My Birthday Gift to Miley Cyrus: Lessons on How to ROCK

Posted Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Miley Cyrus is on top of the world. She's celebrating her 16th birthday at Disneyland, she's got a(nother) hit album, and every girl wants to be her. Only one problem. SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO ROCK. Miley Cyrus represents everything that's wrong with current pop music. It's fabricated, phoned-in, self conscious, soulless, board room created product. It's style over substance and has no ability to generate feelings other than the urge to buy a matching Miley Cyrus lunchbox.

On Miley's new album she covers Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Instead of taking a cue from Cyndi's '80s thrift shop soul, Miley turns the song into a hopped up, cut-and-paste exercise. Not one bent note. Not one hiccup. Not one strip of pink in the hair. The girl doesn't swing.

Miley could learn a thing or two from the great '80s rock chicks; artists who weren't tied to a teleprompter or afraid to let their mascara run. Miley needs a serious primer. So here are some singers I hope Miley has in her iPod while she's standing in line for Space Mountain. Consider it an early birthday gift. No thank you card is necessary.

CHRISSIE HYNDE

The grande dame of '80s rock chicks. She was sultry and cool. Plus, she written some of the best rock songs EVER! Chrissie Hynde is the blueprint for any teenage pop star wannabe looking to have some real cred.

PAT BENATAR

Probably the best singer of the bunch, Pat Benatar brought barroom grit to the big stage. Say what you will about her questionable fashion choices, Pat was purely authentic. No focus groups were polled in the making of her records.

TINA TURNER

Okay, a litle unfair since she started her career in the 1960s but Tina Turner's biggest success came in the '80s with her Private Dancer album. She's everything a female pop star should be: sexy, soulful and spontaneous.

CYNDI LAUPER

Her makeup, hair and general quirkiness overshadow the fact that Cyndi Lauper was one the most soulful chicks to come out of the '80. She could hang with Aretha Franklin and sing Marvin Gaye tunes (check her cover of "What's Going On"). Let's see Miley attempt that.

THE BANGLES

The Bangles are proof that short skirts and electric guitars go hand-in-hand. They are one of the great all-girl groups, backing up their looks with a serious pop-rock pedigree. Plus they had harmonies and guitar jangle for days.

I purchased the 7Things video. I think this young lady is just enjoying being a teenager.
I was not able to create a iMix to share on the website but get her video and songs at the link iTunes.

Miley is good yes and dose a great job at getting younger fans. But I thank if she dose want to get older groups of people to lision to her she well have to change a few things. But she is still young and has a bit to lurn before she trys something like though

I have a 6-year-old daughter and I think Miley is very age appropriate and an overall good roll model for young girls. Any mother (decent) that is, should be happy their daughters are watching Miley and the closeness she has with her family. Remember the other pop tartlets at 16 years old...I'd cringe if that's what my daughter aspired to be. Or the little sisters. I was totally disgusted with Nickelodeon's decision to keep Spears, the station is now banned in my house. Miley has plenty of time to break away from the mold, she's still young.

uhhh... she is targeting little girls ages 9- 14. it is genius... and who cares if its a fad right now.. she is making more money than everyone posting insulting things about her.. how does that make you all feel.. at age 15, she has more money then we could earn in a life time....

Yes, she is sixteen, and she is performing at a proper place for a young celeb of her age.

But I also think that she is also at an age where she (and her management) need to start thinking about and grooming her for the real world of mature music business, soon to come in her adult years.

So it is time for her to start weaning herself from the ooy-gooy-candy-pop, and start becoming a true mature performer.

It would be very sad to see this successful child star become a lost soul adult star, like Britney Spears, and a number of others like her.

I agree so STINKIN much! It's so true, she's kinda a cookie cutter pop princess.....

47. eed -
Thank goodness someone else sees her the same way I do. She's got no substance. "board room created product" stands out to me. That's really all she is. She's got all this power with her fame, and she can do so much with it, but all she does is be the perfect pop princess.
And her cover makes me want to cry.

She'll mature, I think. With some growing up, savvy marketing and re-invention (who doesnt go through that), she could get some cred. I never thought Sheryl Crow would make it.

49. Dan -
what a waste of money. We should wish her well though with her personal life, it would be nice to see one or two hollywood kids turn into functioning members of society.

50. keving -
you know what else would be cool for her?
if she started playing guitar on stage.
supposedly she knows how to.

Just like our government the music industry's control people have turned the music scene into a theme park pay for the day fun ride where nothing is real and everything is just eye candy, however in thier defence our society has not produced a QUALITY MUSICIAN in 2 decades or more, why do you think today's youth game's such as " Guitar Hero " have only song's from the 70's & mostly 80's ?, because modern music is just like Miley Cirus- SHALLOW no heart felt music with substance, People like EDDIE VAN HALEN or JIMI HENDRIX what happened to our society that we don't produce people like that anymore????,.

Back off people!
She's 16 and she DOES have a unique and lovely voice. I listen to her every night with my daughter as she drifts off to sleep.

Give her a chance to grow and develop. Of course she doesn't have the edge of the singers mentioned in the article. She's about 10 years younger than the youngest of that group when they became a hit!

Sheesh!

53. Yahoo! Music User -
I agree with Krystal S Miley sings like a man "I want to thank my fans for coming to listen to my crap." Miley Schmiley - GET A LIFE!

54. matthew t -
To Comment 11.

She is not comparing them to the likes of Tina Turner. If you actually read the article, it told her to take some lessons from those people.

The majority of music I hear blasted from ANY set of speakers nowadays is pretty disheartening. I can't stand how fast of lot of these one hit singles are "in" for a moment and "out" the next. Miley Cyrus was literally unheard of by anybody with whim I acquaint myself but all of sudden in a period of a few short weeks she is on top of the world to everybody else. I often have to turn my radio off these days because nothing artistically appropriate seems to hit the airwaves anymore. I literally cannot listen to a full sit down of anything Miley Cyrus, The Pussycat Dolls, Danity Kane, Britney Spears or any of the other female artist (or most male artists for that matter) cranks out from their producers. Living in Alaska people are finally starting to see eye to eye with me on DJ T Martin... He's whack... all of these so called artists are. Technically, these people know how to make music... So many beats per measure here make up said phrase hear with what we call a bridge here and we mark it all down here on this staff for record keeping (according to what was learned in class these people all get an A+). Artistically, I'm sad that I live in this day and age... One of the dopest albums I've heard in the last five years is Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics. She went back to music was about feeling and not about the quick buck or new fad. To Soulja Boi, Daddy Yankee, 50 Cent, Rihanna, and most of you other top artists out there today... way to be at the head of the class. I'll be the one in the back with the real artists.

56. Dancer -
you guys are idiots. the girl is 16 and a celebrity. of course its easy for you morons to tell her how to lead her life from the sidelines. give me a break.

57. Yahoo! Music User -
Anyone remember Tiffany? Ok..so Miley is the thing now...for kids. Let her have some fun.

58. matthew t -
To all saying she's just a kid being a kid and it reflects in her music.

The problem is that her fans grow up. They'll stop listening to her music. They'll move on. So unless Miley starts to mature in her music, it won't survive.

Perfect example? Hillary Duff.

59. SJM -
i would bone her still

60. chenomenzeljesusfreak -
as much as i love miles, i think she needs to take a little break and pull away from the bubblegum pop. because it really isn't her, and neither are her most recent songs. i know she has a God-given talent, she just needs to add a little more of herself, and her faith into her rep. i hope that she finds a way to spread the Word through her music. and because she is so popular she should take advantage of this opportunity as much as possible. but i understand why she still hasn't done anything more outgoing with her faith.

LOVE you milEy! i'll pray for you!!
