My Birthday Gift to Miley Cyrus: Lessons on How to ROCK

Posted Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Miley Cyrus is on top of the world. She's celebrating her 16th birthday at Disneyland, she's got a(nother) hit album, and every girl wants to be her. Only one problem. SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO ROCK. Miley Cyrus represents everything that's wrong with current pop music. It's fabricated, phoned-in, self conscious, soulless, board room created product. It's style over substance and has no ability to generate feelings other than the urge to buy a matching Miley Cyrus lunchbox.

On Miley's new album she covers Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Instead of taking a cue from Cyndi's '80s thrift shop soul, Miley turns the song into a hopped up, cut-and-paste exercise. Not one bent note. Not one hiccup. Not one strip of pink in the hair. The girl doesn't swing.

Miley could learn a thing or two from the great '80s rock chicks; artists who weren't tied to a teleprompter or afraid to let their mascara run. Miley needs a serious primer. So here are some singers I hope Miley has in her iPod while she's standing in line for Space Mountain. Consider it an early birthday gift. No thank you card is necessary.

CHRISSIE HYNDE

The grande dame of '80s rock chicks. She was sultry and cool. Plus, she written some of the best rock songs EVER! Chrissie Hynde is the blueprint for any teenage pop star wannabe looking to have some real cred.

PAT BENATAR

Probably the best singer of the bunch, Pat Benatar brought barroom grit to the big stage. Say what you will about her questionable fashion choices, Pat was purely authentic. No focus groups were polled in the making of her records.

TINA TURNER

Okay, a litle unfair since she started her career in the 1960s but Tina Turner's biggest success came in the '80s with her Private Dancer album. She's everything a female pop star should be: sexy, soulful and spontaneous.

CYNDI LAUPER

Her makeup, hair and general quirkiness overshadow the fact that Cyndi Lauper was one the most soulful chicks to come out of the '80. She could hang with Aretha Franklin and sing Marvin Gaye tunes (check her cover of "What's Going On"). Let's see Miley attempt that.

THE BANGLES

The Bangles are proof that short skirts and electric guitars go hand-in-hand. They are one of the great all-girl groups, backing up their looks with a serious pop-rock pedigree. Plus they had harmonies and guitar jangle for days.

Miley Cyrus really needs to break away from the "Micky Mouse Club" scene. To me it seems she is not in it for the art but for the glam. If she really wants to prove the world wrong how about break away from Disney label and Daddy's check book and learn what its like to create, perform, and promote music that's from the heart. She could learn a thing or two from bands such as the one I'm in or even take a look at your brother Miley! as much as i hate to say it he has done pretty well for him self in Metro Station. And stop holding onto that grudge with Katy Perry and doing backing vocals for her, she has done more for her self then you ever could. So you're sixteen now happy birthday, now show the world what you can really do!

MILEY CYRUS IS A FABRICATED BUBBLE GUM STAR, WITH NO STAYING POWER,,IF IT WEREN'T FOR HER DAD'S CONNECTIONS , SHE WOULD BE UNKNOWN,,,THANK GOD IT WILL PASS...SAVE YOUR MONEY KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!

ya shes said before that she wants a more mature scene, if thats what she wants then she needs to go for it and leave disney, hopefully she wont turn out too be a dud after leaving disney like other artists have...

hopefully miley wont follow spears on the road to ruin after she starts spreading the cooder around and being grown up. only time will tell, but the split from super clean and not so clean will be coming up fast. hold on, cause we are in for another ride, tween+ money+ fame + puberty = wild ride coming up

7. Clam Happy -
How incredibly insulting to mention that pop twit with the likes of Chrissie Hynde and Tina Turner. Why not compare Sanjaya to Jim Morrison?

Art? Of course she's not in it for the art. She's the kid of a one-hit-wonder, who is lucky enough to be cute and carry a tune. She was molded and formed by the people at Disney, and the girl just loves the limelight. There's not an ounce of artist in her....she's a confection...a creation, not an artist.

Would Lita Ford be a stretch?

You are all idiots! She's SIXTEEN!!! She should be all bubblegum and stuff. When she's 18 or 22 let's revisit this. Until then..let her be!

I don't have kids and don't listen to Cyrus, but I have to ask what's going on with sexy and short skirts talk? She's a sixteen year old kid and her listeners aren't far behind. It's corporate bubble gum garbage, but I'm 30 and still remember the corny stuff around when I was younger. If she's got the chops, her music style will adapt and if not she be gone like the others...except absolutely rich.

Miley totally doesn't rock. She has no spirit, no soul. She is reading tele-prompters and counting dance steps. I've never seen such flat, lifeless performance in my life. She is the very worst of bubble gum and her passing fame is on the decline.

First of all, Katy Perry did back up vocals for Miley. Daddy's checkbook was never as big as Miley's. Have we forgotten that Miley is 16 years old? I actually enjoy her recent album, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun aside...my nieces like it. I agree that she needs to be a little more rock and roll, but she also needs to be a little more humble and gracious for the fame she has received.
