Forget 2008. Remember '68, '78, '88, and '98?
This was a year of big news and big scandal in music. The Boss finally picked a winner after getting burned backing Kerry in '04. Britney proved that anyone can come back, and Clay Aiken proved that everyone's gaydar works properly.
As we all look back on the past 12 months and shed a tear for auld lang syne, I’d like to get back even further. I want to remind you of the biggest music stories over the past four decades. These are the things that were gripping our fascination in '68, '78, '88, and '98. Oh, how times have changed.
1968
JAMES BROWN SAVES BOSTON
On the evening of Martin Luther King's assassination, the Godfather of Soul took the stage in Boston. The city was on the verge of a full-scale riot like many other major U.S. cities. The concert was televised into locals' homes, keeping folks off the street and Boston calm. See, music DOES save lives.
1978
SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER RULES!
The Bee Gees soundtrack for the John Travolta film became an instant pop culture phenomenon, ushering in the age of disco and endless parodies. The one major omission from the soundtrack? "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees. It was played in the movie but omitted from album.
1988
ELO BEAMS UP
They made their last album two years earlier and had been inactive since, still Jeff Lynne officially announced the end of Electric Light Orchestra in '88. And the world quietly wept. By this time Lynne was producing George Harrison albums and was one of the Traveling Wilburys.
1998
GEORGE MICHAEL CAN'T HOLD IT
The former Wham! singer began a second career as a public restroom aficionado. He was busted in Beverly Hills for "lewd contact.” It gives his single "Father Figure" a whole new meaning.
