Bands Who Are Better Broken Up

Posted Thu Aug 7, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack
VOTE: What band do you wish would reunite? Here's our pick.

The Police play their farewell show tonight at Madision Square Garden. They have said this is it for them. No more shows. No more albums. Bye bye, Police. Do we believe them? Dudes at that age with that much money don't need to tour.

Still, we've heard it before. The endless procession of bands saying "never again," citing "irreconcilable differences" only to hit the road one (or more) times when the paycheck gets big enough. Seems that no one says goodbye for good (except the Band; The Last Waltz really was the last waltz — except when they got back together a few years later. At least Robbie Robertson kept his word).

Here are five bands who couldn't stay apart, and evidence of why they should.

Van Halen
After burning through every other lead singer imaginable, I guess there was no other choice but to call up Diamond Dave again. Although, with Michael Anthony booted out of the band, it's not quite like the good old days. Here they are experiencing a first class train wreck playing their classic  "Jump."

The Pixies
Unlike most reunions, the Pixies sounded good when they got back together. Great on most nights. And at least they were honest about it. They wanted the money. After years of seeing other bands rip off their sound and get paid better, they deserved it. Plus, how much could David Lovering have made as a magician?

Stone Temple Pilots
The ultimate co-dependant rock family. The DeLeo brothers and their wayward step-brother Scott Weiland pretending like all those drug busts and and Velvet Revolver gigs never happened.

The Who
Does anyone remember that the Who had their first farewell tour in 1982? Twenty-six years and two original members later. . . It's a long goodbye.

Simon & Garfunkel
You gotta love the irony of two guys who can barely look at each other calling their reunion tour "Old Friends."

Van Halen? What in the world are you thinking putting them on this list! These blogs are so stupid and are wrote by people who don't know music. The Eddie and Roth reunion is the best thing that has happend in music in the past 10 years!

I would love to see Journey get Steve Perry back. I would not see them again without him! It is so sad to watch Van Halen now.

103. Spidey -
No you're wrong there dustin the best that happen in music within the past ten years would be that Led Zeppelin reunion i england earlier this year and talks of a possiable tour.

Rick Howard, just one question for you: Are you...Are you joking??

Saw the Police. They were so good. The fact that Andy Summers is 65 and totally rocked the guitar is enough for me to go, but add a really cool drum solo by Stewart and Sting...mmmm...Sting..It was worth it. It was fun and they did it just for that.
However, this article really blows. The writing was silly and contradictory.

oh and the Who are awesome and I would see Journey if they had Steve Perry. Otherwise it is not the same. The Pixies were good and why are they on this list? Cars annd Talking Heads would be fun!

Who are the Pixies? One of the best and most influential rock bands to come out of Massachusetts in the mid/late 80's. Saw them in small clubs and big arena's opening for U2. They need to stay together. Pink Floyd should get back together. Fugazi needs to put out another album and hit the road again as well.

even though it hasn't happened yet PHISH should not get back together. I have a feeling they'll just disappoint at some level

creed shouldnt get back together despite just changing their lead singer to make the band alter bridge their new stuff sounds so much better

112. Nivek -
LOL! Funny seeing blink 182 mentioned in this. They need to get back together just for the fact that Angels and Airwaves is so ear bleedingly horribly awful and crappy, that its polluting airvwaves and tv shows everywhere :( SOMEONE SAVE US

livevibe made the comment about Van Halen sounds better with David Lee Roth..lol..I've been to see Van Halen with Both lead singers. One thing is very clear after seeing both Sammy with V.H. AND D.L.R. WITH V/H. Sammy is way better off with out V/H than with. His concerts are second to none. A Sammy Hagar concert will be the very best Rock & Roll performance money can buy in this day and age. Sammy has sold out 4 shows each year in ST.Louis for the last 10 years...Need I say more?

I don't know many of these bands, so them getting back together does not influence people in high school, since we don't know them very well. Hm, eh, maybe The Police, but because I remember it was mentioned in the show Friends, or something like that.

One thing not mentioned, these bands are still very much in demand and their fanbase includes pre-teens to senior citizens!

116. Barbara T -
All the members of KORN!!!!!

Van Halen sounded horrible! Made my cat howl.

118. Candi -
def..Metallica. Did the s.t.p video give anyone else hardcore flashbacks and a headache???

Beatles reunion - it'll never happen. Best rock band of all time, but John and George are forever gone.
Talking Heads reunion - it'll never happen. Years after the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, David Byrne flatly said that he would never, EVER reunite with the Heads ever again. C'est la vie.
Van Halen reunion was doomed right from the start. Wolfgang should stop touring and go back to school. He probably missed the senior prom already. I'm sorry, but I rather see Sammy and Michael perform than to see big-mouthed Roth acting like a fool onstage. I don't care what y'all think or say. It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
As for the Police, I'm glad they've reunited for one more round - just like Genesis. Now we'll all die happy.
The Who: give them a break. We know John and Keith are no longer here, but at least we have Pete and Roger. Even in their '60's they can still rock!
