Bands Who Are Better Broken Up

Posted Thu Aug 7, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack
VOTE: What band do you wish would reunite? Here's our pick.

The Police play their farewell show tonight at Madision Square Garden. They have said this is it for them. No more shows. No more albums. Bye bye, Police. Do we believe them? Dudes at that age with that much money don't need to tour.

Still, we've heard it before. The endless procession of bands saying "never again," citing "irreconcilable differences" only to hit the road one (or more) times when the paycheck gets big enough. Seems that no one says goodbye for good (except the Band; The Last Waltz really was the last waltz — except when they got back together a few years later. At least Robbie Robertson kept his word).

Here are five bands who couldn't stay apart, and evidence of why they should.

Van Halen
After burning through every other lead singer imaginable, I guess there was no other choice but to call up Diamond Dave again. Although, with Michael Anthony booted out of the band, it's not quite like the good old days. Here they are experiencing a first class train wreck playing their classic  "Jump."

The Pixies
Unlike most reunions, the Pixies sounded good when they got back together. Great on most nights. And at least they were honest about it. They wanted the money. After years of seeing other bands rip off their sound and get paid better, they deserved it. Plus, how much could David Lovering have made as a magician?

Stone Temple Pilots
The ultimate co-dependant rock family. The DeLeo brothers and their wayward step-brother Scott Weiland pretending like all those drug busts and and Velvet Revolver gigs never happened.

The Who
Does anyone remember that the Who had their first farewell tour in 1982? Twenty-six years and two original members later. . . It's a long goodbye.

Simon & Garfunkel
You gotta love the irony of two guys who can barely look at each other calling their reunion tour "Old Friends."

Creed should get back together. Their brand of self-righteous arena rock is more pumped up than Hinder, Nickelback and the emo crap combined.

2. Daniel -
Now that Dave Mustaine is rehabbed, he and Hetfield need to make up. Some of Metallica's best music was during the Mustaine era.

3. Glen -
I think Deep Purple should have stayed broken up, same with Testament, Exodus, and above all, Led Zeppelin. Probably the Violent Femmes too.
As for who should reunite... maybe Talking Heads and Primus.

4. Cristi -
Dead Kennedys. Had a great 8 year run. Then, the other members got greedy and decided to sell out (this is the only real case of "selling out" recorded in all of history, period.) and betray all the ideals they stood for. Jello tried to stop them.

It's really depressing.

Didn't one of the Yahoo writers just say that Sting was better with the Police than he was solo? Now they are better off broken up? You guys are spastic.

6. Klara T -
this list confuses me, some you say should stay broken up, and some shouldn't, so I'm not sure what you're going for and can't really comment...

Nah...Scott Stapp is doing fine on his own. No need to reunite with his band members who judged him and held him to perfection. Hes a man and a sinner just like all of us. They had no compassion for him. But judge not, lest ye be judged! So I'll shut up now lol.

8. Mike W -
Dude, if you want to make examples, don't put up the worst videos you can find where the camera used costs $500

9. Michael -
Van Halen sounded terrible there, but I went to see them in Charlotte, and, overall they were great. STP sounded fine in that video to me. They need new material. So does VH.

10. lifevibe -
Even the Police say they never should have reunited. Keep this breakup permanant.

11. Shawn -
STP is STILL awesome. The best show in rock and roll, and I for one, was glad to pay the money to see their reunion tour.

They are still in their prime, the other bands aren't.

No way thewho they rocked then they rock now!

Does anyone want to mention Led Zeppelin's reunion? NOT!

14. jw -
I think that the comment about Simon and Garfunkel is completely true.

15. lifevibe -
Well, Van Halen still sounds better with David Lee Roth.

16. Ashley B -
Who the hell are the The Police, so they had 1 mega album, and a few somewhat hit albums, only had what 5 top ten hits. big deal.

The Police, The Who are two bands that should never get together, they both suck, Fleetwoodmac are another.

Where is a reunion for THE CARS, TALKING HEADS!

17. Yahoo! Music User -
Van Halen wasn't THAT bad.. i mean they are in their 50's aren't they. Some people are way too critical.. oh, that's your job. I wish I had a job where I could sit and think of all the negative things to say about people. What a easy and, i'm sure, fulfilling life.

18. Jared A -
To Rick Howard creed should not get back together for one obvious reason Scott Stapp check out Alter Bridge they rip Creeds face off. And to Shawn Amos come on Van Halen, them reuniting was the best thing that happened in rock this year.

19. phillip -
Prince and the Revolution. Definitely. Prince, Wendy, Lisa, Levi Seacer Jr., Brownmark. Sheila E can replace Dr. Z. Maybe find Miko. Best music ever.

20. jd -
whoever said primus should reunite.....they already are....and are playing in san fran in a couple weeks. and they have had multiple tours the past 5 years
