My Birthday Gift to Miley Cyrus: Lessons on How to ROCK

Posted Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Miley Cyrus is on top of the world. She's celebrating her 16th birthday at Disneyland, she's got a(nother) hit album, and every girl wants to be her. Only one problem. SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO ROCK. Miley Cyrus represents everything that's wrong with current pop music. It's fabricated, phoned-in, self conscious, soulless, board room created product. It's style over substance and has no ability to generate feelings other than the urge to buy a matching Miley Cyrus lunchbox.

On Miley's new album she covers Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Instead of taking a cue from Cyndi's '80s thrift shop soul, Miley turns the song into a hopped up, cut-and-paste exercise. Not one bent note. Not one hiccup. Not one strip of pink in the hair. The girl doesn't swing.

Miley could learn a thing or two from the great '80s rock chicks; artists who weren't tied to a teleprompter or afraid to let their mascara run. Miley needs a serious primer. So here are some singers I hope Miley has in her iPod while she's standing in line for Space Mountain. Consider it an early birthday gift. No thank you card is necessary.

CHRISSIE HYNDE

The grande dame of '80s rock chicks. She was sultry and cool. Plus, she written some of the best rock songs EVER! Chrissie Hynde is the blueprint for any teenage pop star wannabe looking to have some real cred.

PAT BENATAR

Probably the best singer of the bunch, Pat Benatar brought barroom grit to the big stage. Say what you will about her questionable fashion choices, Pat was purely authentic. No focus groups were polled in the making of her records.

TINA TURNER

Okay, a litle unfair since she started her career in the 1960s but Tina Turner's biggest success came in the '80s with her Private Dancer album. She's everything a female pop star should be: sexy, soulful and spontaneous.

CYNDI LAUPER

Her makeup, hair and general quirkiness overshadow the fact that Cyndi Lauper was one the most soulful chicks to come out of the '80. She could hang with Aretha Franklin and sing Marvin Gaye tunes (check her cover of "What's Going On"). Let's see Miley attempt that.

THE BANGLES

The Bangles are proof that short skirts and electric guitars go hand-in-hand. They are one of the great all-girl groups, backing up their looks with a serious pop-rock pedigree. Plus they had harmonies and guitar jangle for days.

ok i agree to a point i have a 12 year old thats soon gonna be 13 and she loves cyrus and alot of kids do love her as well and i hope she does stay bubble gum for a while longer i mean yes she needs to get a clue and do something diffrent rather then the but at the same time dont make her grow up to soon cause all that is gonna do is make our kids grow up faster cause they all want to be like her wear what she wears talk like she talks etc. and parents know wha ti mean so get a clue and let the girl be a kid as long as she can the "real" world will come soon enough for her

sounds like a bunch of jealous people to me. give the kid a break. she is 16 and having fun.

Why not stretch the success of the Disney Franchise for another year or two. She's only 15. She could then take a year off and truly reinvent her image with soulful songs. She needs to start writing her own music and learn how to play the guitar for concerts.

i hate miley cyrus. She is a bad example for girls and will end up a crack head like all the other celebs.

Leave Miley the hell alone. Last thing we need is another doped up idiot with a guitar band. I wouldn't give you a dime COLLECTIVELY for the entire list of supposed role models.

I miss Marlon and Tito

why is everyone so jealous of this girl? shes got very successful albums, a very successful tv show, and alot of kid idols... thats what she is shooting for, thats what shes got.. dont try to judge her and tell her what shes doing wrong just because you are jealous of her!! let her be a kid!!

129. SMB -
she needs to learn how to sing.

THANK YOU! I agree one hundred percent. This girl is the most annoying thing on this planet.

Yeah, She maybe be sixteen, But she has been taking swings at other artists like i said before with Perry during interviews with the press, If she wants to play ball with big wigs and play adult, i say let her, if she wants to be treated like an adult lets treat her like one......and show how unforgiving the music world can be....

132. Steve H -
She's not a real rocker, she's a teen idol. It's like saying the Olsen twins could learn about acting from Elizebeth Taylor of something. What a laugh.

i totally agree with this blog. there's nothing that shouts "rock star" at me when i look at Miley. nothing in the world would make me purchase her albums or merchandise. i always thought that she fueled her empire from the hopes and dreams of little innocent girls. too bad she isnt one, as events before prooved. if she wants to get us sophisticated teenagers to rock out to her music, she can start getting off her pink bubblegum scented cloud. most real teenagers dont pay any attention to her music and roll their eyes at her dramas. i guess whatever group of people who created the hannah montana image were not targeting us, because none of us really cares. we are not 10 years old. i speak not only for myself but for many teenagers out there, who get their mucical kicks from Blondie's Heart of Glass and old school Billy Idol and Muse when we want some real rock and pop. Miley can wear as many over-desingned outfits on stage with as much glitter and glam as she likes, but we all know there's something better out there. good thing she's getting rich, her musical career will tank eventually when her young audience outgrows her and other kids will be asking "who the heck is hannah montana?"

Geese..does everyone have to analyze every little thing that someone does. The girl is just turning 16 for goodness sakes!!!! She hasn't been there and done that. She is still a teenager with people telling her how to be and she's trying to be herself which at that age you don't know about everything. She still is a person that is learning as she goes like a normal teen and having fun. I'm not crazy about what she sings but I don't have to listen to it. All musicians and entertainers have a starting point in their life and she's still learning about life. Get a grip people.

when does miley become a kid entering teenage life? she is nothing but a money making robot that her parents are profiting on. this is a no brainer! look at all of the hungry money parents living off their kids.
(brittney spears, etc. do you think lynn spears can live her life style? right!)

Who is Miley Cyrus?

137. i_g_g -
She's just a kid. It's absolutely inappropriate for her to try to be sexy or grown up. Let her stay a kid while she can before she has to face the grown up world that can absolutely suck. And btw, her daddy's not a one hit wonder. He's actually had done quite a lot. Know what you're talking about before you speak.

I'm a mother of two young children and I am beside myself that they have someone who is young and acts their age to love. She's sixteen she shouldn't be acting any other way. And it also seems to me alot of these comments are written out of jealousy. For someone with no talent she sure has gotten a long way. And was that freaky guy thing that looked more than stoned on Nashville Star her "Talented brother" she should be looking up to" Yeah that's who I want my kids looking after. If her daddy's money and influence got her where she is why couldn't it get that anywhere. i didn't even know billy ray had a son, so there must be some spark in her somewhere.

139. ajit -
i don't like miley anyway

She is a 16 year old girl that is having fun just being 16. No need to dump Disney she can do that when she is an adult. Let her be a young girl and cut her some slack. Push them to act like an adult and you end up with another Brittney.
