putting Hagar on here. The band took a new direction with him and he really is the better singer of the 2. David Lee Roth the better front man. We got two good groups out of the deal instead of one. Same thing with Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio

Steve Perry wasn't the "original" voice of Journey, but he was the one who made them famous. Personally, I loved Steve Augeri's voice, and I think Arnel Pineda's pretty awesome. Neither Augeri nor Pineda have the same "rough" quality Perry did, but that's not necessarily a bad thing...

I disagree with Van Halen being on this list. Sammy Hagar did not destroy the band, he's a good singer
