U2 and the Bands Who Pretend To Be Them

Posted Tue Jul 22, 2008 2:00pm PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Are you sitting down? It's been 28 years since U2's debut release. 28 freaking YEARS! That's older than the median age of most dudes on the rock charts these days. You were probably in high school when you first heard U2. You're hopefully not in high school now. 28 years. I just have to say it out loud again.

Today U2's first three albums, Boy (1980), October (1981), and War (1983) have been re-released to remind us of their humble Dublin beginnings. And while some would say they've worn out their welcome, I say that any band who stays together, works hard, and plays every show like it's their last is all right with me. They've made the world safe for anthemic rock. Any modern rock band who plays two chords before jumping a dramatic octave owes something to U2.

Here are three bands who wouldn't exist without U2. I'm sure you'll have your opinions. Go ahead and have at it. I can take it.

THE KILLERS
Listen to "Mr. Brightside." Ignore the matching '80s suits and listen to that guitar sound and the bass pumping out root notes. Sound familiar?

RADIOHEAD
Before they beautifully detoured into art rock esoterica, Radiohead was vying for the anthem rock throne. Their aching "High And Dry" was offered up as their version of "With Or Without You."

COLDPLAY
They stole U2's producer. They stole U2's iPod commerical. They stole U2's super-sincerity. They are U2 with a piano.

Okay, first post, and only because I take this all very personally. W.B. and Mr. F, if you actually paid attention to what those musical geniuses we know as U2 do and say, the Edge acknowledged long ago, that he was a fan of Radiohead, and that they were an influence on his work on Pop. It was also acknowledged that Radiohead's sound was apparent on that album and subsequent albums. All of them are good bands, and yes, they all have their own distinctive sounds, and we love them for it. But anyway, the point of the article was that all those bands were influenced by U2, and no one, none of you, can deny that they are the Original of the Species.

Seriously, U2 has never been innovative? Come on.

I'm guessing that some of you are only about 20 years old because "Achtung Baby" changed the way music sounded and was produced for nearly 6 years.

If you don't believe me go back and Listen to Radiohead's "Pablo Honey" (Not so great), then listen to "OK Computer" (Absolutely brilliant). The influence that "Achtung Baby" had on Radiohead and everybody else making music that mattered was not only quantifiable, but extremely welcome.

Radiohead in turn upped the ante with "OK Computer", changing the way modern music has been made since. Without "Achtung Baby there would be no "OK Computer" and without "OK Computer" there would be no "Rush Of Blood To The Head" by Coldplay.

They are all artists working with their own tools in a medium that has been and will continue to be passed down from generation to generation. Radiohead is an amazing band and like them their fanboys should give credit where credit is due.

Not one, I repeat, NOT ONE, not one band out there past present future will ever be as spectacular as U2. I have been a huge fan since 1982. Bono’s satin voice, Edge’s haunting riffs, and the love affair between Larry’s beats and Adams bass can not nor ever will compare to anyone or thing.
They are one of the great bands of all time.

I've seen Radiohead live twice now. it is an amazing, soul wrenching experience. I think U2's ability to be user-friendly makes them a great band. I believe Radioheads ability to continue to evolve musically while still keeping a sound that is unique, time and time again, makes them even Greater.

jesus...what a bad comparison..I grew up in the 80's and 90's and was a fan of u2..radiohead has progressed musically with every album where u2 has been stuck in the middle, no pun intended..
radiohead doesnt need kmart to sponsor a tour they have there fans...

Ummm....the Killers are a great band, and I completely love U2...I'm so-so on both Coldplay and Radio head, although I like Radiohead more than Coldplay. To act as if The Killers aren't fit to be listed with any of these bands, especially U2 who has publicly mentioned how much they like The Killers, and Coldplay who actually covered the Killers' "When you were young" live, seems just a bit snotty.

Coldplay likes to rip off other peoples stuff...their current #1 is a ripoff of another band that they are currently in a lawsuit with...get your own stuff Coldplay!

I don't buy any of it! Each of these bands are very original. Are musicians influenced by things they hear? Of course! To say they consciously rip off other bands when they are creating is absolutely idiotic!

u2 was first, they win in court

Uh...... An article about bands that stole U2's sound. Doesn't anyone remember the CLASH. You know, the band U2 stole their sound from when they started out.

The Bravery sounds like they were a U2 cover band. Almost all their songs have a U2 flavor. Glad to hear that the first 3 U2 CDs have been re-released. Now if they could only release Under a Blood Red Sky, Live at Red Rocks, on DVD. It's U2's best concert vid.

U2 IS the greatest band of all time!!! If you were to sit down and really listen to ColdPlay, Radiohead and The Killers, you can hear alittle U2 influence. We all have that one band who just sparks our creativity, and U2 has that.

39. troy b -
We can all sit around and debate all day which band is better- and we'll all have different answers. But as far as popularity, U2 smokes both these bands COMBINED. Love em or hate em, U2 are icons ad the other two are just bands. Wanna know how popular U2 is? Go ask a kid in the hood in South Central LA if he's ever hear of U2, and he'll say "of course". Now go ask them who Radiohead or Coldplay is and they'll look at you with a blank stare. Again, we can argue music cred all day, but the people (and the world) have spoken regarding THEIR choice.

U2

That is ridiculous. None of these bands "ripped off" U2. You need your ears checked. This blog blows.
