Rick Springfield, at 58, Is Back on the Charts and He Looks Better Than All of Us

Take the poll.

After decades on the fringes — or maybe just the summer county fair circuit — Rick Springfield, now 58, just landed his 17th CD, Venus In Overdrive, at #28 on the Billboard charts for his highest debut in 20 years. This was shocking for a number of reasons: 1) 17th CD? Really? 2) Apparently Springfield has sold close to 20 million CDs. Again, really? 3) 58? Wow, he looks good — maybe even better than contemporaries Sting and David Bowie.

All of which brings me back to the ear-piercing squeals and radio contest winner photo-op line at my one and only Rick Springfield concert circa 1982 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As you can see from the photo, my friend David and I were wearing our '80s finest quasi-military gear for the occasion, outdone only by our new best mate, who went full metal jacket with his green paratrooper jumpsuit, frosted-tip new wave mullet, and spanking white Reebok high tops. (Remember those?) My friend's older brother had actually won the tickets, but felt "above" Springfield's particular brand of pop. So, we were dropped off by David's mom and hustled backstage to wait in line for our way awkward grin and grip with the soap-opera singer-turned pop star.

My first brush with fame may have been better if I were a tweenage girl, because I was pretty sure after seeing the show that it would be the last I'd hear of Mr. Springfield. That is until I recently heard my four-year-old daughter singing at the top of her lungs in the other room, "I wish I was Jessie's gurllllllll!" over and over and over again. She went on like this for about 10 minutes until I finally asked, "Where did you hear that?" She smiled, blamed her school pal, and said, "Lilly's car. She loves that song! It's awesome."

Awesome. Exactly.
OK, so he's got a certain look.

I can only imagine the new generation of young girls and soccer moms (and their moms) everywhere so enthralled with the AARP-eligible rocker that they rushed out to buy the album. That might partially explain the chart love — that and the fact that last year he returned to the scene of his first brush with fame, TV's General Hospital, where the Australian native put the Dr. Noah Drake scrubs on again. And, in an only-in-the-soaps twist, he simultaneously suited up as an Aussie-accented alter ego, rocker Eli Love. It probably didn't hurt that he performed his new single, "What's Victoria's Secret?" in character on the show the week before the album's chart debut. Or that it basically rips off the "Jessie" riff and, mark my words, will eventually end up in ads for the lingerie company, unless they sue him first. Actually, if you look around, it's kind of like Ricky Boy never really left us.

Rick Springfield as Eli Love

Rolling Stone just voted "Jessie's Girl" the #1 karaoke song of all time. Rockers Everclear and country act Rascal Flatts have covered it during their live shows; it was featured in the Jennifer Garner flick 13 Going On 30, though not to be outdone by its place in Paul Thomas Andersons' Boogie Nights with the ultra creepy Alfred Molina scatting along to it during a drug deal gone about to go horribly wrong as his "Awesome Mix Tape #6" unspools in the background.

Here's where it all began.

I saw him perform live back in the mid-80's (free tickets through my job w/ Ticketmaster.) The show, to my surprise, we quite good and he sounded great.

Saw him in Vegas in 2002 in the FX show - he was awesome! I've had a thing for this guy since he was Dr. Noah Drake - and he still looks great! He looks better in leather pants at 58 than most guys do at 28!

love rick in general hospital and of course at concerts too!!!

I got to see him in Peachtree City and meet him. He still looks great up close and sounds amazing. His new album is great also and many of the songs can give the current chart toppers a run for their money.

Actually, this would be his second come-back and third brush w/ fame. I was 10 years old in 1972 when I first saw Rick Springfield in the pages of Tiger Beat Magazine promoting "Speak to the Sky"! He also appeared on American Bandstand and The Sonny and Cher show. He was just as hot then as he is now! He also wore those white pants that so typical of the era...you know, the Bob Mackie-inspired pants!?! Sigh!

I have loved this man for years! I saw him in concert this past July(makes the 6th time) and he was AMAZING! This is the only man this lesbian would cream over if I just meet him! Rock on Rick!

Been to a couple of his concerts. I'm not impressed enough to become the groupie I was at 12. I do love it though when he performs his older songs. And he should not be on GH. I dont think it does him any justice.

Rick is a totally wonderful musician and a hottie, might I add! He's got a lot of material and "Venus in Overdrive" definitely shows that. This album will capture both new and current fans of Rick. Rick is FANTASTIC!!

This man will be 59 on Saturday, he is a legend in my eyes. His music inspires me. I have met him in person and try to see him in concert every chance I get. I wish I could go on the cruise in Nov, but I just can't. We will have a birthday cake and honor Rick this Saturday it is not everyday that a 59 year old has what this guy has.

I think Rick is great. I saw him in concert when I was in 7th grade(85) I have loved his music ever since. I use to play his records over and over. I even dated a guy who resembled him. I love Rick's voice, no one sounds like him.

People, please. Rick's career DID NOT BEGIN with "Jessie's Girl". True,it exploded with said song, but his first albums were in 1972 and 1973 (Capitol Records and Columbia Records, respectively),and his first hit was "Speak To The Sky" from the "Beginnings" album (Capitol 1972 - also his first solo single).

176. trekman -
I have Ricks Newest CD "Venus In Overdrive". It freakin Rocks! Its a great CD. His best in years! I hope this is a comeback for Rick!

177. pwsgirl -
I have been a Rick fan since the age of 14--almost 30 years ago--and still love him as much today as I did the first time I heard "Jessie's Girl." My office sports a great lithograph of Rick "then" and "now", I have all his CD's, videos, and have been to countless concerts. He's one of the true rockers who deserves to keep going and going and going....
