Bands Who Are Better Broken Up

Posted Thu Aug 7, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack
VOTE: What band do you wish would reunite? Here's our pick.

The Police play their farewell show tonight at Madision Square Garden. They have said this is it for them. No more shows. No more albums. Bye bye, Police. Do we believe them? Dudes at that age with that much money don't need to tour.

Still, we've heard it before. The endless procession of bands saying "never again," citing "irreconcilable differences" only to hit the road one (or more) times when the paycheck gets big enough. Seems that no one says goodbye for good (except the Band; The Last Waltz really was the last waltz — except when they got back together a few years later. At least Robbie Robertson kept his word).

Here are five bands who couldn't stay apart, and evidence of why they should.

Van Halen
After burning through every other lead singer imaginable, I guess there was no other choice but to call up Diamond Dave again. Although, with Michael Anthony booted out of the band, it's not quite like the good old days. Here they are experiencing a first class train wreck playing their classic  "Jump."

The Pixies
Unlike most reunions, the Pixies sounded good when they got back together. Great on most nights. And at least they were honest about it. They wanted the money. After years of seeing other bands rip off their sound and get paid better, they deserved it. Plus, how much could David Lovering have made as a magician?

Stone Temple Pilots
The ultimate co-dependant rock family. The DeLeo brothers and their wayward step-brother Scott Weiland pretending like all those drug busts and and Velvet Revolver gigs never happened.

The Who
Does anyone remember that the Who had their first farewell tour in 1982? Twenty-six years and two original members later. . . It's a long goodbye.

Simon & Garfunkel
You gotta love the irony of two guys who can barely look at each other calling their reunion tour "Old Friends."

i just got out of a journey concert last night at walnut creek. steven perry may be gone, but this new guy sounds exactly like him. if youve got tickets to their concert, ur in for a show.

43. Freddy Fox -
The band that needs to reunite is Soundgarden. I like Cornell, but his solo stuff is crap and now that Morello and crew are back together in Rage, Cornell needs to give his old mates a call.

Ar eyou kidding me, Van Halen a train wreck? I saw them back in February and they were AWESOME. Eddie played great. I am glad I got to see this ledgendary guitarist play in person. Somethings you have to be there to see. C'mon it's a friggen You Tube video! What do you expect as far as quality? VH still rocks, despite their age.

45. Freddy Fox -
Also a Bell Biv Devoe reunion would be cool, lol.

46. Robert -
I think System of a Down should come back together Serj's single album is OK but nothing compared to System of a Down

47. Squeek -
I agree with Phillip O, Prince the the Revolution should get back. But only with the original members. He wrote his best with the Revolution, not this other crap NPG. Squeek Yuck! Although I love PRINCE to death, I hated that the real band split. Whadda gonna do....:)

The guy who wrote this should do his homework. Kieth moon died over 26 years ago. Only one member has died in that time frame.

49. Freddy Fox -
Hey Troy, do YOUR homework. Entwhistle died a few years ago.

50. michael c -
If this list is for bands that should stay broken up, then why did they write that the pixies sound good? So which is it?

51. Squeek -

52. erik m aka MAXQ -

54. Squeek -
Antonia, you're too young to know any of this. You probably know about grunge and some rock.

55. Oscar -
gotta have crass back together.

56. Anthony G -
I missed watching Genesis live. In the 80s and 90s, they always had great performances. It was great to see them together again, but their reunion performances were flat and slow. Now that they've had their reunion, I've had my fill--I'm not sure if there is a joke in there.

My brother saw Van Halen. He said the show was good, not great. He also said Black Sabbath's 2007 tour has turned him off to all reunion tours.

A friend saw The Police. She said, "Eeh, they were all right."

Greatest reunion: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. They still rock the old catalogue, but with the great new material, they never sound old, dated or tired.

57. Jessica -
I saw STP in one of their first concerts since getting back together and they were AWESOME! Just as good as when I saw them back in '97! The DeLeo bros and Weiland belong together! Best band of all time!

58. Squeek -
Hey Auggie: Didn't the Village People die of AIDS?

59. kevin -
the police were the best band in the 80s and i saw them twice in dallas and it was a great show. I don't know where anyone gets that they shouldn't have reunited for a concert tour, i thought they were great.

60. anna t -
would like a reo speedwagon reunion with gary richrath and ufo with michael schenker
