Rick Springfield, at 58, Is Back on the Charts and He Looks Better Than All of Us

Take the poll.

After decades on the fringes — or maybe just the summer county fair circuit — Rick Springfield, now 58, just landed his 17th CD, Venus In Overdrive, at #28 on the Billboard charts for his highest debut in 20 years. This was shocking for a number of reasons: 1) 17th CD? Really? 2) Apparently Springfield has sold close to 20 million CDs. Again, really? 3) 58? Wow, he looks good — maybe even better than contemporaries Sting and David Bowie.

All of which brings me back to the ear-piercing squeals and radio contest winner photo-op line at my one and only Rick Springfield concert circa 1982 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As you can see from the photo, my friend David and I were wearing our '80s finest quasi-military gear for the occasion, outdone only by our new best mate, who went full metal jacket with his green paratrooper jumpsuit, frosted-tip new wave mullet, and spanking white Reebok high tops. (Remember those?) My friend's older brother had actually won the tickets, but felt "above" Springfield's particular brand of pop. So, we were dropped off by David's mom and hustled backstage to wait in line for our way awkward grin and grip with the soap-opera singer-turned pop star.

My first brush with fame may have been better if I were a tweenage girl, because I was pretty sure after seeing the show that it would be the last I'd hear of Mr. Springfield. That is until I recently heard my four-year-old daughter singing at the top of her lungs in the other room, "I wish I was Jessie's gurllllllll!" over and over and over again. She went on like this for about 10 minutes until I finally asked, "Where did you hear that?" She smiled, blamed her school pal, and said, "Lilly's car. She loves that song! It's awesome."

Awesome. Exactly.
OK, so he's got a certain look.

I can only imagine the new generation of young girls and soccer moms (and their moms) everywhere so enthralled with the AARP-eligible rocker that they rushed out to buy the album. That might partially explain the chart love — that and the fact that last year he returned to the scene of his first brush with fame, TV's General Hospital, where the Australian native put the Dr. Noah Drake scrubs on again. And, in an only-in-the-soaps twist, he simultaneously suited up as an Aussie-accented alter ego, rocker Eli Love. It probably didn't hurt that he performed his new single, "What's Victoria's Secret?" in character on the show the week before the album's chart debut. Or that it basically rips off the "Jessie" riff and, mark my words, will eventually end up in ads for the lingerie company, unless they sue him first. Actually, if you look around, it's kind of like Ricky Boy never really left us.

Rick Springfield as Eli Love

Rolling Stone just voted "Jessie's Girl" the #1 karaoke song of all time. Rockers Everclear and country act Rascal Flatts have covered it during their live shows; it was featured in the Jennifer Garner flick 13 Going On 30, though not to be outdone by its place in Paul Thomas Andersons' Boogie Nights with the ultra creepy Alfred Molina scatting along to it during a drug deal gone about to go horribly wrong as his "Awesome Mix Tape #6" unspools in the background.

Here's where it all began.

Oh, WOW! Life is good! He's back. What's the title of that ancient song about 'everybody's talking on computers'? or something like that?, does anyone know?, I'm not sure just how it goes but now it makes a lot more sense than it did back then in the early 80's. ha-ha. I still love his 'human touch' song. I truly love anything he does. Do all you haters notice how positive 99%+ of the comments are?

hes not a hit...nobody outside the USA has ever heard of him...its too Trans AM or Camero jeans with long hair and no money kind of following...oh ya i forgot they drink beer too ...never a nice wine or a Single Malt whiskey

He does still look great. It's a shame most of his listeners probably don't or on their way to don't. I'm one with gray hair now, it's funny to see he hasn't aged, but he's the same age as my mother!

His best album was his last one in 2005. I loved every song, but my favorite was Soul to Soul. I listened to every song 100 times I'll bet. I liked the rocker sound more than the pop rock. He's definitely gotten better, and he was already good.

I can't wait to get the new ablum. He was just in Tennessee this past few months and I heard good reviews all over Tennessee.

Good to see him back!

That brings back lots of memory...I had a crush on him when I was in my teens. Well, he still looks good, and the voice has not chnaged at all. Rock on, Rick (Eternal) Springfield...

I saw Rick in 1983 at Radio City Music hall- my 1st concert as an adult. I was hooked and have been since! His later stuff is the best but never got out of the shadow of working class dog and Sucess hasnt spoiled me yet. I have had the honor to meet him a few times since then and he is a sweet guy who LOVES his fans. There is a cruise for his fans in November which I will be on. Venus in Overdrive is an awesome cd that I recommend to everyone!

Wow! I feel like I am stuck in a time warp. He hasn't changed a bit! Guess that's what a "clean living" looks like. Way to go, Rick!

Stephanie, they didn't mean better singer I hope you know... better LOOKING at the same age than Bowie, which Rick is better looking and in person...I was on the plane coming back from LA and he, his wife and band were on my plane and he looks the same in person as he looks in photos and a really nice guy, he loves his fans cause we've all been there through the journey. Been a fan since he utter the works "Speak to the Sky". Besides his new album Venus in Overdrive yes there are many other great CD's...but the other one right up there with Venus in Overdrive is Shock, Denial, Anger, Acceptance.

He's one of the most under rated song writers, guitar players and singers. And many don't even realize he's originally from Australia. Well time to discover one of the best....................Rick Springfield!!!

What am I missing? In the song, he says "Tell me her name" and "Though I really need to know her name." But the title is "What's Victoria's Secret?" Isn't that a bit like like saying "What color was George Washington's white horse"?!?

My first concert was Rick Springfield, 1980. Actually, so was my second concert (after that, I turned to Ozzy, Yngwie, and Motley Crue). As I remember it, Rick was fantastic (My sisters even had his first ever single "Speak to the Sky" from the 70s). He was hot, he was entertaining and he showed off his talent. I remember screaming for the entire show and losing my voice.

I am so thrilled to see Rick is still in the business and still rocking with new material. The guy still sounds great and hell, at 58, he looks AMAZING. Wow! And I hear he's still as great in concert as he was 28 years ago when I first saw. My sister went to his show about 2 or 3 years ago and she LOVED it. Way to go, Rick!!
