Ever Get The Feeling You've Been Cheated? I Want My Money Back From These Concerts

Posted Wed Aug 27, 2008 1:31pm PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

After the Sex Pistols’ last gig in San Francisco, Johnny Rotten famously chided his audience, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" In a series of notorious bad gigs, the Pistols delivered one of their worst.

It's an unfortunate rock tradition: great bands giving really bad concerts. Neil Diamond is the latest, having decided to refund money to fans who attended his show in Columbus, Ohio. Seems ol' Neil had laryngitis and thought he'd sing his way through a concert anyway. Of course. Why would a singer need a voice to sing? But I gotta give him props for having the integrity to give fans their money back. Most artists take the money and run.

I think all concerts should have a money-back guarantee. Given that the average ticket price is over 60 bucks these days, we should have some protection. I'm starting with these concerts — I want my money back for these live flops. They wasted my money and my time. Both are in short supply.

U2 - PopMart Tour

If you read my U2 post, you know I’m a fan. However, four Irish dudes stuck inside a giant lemon dressed up like the Village People is not my idea of a good time. I know, it was supposed to be a "rock spectacular" full of smart irony but still... give me U2 on a stage without a lemon or McDonalds arches. Refund, please!

VAN HALEN - Greensboro, 2007

Gimme my money back — and someone fire the soundman! David, Eddie, and the boys launched into "Jump," but the backing keyboard track was playing in the one key, while Eddie was playing in another. The whole thing is a train wreck beyond compare. Note to bands: it's okay to just stop the song, fix the problem, and start over.

BOB DYLAN - The "Never-Ending Tour"

Bob's "never-ending tour" needs to end. He's taken to playing nearly incomprehensible versions of his songs while perched behind an electric piano wearing a cowboy hat. He's like some folkie Yosemite Sam piano-bar singer impersonating Bob Dylan.

MADONNA - Any and Every Concert

I know I only have myself to blame but I want my money back for every Madonna tour. When will she learn that multiple costume changes, an overly exercised body, a chorus line of dancers, and some platitudes about peace and love does not make up for soul. Soul is at the center of a concert. Anything else is just a Vegas show.

THE POLICE - 2008 Reunion Tour

What was great about the Police in the '80s? They were three dudes playing tight rock tunes. Reunited in 2008, Sting insisted on turning them into some prog-rock version of the Police with rambling excursions.

*BAD CONCERT HALL OF FAME*
I wasn't at these concerts but they deserve a place in bad rock concert history.

GUNS 'N ROSES - Riverport Amphitheatre, 1991

It's the stuff of rock legend. Axl Rose jumps off stage, attacks a fan recording the show, and is pulled off him by securtity guards. He gets back on stage and says, "Well, thanks to the lame-ass security, I'm going home" then storms off the stage. A riot ensued, injuring dozens. I wasn't there, but if I were, I would want my money back.

ROLLING STONES - Altamont, 1969

Note to self: never hire the Hells Angels for concert security.

"FINAL" CONCERTS

And finally, any band that makes some huge deal about their "final" tour, asks their fans to shell out hundreds of dollars for the privilege, then reunites soon after should give everyone their money back. If it's the last time, make it the last time.

May all your concerts be worth the money you shell out. I raise my lighter to you.

Ok in response to the "awful" Tori concert, I have seen her 4 times, with band and without band, and she is spectacular. She is a great singer and pianist and I have never been disappointed.

You couldn't be more off on the Police concert. It was amazing, and that was from the second balcony in Wrigley Field. Tight? They were amazing tight, perfection, and they didn't try and kill each other on stage. You are clueless.

BOB DYLAN IS COOLER THAN YOU AND WILL ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!!!!! SO SHUT UP ABOUT HIS CONCERTS CAUSE THEY ROCK!!!!!!!!!

104. MikeM -

You are on some kind of drugs if you thought the Police reunion was bad. That was a GREAT concert and a great way to send off the Police!

You should be fired. Why Yahoo pays you for you wrong opinions is beyond me and most people who are commenting on this.

The Police were great in 07 and 08 - I went to the indoor and outdoor concert in Philly. What the hell were you smoking? They sounded as good if not better than they did back in the day. And Sting still looks hot!

Going to a Madonna concert is like going to a Cirque Du Soleil show. It's always over the top, colorful, unique, and strangly sexual. You either hate it or love it. I would love to see her in concert one day. But as much as i respect peoples point on life and etc, i think she should save that religious stuff during her show for her private life.

I know countless people who have claimed over the years to have been at the GnR concert at Riverport in '91 and I also know a handfull who were actually there. My cousin was one of the "injured" and received $40,000 as a settlement.

In regards to the Van Halen concert....Shawn, it wasn't the soundman that had the problem. It was Eddie!!!

I saw Neil Diamond last week in NYC - and he was GREAT!

It's crazy to put U2 in a catagory with these burn-outs. Popmart was great, and they're still the best band in the world. It's hard to compare them to Eddie Van Halen playing in the wrong key because he's drunk. If there were keyboard issues, they should have hired a keyboard player. I saw Van Halen in 04' in Las Vegas with Sammy, and Eddie was not in top form then either. Let's pray he gets over his drinking problem, because he's one of the best guitarists ever.

sorry man... I saw the PopMart tour, and while not their best, it wasn't as bad as some concerts I've been too.

An hour long Stabbing Westward concert comes to mind.

hhhhhhh

I was kind of expecting to see the Doors Miami 1969 show here, suprised it wasn't mentioned.

I couldn't agree more about Madonna. She's never been good! I don't care what her fans say.

Add Lynyrd Skynyrd in Lima, Ohio to that list. I saw them last weekend at the county fair. Yeah, county fair good idea to see a rock group there. Anyway, the sound was horrible and after some walking off and a 5 minute wait they came back on and did "Freebird". Should've made that "free concert" instead. I want my $76 back please!

Bad concerts, two words for you Pearl Jam. The two concerts I attended ( over a year apart) ended up with Eddie going to the hospital after a few lackluster songs. Pathetic.

like to see berlin back in concert

The Police show was incredibly tight and more jazz influenced than prog rock.
Considering all the heavy weight jazz cats they have been playing with it stands to reason that the influence of cats like Stanley Clarke and Branford Marsalis, to name a few, would be the likely progression that their music has taken. Before they were great, yet out of control musically. Now they have allowed their music to breathe and have a real feel to it. I will note that this opinion is that of a complete jazz fusion freak.

I was disappointed in Shania Twain a few years ago. I had taken my then 7 year old daughter because we used to dance around the house singing her songs. She sang in the round and spent 80% of the songs holding the mike in one hand singing while kneeling down using the other hand to sign autographs to those on the first level, most who rushed the stage after she signed for one little girl. I get that she was trying to be nice or not seem rude to others who asked, but those of us in the upper levels rarely ever saw her because she was lost in the crowds bent on one knee - we could only hear her sing as she signed. I still love her music, but a much anticipated concert was a huge disappointment. I think anyone who didn't get an autograph deserves their money back.

AP
Tue Dec 29, 2009 6:45am PST

AP - Lil Wayne emerged as a top-selling musician known for his clever wordplay and risque lyrics, but like rappers before him, he's staring down a year behind bars at the peak of his career. The artist returned to his … More »
