Rick Springfield, at 58, Is Back on the Charts and He Looks Better Than All of Us

Take the poll.

After decades on the fringes — or maybe just the summer county fair circuit — Rick Springfield, now 58, just landed his 17th CD, Venus In Overdrive, at #28 on the Billboard charts for his highest debut in 20 years. This was shocking for a number of reasons: 1) 17th CD? Really? 2) Apparently Springfield has sold close to 20 million CDs. Again, really? 3) 58? Wow, he looks good — maybe even better than contemporaries Sting and David Bowie.

All of which brings me back to the ear-piercing squeals and radio contest winner photo-op line at my one and only Rick Springfield concert circa 1982 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As you can see from the photo, my friend David and I were wearing our '80s finest quasi-military gear for the occasion, outdone only by our new best mate, who went full metal jacket with his green paratrooper jumpsuit, frosted-tip new wave mullet, and spanking white Reebok high tops. (Remember those?) My friend's older brother had actually won the tickets, but felt "above" Springfield's particular brand of pop. So, we were dropped off by David's mom and hustled backstage to wait in line for our way awkward grin and grip with the soap-opera singer-turned pop star.

My first brush with fame may have been better if I were a tweenage girl, because I was pretty sure after seeing the show that it would be the last I'd hear of Mr. Springfield. That is until I recently heard my four-year-old daughter singing at the top of her lungs in the other room, "I wish I was Jessie's gurllllllll!" over and over and over again. She went on like this for about 10 minutes until I finally asked, "Where did you hear that?" She smiled, blamed her school pal, and said, "Lilly's car. She loves that song! It's awesome."

Awesome. Exactly.
OK, so he's got a certain look.

I can only imagine the new generation of young girls and soccer moms (and their moms) everywhere so enthralled with the AARP-eligible rocker that they rushed out to buy the album. That might partially explain the chart love — that and the fact that last year he returned to the scene of his first brush with fame, TV's General Hospital, where the Australian native put the Dr. Noah Drake scrubs on again. And, in an only-in-the-soaps twist, he simultaneously suited up as an Aussie-accented alter ego, rocker Eli Love. It probably didn't hurt that he performed his new single, "What's Victoria's Secret?" in character on the show the week before the album's chart debut. Or that it basically rips off the "Jessie" riff and, mark my words, will eventually end up in ads for the lingerie company, unless they sue him first. Actually, if you look around, it's kind of like Ricky Boy never really left us.

Rick Springfield as Eli Love

Rolling Stone just voted "Jessie's Girl" the #1 karaoke song of all time. Rockers Everclear and country act Rascal Flatts have covered it during their live shows; it was featured in the Jennifer Garner flick 13 Going On 30, though not to be outdone by its place in Paul Thomas Andersons' Boogie Nights with the ultra creepy Alfred Molina scatting along to it during a drug deal gone about to go horribly wrong as his "Awesome Mix Tape #6" unspools in the background.

Here's where it all began.

for those of us who love Rick, he's never gone away. I get to every show in my area and I FINALLY got to meet him at the airport where I work. I was 14 all over again!

22. Gem -
Wow, he looks HOT then and NOW! He's yummy! His music sounds sooo good too...glad to hear him again! :-)

Hi Gil,

I've heard this story from you before but with more unsavory details about Mr. Springfield's state at the time.

Take care

OMG!! I feel just like my teenage daughter with the Jonas Brothers - except I can say that Rick looks hotter now than he ever has. WOW!! I'm totally impressed and insprired that being older can be sexy. When I saw pictures of him as a little girl in the early mid 70s I had no idea that I would have the biggest crush on him in the 80s. NEVER would I think I still have a crush on him in 2008!!

25. HANNELORE -
My daughter and I saw him in concert last year and he was fantastic! He was also my first concert in 82 and I think that he has not changed very much (still a hunk). I look forward to more concerts and music.

This man still looks as good as he did in the 80's (if not better!!)...OMG!!! He's still got that rocking ability & still melts my heart!! Happy Birthday early Rick!!! So glad you are back making music & on General Hospital as the gorgeous Dr. Noah Drake!!!!

30. Chrissy -
It's a good album! I introduced my kids to Rick a decade ago with the Greatest Hits CD. He sang the soundtrack of my life for a few years back in the '80s!

31. LisaL -
I saw him in San Diego last year - he brought the rock. :)
I went purely to see the windmill with the roses. It didn't disappoint. The next night I saw Hall & Oates (also good, but not as good as Rick).
He covered "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy. And he spent almost as much time in the audience as he did on stage. Great show.

Rick looks great for his age because he obviously has lived a cleaner (read: drug-free) life than his contemporaries like Sting or David Bowie or other big stars when they were 58. I still love Rick even after more than 25 years. Rick, I'm still waiting for you. :-)

Bowie doesn't get surgery or botox. I'm not dissing Ricky, but come on Bowie owns everyone in the music industry, both in music and in just how plain awesome he is.

34. DON-T -
It's great and everything.........but don't you think that he could have changed up the background beat from Jessie's Girl from the video on top from General Hospital? I guess he's going with the idea that it worked once.....why not again a couple decades later........or at the very least don't post the Jessie's Girl video right under it.

Was that the concert at the ATP Tennis Stadium next to Kings Island with The Greg Kihn Band? I was at that show with my girlfriend's mom. Good thing I was rockin the parachute pants because I'm pretty sure that goes down as a loser moment.

36. SuzanB -
Well I don't have to worry about who I'll fantasize about tonight.

37. Joanna -
Loved him then. Love him now. He's a great family man, awesome singer. Extremely easy on the eyes. I watch GH also, and he's still got it all. Isn't that right Dr. Noah Drake?

38. Kelli -
I'm so glad he's back

39. Matt -
Rick looks TERRIFIC and sounds EXCELLENT!! His new album is one of my favorites to listen to now!! AWESOME job, Rick! :-)
