5 Reasons Why...Neil Diamond Will Always Rock...Softly

Posted Wed Jun 25, 2008 10:59pm PDT by Gil Kaufman in GetBack

1) He's Seen 100 Million Faces...And Rocked Them All

Diamond's sold more than 100 million albums over the past 40+ years, but the bespangled man they call The Basher notched his first #1 in May of 2008 with his second Rick Rubin-produced return to form, Home Before Dark.

2) All the Cool Kids Are Obsessed With Him

He might seem square to you, but some of the coolest people you know have total man crushes on him. Cases in point: Quentin Tarantino used a cover of “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” in Pulp Fiction, Johnny Cash covered “Solitary Man,” and hip French DJ duo Justice walk onstage to the strains of “Sweet Caroline.” Oh, and he performed at The Band’s Last Waltz

3) Caroline-a on Our Minds, All the Time

Speaking of good ole “Sweet Caroline,” everyone you know has warbled that one at the karaoke bar at some point in their lives. Including you. Don’t bother trying to deny it. Plus, it’s the theme song to the Red Sox Nation, which totally rocks.

4) He Nearly Became The Original Eice, Eice Baby

Diamond was thisclose to picking the big pimpin’ stage name Eice Cherry at the start of his career. It was between that and Noah Kaminsky. But the man they call the Diamond Cutter and the Jewish Elvis was actually born Neil (ahem, Leslie) Diamond, which is the greatest stage name. . .ever. Well, except for the Leslie part.

5) Even If You Hate Him, You Still Kind Of Like Him

He’s the subject of one of the greatest comedic put-downs/compliments in film history, courtesy of the 1991 Bill Murray phobia laugher, What About Bob? In that film, Murray’s character states why he’s divorced explaining: “There are two types of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t.

When I was 12 my father gave me his old 8 track player and all of his Neil Diamond 8 tracks. I fell inlove with him instantly! When I was 18 my father took me and my best friend and her father to see Neil in concert when he was in Florida, that was one of the best days of my life! When I saw Neil in "The Jazz Singer", well he rocked my world!

This man is about as interesting as lint! He's a has-been that never-was in the first place. He has no voice, no personality and nothing to offer the music world!

We traveled from Cleveland to Dayton to see him several years ago...3 generations of us. The youngest was 5 at the time, and she sang along with most of the songs. We had really good seats, and Neil saw her in the crowd and acknoledged her. It was a real thrill. Now, we can't go to a karoake bar without my wife begging me to sing "Cracklin' Rose".

I wasn't a big fan until he came and sang the Star Spangled Banner at my graduation from The University of Colorado at Boulder in 2000. Totally awesome!

I'll give you 100 reasons why he doesn't rock. This is a sad, sad article.

its important for a functioning society to have idols to look up to. if an individual saw themselves as equally substantial as any other then personal liberation would occur and we would no longer need to vote or ask others to make decisions on our behalf. we wouldn't feel anyone is any better than us in any way. i for one wouldn't like that.

He is amazing, I have seen 2 of his concert with floor seats and I will never forget them. He actually came to Portland on my birthday a couple years back and sang the song I was named after,"Do you remember Desiree, oh Desiree". It was like he sang it just for me!! People ask why I like him, isn't he for old people? I have to respond I am 29 and that man rocks me more than most bands I have seen. He is the Jazzman and I will always be a fan!!! Thanks Neil for being so amazing and touching peoples inner music.

Years ago, my boyfriend did the lighting at the Troubador in LA. He said Neil Diamond was the show and did I want to come? I thought "zzzzzz". These were years of Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and other top bands.
With out a doubt, it was the best live show I have EVER seen. He had 15 people on stage with him, with about 200 people in the audience. Talk about cool. Super nice guy to talk to. I rate Neil a 10!
