U2 and the Bands Who Pretend To Be Them

Are you sitting down? It's been 28 years since U2's debut release. 28 freaking YEARS! That's older than the median age of most dudes on the rock charts these days. You were probably in high school when you first heard U2. You're hopefully not in high school now. 28 years. I just have to say it out loud again.

Today U2's first three albums, Boy (1980), October (1981), and War (1983) have been re-released to remind us of their humble Dublin beginnings. And while some would say they've worn out their welcome, I say that any band who stays together, works hard, and plays every show like it's their last is all right with me. They've made the world safe for anthemic rock. Any modern rock band who plays two chords before jumping a dramatic octave owes something to U2.

Here are three bands who wouldn't exist without U2. I'm sure you'll have your opinions. Go ahead and have at it. I can take it.

THE KILLERS
Listen to "Mr. Brightside." Ignore the matching '80s suits and listen to that guitar sound and the bass pumping out root notes. Sound familiar?

RADIOHEAD
Before they beautifully detoured into art rock esoterica, Radiohead was vying for the anthem rock throne. Their aching "High And Dry" was offered up as their version of "With Or Without You."

COLDPLAY
They stole U2's producer. They stole U2's iPod commerical. They stole U2's super-sincerity. They are U2 with a piano.

WHAT? RADIOHEAD "RIPPED OFF" U2? I agree with the Coldplay comparison, which ironically enough, Coldplay also CLEARLY ripped off Radiohead with their early stuff... That's it Yahoo. It's entirely Google and Gmail for me now...

142. Stash -
I like poop.

143. Mando E -
I strongly disagree. The killers have more of a Queen sound. And brandon flowers sometimes even appears to mimic some of the crazy things that made freddy mercury who he was. And Radiohead are you serious??? High and Dry is a version of With or Without You? Come the f on. High and Dry is a good song much like With or Without You but the two can hardly be compared. And lastly Colplay??? Coldplay resembles simon and garfunkle more than U2 anyday. They have one song that may be a little U2ish but can one song really put you in the same company as one of the best bands out there? U2 is iconic and if this would have been done properly i bet you could have found some bands that really are products of the U2 sound. And all 3 of the bands mentioned are grerat bands but to compare them to U2 is like comparing them to eachother you just cant. If you really want to compare a band to what might be a little more along the lines of being a product of that U2 sound why not look at the foo fighters. its not balls on but its alot closer than the killers, radiohead, and coldplay.

ARE YOU INSANE?! I agree with Joe C. Although Radiohead, ColdPlay & The Killers are to die for, U2 Was here the first. Because of U2 we have bands such as these. I'm sure those who think the named bands above are what made u2. I don't think so... Obviously they're young people (15-20) who don't know what they're talking about.

I think we are talking about influence here. I love all three bands, but I have to say I am a big U2 fan, so I might be biased. But Chris Martin has ADMITTED to keeping a picture of U2 in his studio to remind him of where he wants to be as a musician. I think he sees U2 not only as a band to surpass, but as inspiration of what music can do. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has their influences. U2 included. Look at how many different inspiring places U2 has picked up sound and then turned it into meaningful music. I don't think the article intends to say the bands are copy cats, only that they would not be as progressive without the inspiration behind U2.

146. Elizabeth -
NOW! List u2 along with myriad others who have copied Siouxsie and the Banshees - Siouxsie!

147. SteveOhhh!!! -
What about Remy Zero? The theme song for the TV show Smallville, I thought it was U2 for the longest time.

Everybody steals from everybody...take a listen to "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin, then "Bullet the Blue Sky" by U2. Unless it's an homage, it's straight up larceny.

149. sabbac -
for those of you who werent born till after return of the jedi.....u2 was the bridge from punk to the alternative genre...we used to call it "college" rock. a genre Radiohead was a part of WAY LATER. it doesnt matter who influenced who really anymore but to say u2 ripped off radiohead is very telling. know your music people. no u2 (or the smiths or REM or the Cure for that matter) no Radiohead.

150. Heinz maui -
U2 wanted to be like the Ramones, the sexpistols and esp like the CLASH!!!!!!!!

Absolutely great blog. I am great U2 fan and really, its logevity is what U2 is all about. Long after Coldplay and Radiohead are just footnotes in rock history, U2 will still be on the top of the mountain. The others fail because they can't or won't step out on a limb and fall or stand on their own. They want to compete with U2 but they can't because they won't reach past U2.

152. Sore Fucking Loser -
A "fan" of U2 I am not, and as for the comments made about U2 taking some of their musical style from Radiohead, I can't agree or disagree, as I don't care for Radiohead much at all. But, all that said, ColdPlay is ABSOLUTELY U2 in disguise. Their music is not original at all, and is so much U2 that the first time I heard Viva La Vida, I thought it might have been U2, except for the voice.

Aside from all that, ColdPlay would definitely not be played on the radio if they didn't sound just like U2.

153. vinny -
theres only so much you can do on guitar without sounding like something else. Its all about what you do with the song that makes it, not what riff your playing. Besides, U2 in MY OPINION (so dont get offended if you love U2) is nothing special. I dont have the tolerance to hear Bono for anymore than 10 seconds without changing the station. Its funny bc were talkin about how bands ripped off U2 but no one talks about how much rap sounds a like nowadays.

154. chief -
U2 has withstood the test of time. Let's just see where Coldplay and all those other bands are in 10 years.

155. Jeffrey L -
Wow, what a surprise! Say the word "Radiohead" three times, click your heels, and a million geeks show up to circle jerk over what amazing "artists" Radiohead are. Transcendent this, innovative that. Hey, I have a good idea. Write some songs that sound good! You know what the only thing more overrated than Radiohead is? NOTHING.

156. Mandy -
Sure, U2 is iconic, but so is Radiohead--as are the Killers and Coldplay, for that matter. Each band has its own signature sound. I mean, it might be more fair to say that none of these bands would exist without Kraftwerk or The Beatles. I certainly wouldn't call U2 the center of music evolution. Sorry, Shawn, but I think you're wrong on this one.

157. M -
The Edge is the most overrated guitarist out there. Did anyone see that HBO special where he and Bono "interviewed" themselves and took turns patting themselves on the back for being such rock pioneers???? Bono explained that the "Edge" bought an echoplex and came up with this "new" sound. Hello!!! Any guitar player that has ever played or heard an echoplex knows all you do is click it on and it echoes over and over again. Nobody before the "Edge" had the nerve or lack of imagination to make that their ENTIRE style - playing the same note over and over again and letting the echoplex make you sound all trippy and deep. I love showing people how incredibly easy this "style" is on my guitar. They stand there amazed: "Wow you sound just like U2!" Please, the first album was great but they've been on a downhill slide musically ever since. They're only around because they're incredible sellouts and keep rehashing the same format over and over and over again. The record companies keep pushing this garbage down our throats is why they're still around. U2? **YAWN**

158. Yahoo! Music User -
this is all kind of pointless if you ask me. all of these are good bands. why does it matter if they have similar sounds. does that have to mean that one ripped off the other?
i think not.

...kissass ... Shawn Amos must be high on drugs. Anybody say Southpark's portrayal of Bono? :) a must-see!!

The writer of this artical is a dicbag. He hasnothing better to do than compare UK bands to other UK bands with the exception of the killers who should not be mentioned in the same sentence as U2
