5 Reasons Why...Neil Diamond Will Always Rock...Softly

Posted Wed Jun 25, 2008 10:59pm PDT by Gil Kaufman in GetBack

1) He's Seen 100 Million Faces...And Rocked Them All

Diamond's sold more than 100 million albums over the past 40+ years, but the bespangled man they call The Basher notched his first #1 in May of 2008 with his second Rick Rubin-produced return to form, Home Before Dark.

2) All the Cool Kids Are Obsessed With Him

He might seem square to you, but some of the coolest people you know have total man crushes on him. Cases in point: Quentin Tarantino used a cover of “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” in Pulp Fiction, Johnny Cash covered “Solitary Man,” and hip French DJ duo Justice walk onstage to the strains of “Sweet Caroline.” Oh, and he performed at The Band’s Last Waltz

3) Caroline-a on Our Minds, All the Time

Speaking of good ole “Sweet Caroline,” everyone you know has warbled that one at the karaoke bar at some point in their lives. Including you. Don’t bother trying to deny it. Plus, it’s the theme song to the Red Sox Nation, which totally rocks.

4) He Nearly Became The Original Eice, Eice Baby

Diamond was thisclose to picking the big pimpin’ stage name Eice Cherry at the start of his career. It was between that and Noah Kaminsky. But the man they call the Diamond Cutter and the Jewish Elvis was actually born Neil (ahem, Leslie) Diamond, which is the greatest stage name. . .ever. Well, except for the Leslie part.

5) Even If You Hate Him, You Still Kind Of Like Him

He’s the subject of one of the greatest comedic put-downs/compliments in film history, courtesy of the 1991 Bill Murray phobia laugher, What About Bob? In that film, Murray’s character states why he’s divorced explaining: “There are two types of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t.

Neil Diamond is one of the top 5 singers of all time. Neil in my eyes is better than Elvis , they are in the top 5 of all time. Jazz Singer , Hot August night. I grew up with my parents playing Neil on ther records and I was 5,6,7 and I still think he is great and I am in my 30s .

Neil Diamond IS the best singer for all generations:):) He's everyone's singer! I'm 55 and have loved him since I sat on the floor in a small tent-like venue in Rochester, NY where I grew up before he became the legend! Now, whenever I take a walk in Brooklyn, you know what I hearing !!!!

ps...he's got Elvis beat hands down ! Neil Diamond is THE ONE. Like Dylan and Petty, he knew what he wanted and didn't let anyone tell him different!! ROCK ON NEIL...love you forever!!

Neil Diamond may not be the most famous, but he is part of an elite group that not only do great music, but have class to top it off. So many are trashy looking (amy!)and maybe have a song or two to go down in the history books, but come on... look who is ageless!

104. RatMom -
The man looks pretty darn good for someone who-I believe-is almost 60..WOW!

I've seen Neil Diamond twice in concert and he
puts on a great show. I got into Neil's music
when I was a teen. And yes, I also love harder
rock n roll music. But Neil Diamond can still rock the house. His deep voice is still sexy-sounding. And if you did not see Neil Diamond
in 'The Jazz Singer,' you missed out on a good
movie. I have always loved Neil's music and I always will love Neil's beautiful variety of ballads and rock!
☺ ♥ Neil Diamond gets better with time. ♥ ☺

Neil Diamond has been around many years always brought happiness with his music. My all time favorites are Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon and I Am I Said both which have personal meanings for me. I will buy anything that he creates and sings because he has a "special quality" that only comes from a few.

Keep up the concerts and the Cd's. Love ya

I've got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go.

I have loved Neil for well over 40 years & his music has helped me get through some difficult times as well as some wonderful ones. I am going to his concert in October & it will be concert # 21 for me. At age 67, Neil is truly ageless, very sexy, and has Pretty Amazing Grace in any language. I loved him as a teenager & still do. He can rock my world like no one else!

How many artists do we know who can perform for a full two hour concert using only their own material and leave the audience of 50,000 plus wanting more- at 67! I rest my case. I am also a huge fan of Elvis (but he did not write his own) and of John Lennon. Neil is the best!!!! Wishing him many many more years of success

Of course everyone does not like Neil Diamond - Chris certainly does not! However, Chris, I have not a problem with being 'mainstream', you obviously have!!

I love ALL of Neil's songs, including his Tennessee Moon country album. Can't wait to see him in Sept. He's such a humble man and still looks sexy!!!!

Well, let's see I have seen every ND concert since 1971.. In the round, in Stadiums, Even went to 5 nights of his 1976 opening of the Las Vegas Alladin theater..No better performer, and no better band around.. How many artist still have the same band as they started with.. minus I believe a drummer.. Linda Press is a friend of my friend..no one better than her and Ronnie..ND makes his music personal and must consider and treat his band as family too to have them stay so long.. wonder how many of the current talents will be around in 40 years let alone still have the talent that ND has.. Go Neil.. and I have heard that current person in your life is deaf.. what a testament..shame she can't hear your glorious music..Keep singing!!

I've always been a Diamond fan.I wonder about his latest single which he did on A.I.: What
is "Pretty Amazing Grace" all about? Did he become a Christian? Thanks!

114. JASBO -
I SAW NEIL AT THE COW PALACE IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 1965 OR 1966. HE HAD ONLY ONE HOT SONG AT THE TIME. LOVED IT !!!! ALSO ON THE STAGE WERE PERCY SLEDGE, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE AND THE ORIGINAL BEACH BOYS. WHAT A SHOW. SOMETHING YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SEE AGAIN !!

I'm a mature woman; and I can speak for many of my friends who love Neil and have as long as he has been around. We already have tickets to see his one-night only performance in Portland Oregon this September. Love Neil?
Yes!

an amazing thing at many concerts (& this will be my 21st in Ocotber) is that there are those of us who have aged with Neil (he's a sexy 67!), but the younger fans (many in 20's)have been there as well & in full force...he is timeless and I have loved him and his music for well over 40 years...no one else does it better for me...

..whether ya name is Caroline, Julie, Desiree, Suzanne or any other name he could choose...the name's the same..the story's the same one...he rocks me gently in the beautiful noise that only he can make...creative manchild genius that he is...We are blessed by his presence and honored that God gave him a voice to sing for us to hear......

118. Debbie Padgett -
