The Best (and Not So Best) Comebacks of 2008

Posted Thu Dec 25, 2008 5:00am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

So ends another year, and like every 12 months it's filled with things you hate to see go and memories you couldn’t bury soon enough. This year brought us an unusually large number of comebacks. From Tina Turner to Neil Diamond to the Police, nearly every forgotten musician came back from the abyss to remind us why we shouldn't forget them. Only problem? Some of them are worth forgetting. You can't always go home again. Or come back. Here are my most welcomed and unwelcomed returns in 2008.

WELCOMED COMEBACKS

LED ZEPPELIN
OK, technically, this is a 2007 comeback. Zep played a December 10 one-off gig at London's O2 Arena as a tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. By all accounts it was magical. The best part? Zep had the good sense to walk away after the gig. No tour, no new album. The buzz lasted well into 2008 with rumors that Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones might tour without Plant. Really? Zeppelin without Plant? REALLY!??!

AC/DC
They may have sold their soul to Wal-Mart, but Angus still looks good in that school boy outfit (he lost the backpack, though). These guys can play those three chords until death do us part. They're my favorite guilty pleasure, and I’m glad to see 'em back.

GLEN CAMPBELL
"Glen Campbell came back?" you ask. "Who the hell is Glen Campbell?" My friends, Glen Campbell is the man behind "Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Wichita Lineman" (OK, he didn't write them, but he recorded the only versions that matter) and one of the scariest mug shots in recent memory. It rivals that Nick Nolte one. Glen didn't tour arenas or make a big-budget video, but at age 73, he made one of the best albums of the year, covering Green Day, Travis, and Tom Petty, among others.

DONNA SUMMER
The disco queen returned with her first album of new material in 17 years. Admittedly, Crayons was not a return to the heights of her heady Casablanca recording days. Still, her voice is undeniable and her dignity is disarming. She's aged with class and style.

ABBA
This one ranks up there with the Zep reunion as the best way of coming back without coming back. Sweden's most popular export (besides Volvos and same-sex marriage) watched their stock rise without ever getting on a stage or doing an interview. The ABBA-inspired film Mamma Mia brought them back into the center of pop culture 27 years after their last recording session.

NOT-SO-WELCOMED COMEBACKS

SMASHING PUMPKINS
In my book, there are no comebacks when half the band isn't onstage. Call it Smashing Pumpkins, call it Zwan, call it the FutureEmbrace — it's all Billy Corgan, and he never goes away.

EAGLES
Another Wal-Mart exclusive. Unlike AC/DC, the Eagles just feel more shameless and bland every time they come around again.

GUNS N' ROSES
Maybe China wants Axl. I can't find anyone here who cares.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Apparently, there are legions of NKOTB fans who are so happy to have the boys back. I’m glad they don't live in my neighborhood. "Hey, you NKOTB fans, get off my lawn."

MOTLEY CRUE
I wanted to love this. I wanted to be psyched. It's the Crüe: how can you not love them, right? Wrong. They had one publicist too many, one stylist too many, one photo op too many. It was COMEBACK in all caps. It was too much of a hard sell that crossed the line when I turned on CNN and saw Nick Mars hand Larry King his guitar during a rehearsal. Come to think of it, Larry King in the Crüe isn't such a bad idea. Larry gets the ladies.

Well, IMO the Eagles are a fine band. Not for everyone...

And...the Smashing Pumpkins are an awesome band. Sure, not the best comeback, and sure, stupid fans protest on not hearing their favorite hit songs on concert, but you have to admit...98% of thier songs are good.

As for NKOTB...yeah. They suck. And their "new album" really does sound like any one in the pop charts coulda done it. + the lyrics this time around are so silly for their age.

You still suck!

3. DUDE -
ABBA?....A welcome comeback?...Somebody needs to lay off the eggnog.

4. Donald -
After what a few million dollars and something like fifteen years does anyone still give a rat's ass abot Axl Rose and what passes for Guns and Roses these days.

The New Kids on the Block reunion was a VERY welcomed comeback for their fans. The people who don't like them now are probably the same naysayers they had the first time around, purely jealous that's all.

6. Jennifer L -
hehehehe, I actually agree with most of the list, but really man, ABBA?????? I assumed you had better taste, though I suppose taste is subjective...which is a nice way to say...on that count...it's bad... :D

Some of you writing these blogs must be in your 20,s. you know nothing of music, you think britney has talent, and you know nothing of these ledgendary bands that you attempt to speak of. You do not know what a comeback is! AC/DC , Neil Diamond, The police, Tina Turner, are not comebacks, their careers Never tanked! The Police celebrated their thirtieth anniversary. They have never been forgotten, and they are still very much in demand!! They called it quits while at the top of their career! Neil diamond is very active and tours practically every year and still fills arenas! his music sells!! He never went away! Never forgotten! Tina turner nearly 70 years old and as proven, NOT EVEN BEYONCE CAN KEEP UP WITH HER ONSTAGE!! Still very much in demand!! AC/DC never called it Quits and have been in demand!! Their music still sells!! NOT FORGOTTEN!!! Their careers never derailed or hit rock bottom at the time they took time off. that is nothing new!! Newer bands can not take time off between albums because they are quickly FORGOTTEN, that says something about the music of today!! Turner, The Police Etc. Thier back catolog along with thier music sell big. Their music is timeless especially compared to what ever comes out on modern radio and "EMTY VEE"! The Eagles and Motley Crue are proven amoung the MOST WELCOME COMEBACKS even though theirs came years ago and Tina turners in the early 80's. Britney Spears and your Ashley Simpsons Etc. will never experience anything like this for themselves in the same way or on the same level. Their so called comebacks are more over "HYPE" and never do as well as thier people are leading on, Britneys album was quickly knocked out of the #1 spot ont the charts.(rumor has it the album didn't even sell close to 5,000 copies) Original artist such as the Police, AC/DC Etc. have the talent and the real background stories/struggles, and never had to "create such Transparent Publicity stunts such as Spears does in order to keep public interested!

These bands make deals with walmart or best buy simply because they are given better promotion, where at other places the retailer would rather promote the bands or so called "artists" who pretty much do not matter in the music world! such geniuses as britney spears.

Of course AC/DC is a welcomed comeback. And as for Smashing Pumpkins.... they have some pretty good songs, but I'm not a huge fan. Don't worry too much about them though. Apparently since they didn't have high enough cd sales or sell out enough shows or something, they aren't going to make anymore records. At least, that's what I heard. Geez, can you say lame? Music shouldn't be about all that.

10. :D -
Well for one thing, I think Axl pretty much knew he was gonna be criticized no matter what he did. He has talent, and his new ablum is way more mellow, as it should be.

Hmm, I wonder if AC/DC will ever release their album to another retail store? Wal-Mart is making everyone else go outta business. =/

11. Amy -
alot of these people should of stayed retird because i think that there tooooooo old to keep up what is the point of comming back to make one album and the no more, there is no point

12. ness -
how da hell ur gonna say Guns-&-Roses r not welcome...have u ever palyed Grnad Theft Auto... WElcome to the Jungle is a good song....lmao

I just stumbled across this website. I must say, although some of the remarks are pretty harsh on the entertainers or so-called entertainers, it's refreshing to see that some people aren't afraid to voice their opinions. I personally have some credibility in the music industry -- my husband and I used to give concerts back in the day, so I know what's entailed. In fact, we've shared the stage with some entertainers who are still on the charts today, but we got busy doing other stuff and didn't push as hard for the fame. I do hear some tunes on the radio that make me think ANYONE could make a record in somebody's basement. Sometimes I wonder who they convinced or paid to let them get on the music charts. I try not to be so critical when I see some real effort that has gone into a recording, but when known artists start taking people for granted or when they feel so comfortable that they know the fans are going to love whatever they put out (whatever they sing about and however they sing it or not sing it), I get pretty disturbed. I do believe we need more people speaking out instead of just being so middle of the road. I also believe there are those singers who simply try too hard to keep up with their competition. When you've got the real deal, there's nothing to prove. It is what it is: "solid gold" or "I gotta keep this money comin in."

Dont think da way u came up with ur grouping is scientific. I see a bunch of favouritism, herry pick, and 'r' words

Oh, nice lyrics, it is awesome. i do love it as it bit my heart, i am just wondering how can add it to my own space of interracialsingleonline.com ,where i collect all the nice voices in the world. can u help me to add the same one there?

Okay, finally a list where you can agree on. I mean The Eagles are old history and we shouldn't mess with. Abba made a wondeful comeback in Mamma Mia which I thought was pretty good, it pleases many people and than AC/DC brought so many applauses and cheers!

19. Yahoo! Music User -
You got that right...legions of fans..thousands of them and dedicated to NKOTB forever!!

20. P -
NKOTB are welcomed!
Not a brilliant album, but it's funny... it entertains. I loved their come back! And I (and as you say, many, many others) hope they stay around for quite a long time.
I enjoy this stuff!! Just fun... good!
