My Birthday Gift to Miley Cyrus: Lessons on How to ROCK

Posted Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Miley Cyrus is on top of the world. She's celebrating her 16th birthday at Disneyland, she's got a(nother) hit album, and every girl wants to be her. Only one problem. SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO ROCK. Miley Cyrus represents everything that's wrong with current pop music. It's fabricated, phoned-in, self conscious, soulless, board room created product. It's style over substance and has no ability to generate feelings other than the urge to buy a matching Miley Cyrus lunchbox.

On Miley's new album she covers Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Instead of taking a cue from Cyndi's '80s thrift shop soul, Miley turns the song into a hopped up, cut-and-paste exercise. Not one bent note. Not one hiccup. Not one strip of pink in the hair. The girl doesn't swing.

Miley could learn a thing or two from the great '80s rock chicks; artists who weren't tied to a teleprompter or afraid to let their mascara run. Miley needs a serious primer. So here are some singers I hope Miley has in her iPod while she's standing in line for Space Mountain. Consider it an early birthday gift. No thank you card is necessary.

CHRISSIE HYNDE

The grande dame of '80s rock chicks. She was sultry and cool. Plus, she written some of the best rock songs EVER! Chrissie Hynde is the blueprint for any teenage pop star wannabe looking to have some real cred.

PAT BENATAR

Probably the best singer of the bunch, Pat Benatar brought barroom grit to the big stage. Say what you will about her questionable fashion choices, Pat was purely authentic. No focus groups were polled in the making of her records.

TINA TURNER

Okay, a litle unfair since she started her career in the 1960s but Tina Turner's biggest success came in the '80s with her Private Dancer album. She's everything a female pop star should be: sexy, soulful and spontaneous.

CYNDI LAUPER

Her makeup, hair and general quirkiness overshadow the fact that Cyndi Lauper was one the most soulful chicks to come out of the '80. She could hang with Aretha Franklin and sing Marvin Gaye tunes (check her cover of "What's Going On"). Let's see Miley attempt that.

THE BANGLES

The Bangles are proof that short skirts and electric guitars go hand-in-hand. They are one of the great all-girl groups, backing up their looks with a serious pop-rock pedigree. Plus they had harmonies and guitar jangle for days.

Honestly I don't give a crap, Miley Cyrus is like Hilary Duff. I used to be a fan of the HM theme but then realized that I was doing the same thing again. So i stopped liking her and started loving ACTUAL singers, not some Bubblegum pop star. Honestly and truthfull, her half brother is WAY much better!

82. Alysha -
I think you're forgetting that she's 16.
and on the disney channel.
give her a break.

83. peter y o a -
If she could only gradually go into womanhood.
Too bad they turn into Tanya Tuckers and Tiffanies before they settle down and come to terms with who they are. And we have to go along for the nasty ride!
There's already the foreshadowing of this. Damage control goes only so far with media.

"ya shes said before that she wants a more mature scene, if thats what she wants then she needs to go for it and leave disney, hopefully she wont turn out too be a dud after leaving disney like other artists have.."--joeyhungerford

Dud like other artist who got their start with disney? Yeah Justin, Christina, Britney, bunch of duds.

85. Tam -
SHE IS JUST A KID! LOOSEN YOUR BELT AND LIGHT'N UP.

86. Karl Hungus -
Maybe someone could teach her how not so suck and stop taking whorish pictures.

87. Emily -
LOL I agree with ItsMyOpinion. Let her be a kid! Let her sing her cheesy pop songs!

How much substance does ANY 16 y/o have? Walk around any mall after school hours and find me the kids that really have anything relevant to say. They don't. = P* Some try, but in all honesty the average 16 year old doesn't have enough life experience to be anything but a teenager.

Anyway, Miley is making a gazillion dollars being all bubblegum pop. Even if she flops horribly in the future, chica is set for life, thanks to Disney's squeaky clean polishing of her and boardroom marketing.

Thank you.
I do agree that she needs to break away to be a good artist, that is assumeing that she wants to be one.
But I do not agree with the short skirt thing. She is only 16, she can be an artist and not have to go down 'that' road.
Staying where she is will not help her career.

89. ClarkK -
Whatever you think her talent level is, it doesn't matter. She will be on the scene forever like Justin Timberlake. Get used to her. She's not leaving.

90. Douglas -
Number one thing she should do is to learn how to sing.

91. dj b -
These acts have already been done. Why would she wants to be like them. Be yourself, that who you are. ROck out and have fun. Dont listen to the pricks in this world.

92. Taylor -
I think she is a little fake sometimes... Unlike Hilary Duff. HIlary was safe never did anything wrong. But Miley somehow bugs me and urks me but she sure does have a hit album... But the Jonas Brothers one were better!

93. Jonathan -
Amen. She's as deep as a puddle on a hot summer day. Nothing there.
She is treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality. Thanks for the blog.

So let me get this straight...you're saying that Miley Cyrus, the most famous teenager ON THE PLANET, should follow your advice so she can be a huge star like....PAT BENATAR???? What?????? If Miley is really smart, she'll be careful NOT to make the mistakes that half of those nitwits on your list made. (Ms. Turner, Ms. Hynde being the lovely execeptions to that, of course...no offense to them)

95. RamonM -
I think miley has no staying power cause if she continue to be like this. Hope that she break away from her usual thing on her next album or two.

96. Ryan G -
she looks hot in that pic

97. Smith -
Shes going to be a big has been tramp when she comes of legal age.

98. harriet g -

99. Robert -
before she worrys about learning to rock she needs to learn to sing first

100. GizmosFurBall -
I dont know, I think she is in the wrong place. Why? Well because shes not spread eagle on my bed thats why.... I mean seriously she shouldnt be singing she sucks at that but she should be naked cause she is hot as hell
