My Birthday Gift to Miley Cyrus: Lessons on How to ROCK

Posted Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Miley Cyrus is on top of the world. She's celebrating her 16th birthday at Disneyland, she's got a(nother) hit album, and every girl wants to be her. Only one problem. SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO ROCK. Miley Cyrus represents everything that's wrong with current pop music. It's fabricated, phoned-in, self conscious, soulless, board room created product. It's style over substance and has no ability to generate feelings other than the urge to buy a matching Miley Cyrus lunchbox.

On Miley's new album she covers Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Instead of taking a cue from Cyndi's '80s thrift shop soul, Miley turns the song into a hopped up, cut-and-paste exercise. Not one bent note. Not one hiccup. Not one strip of pink in the hair. The girl doesn't swing.

Miley could learn a thing or two from the great '80s rock chicks; artists who weren't tied to a teleprompter or afraid to let their mascara run. Miley needs a serious primer. So here are some singers I hope Miley has in her iPod while she's standing in line for Space Mountain. Consider it an early birthday gift. No thank you card is necessary.

CHRISSIE HYNDE

The grande dame of '80s rock chicks. She was sultry and cool. Plus, she written some of the best rock songs EVER! Chrissie Hynde is the blueprint for any teenage pop star wannabe looking to have some real cred.

PAT BENATAR

Probably the best singer of the bunch, Pat Benatar brought barroom grit to the big stage. Say what you will about her questionable fashion choices, Pat was purely authentic. No focus groups were polled in the making of her records.

TINA TURNER

Okay, a litle unfair since she started her career in the 1960s but Tina Turner's biggest success came in the '80s with her Private Dancer album. She's everything a female pop star should be: sexy, soulful and spontaneous.

CYNDI LAUPER

Her makeup, hair and general quirkiness overshadow the fact that Cyndi Lauper was one the most soulful chicks to come out of the '80. She could hang with Aretha Franklin and sing Marvin Gaye tunes (check her cover of "What's Going On"). Let's see Miley attempt that.

THE BANGLES

The Bangles are proof that short skirts and electric guitars go hand-in-hand. They are one of the great all-girl groups, backing up their looks with a serious pop-rock pedigree. Plus they had harmonies and guitar jangle for days.

Miley Cyrus is the Leif Garret of the Y2K...and where is he now? She's a better actress than a singer and owes her fame to her father's connections in the music biz! Whether she lasts only time will tell, but she's already rich enough that she'll never have to get a real job so on that merit alone she has achieved the American dream! Lets hope she doesn't ruin her reputation by turning into a slut like you know who (Spears, Lohan, etc.)!

Have you all lost sight of the audience that she is capturing here.... She is a superstar to LITTLE girls from 3-15. Please let her be the Disney Bubblegum and Glitter child that these little girls have grown to idolize for as long as she can. No need to force the kids of today to grow up any faster than they already are with the influnece of video games, rap music, and adult themed violent sexually oriented television.

Just a thought from a Mom

how about the Go Gos? And Cyndi is the best singer of the bunch, not Benatar.

What music today is not pre-fabbed? I have not heard an original song in years, everything is a copy of something that was already done years ago. Why leave Disney? Her fans will grow up with her and she will always have a fan base to support her.

Miley Cyrus isn't "living off her daddy's checkbook".
She earns WAAAAYYY more than Billy Ray ever did. He's probably living off HER checkbook.
That said, the "music" ain't much, but then I'm not a 9-year-old girl.

MILEY FOR PRESIDENT!!

You people make me sick. Lay off the girl for goodnessake! At least she has a job and a successful career. My daughter loves Miley Cyress and the Hanna Montana show. If that ends so soon she would be devistated. Her image was created for the mindset of my 7 year old and others like her. Leave it alone for a while. She can grow up and become a "real rocker" as you all think she should when she becomes an adult.

miley cyrus should be locked up and shakeled in a dark room to rot

the problem today is that these kids have no feelings to sing about, the worst thing they have to complain about is that their phones ran out of batteries! that's why the songs all suck. there is no meaning, no feeling, no nothing... proof of this is on American Idol, these kids all suck. Yea, they might have a voice ( a few at least) but they can't sing, when they sing old songs they really suck because there is no emotion coming from any of them. Not one singer on AI since Fantasia's "Believe" has brought tears to my eyes, These kids don't know how to rock and they never will, they are "invented" performers, they are prototypes created by promoters and the powers that be and they all lack "that something special" that used to come from real singers and performers.

171. Brittany -
the girl has quite possible the worst voice in the world...i could do better and i cant even carry a tune!

Even if she is a kid, she is in a way, slowly rising up in stats in the music empire, her fans to buy her shirts, albums, lunch boxes - any thing that has her name or face on it at this point it its out of control, AND those pictures of her in a bed sheet are probably brain washing the kids, I hope she will be forgoten soon

173. King of Kings -
miley cyrus for PRESIDENT!

She is a child. I have an eleven year old and she is going to admire and look up to someone....why not Miley. Much better than Lindsey or Brittany. There are always going to be tween stars....they may not have much talent in your book but in my 11 year olds eyes she is great! Remember New Kids on the Block...i think they are awful now...they were pretty good to me in the day!!

A kid is under 12. She's a teenager....oh yeah. yummy. Comparing her to Madonna is like saying Britney Spears is next supastar....... still, oh so yummy!!!

I have to say I understand she does need to mature but even though Im not some Hannah Montanna fan her music is finally giving 10 year old girls somthing to listen to. The songs now day arent the cleanest songs. But like the article says she does need to mature in her music, she probably will.

178. Amie -
This girl is not acting as a usually 16 yr old. Her music is not even real. It sounds as if she is from a fabricated sound machine!

179. Anthony D -
hahaha ok i love music. but how can you judge some one who recreated a version of a hit in the 80's why should she mimic cyndi shes just doing her thing. its like look at fallout boy they did micheal jacksons beat it and so did a band pierce the veil (they did an amazing job)no one is asking them to be more like micheal. Any who she is making tons of cash regardless of your comments let her shine shes doing a great job!

You're just jealous because she makes more money than you.

I find it sad that you would spend your time blogging about how much Miley Cyrus needs to learn how to rock, when that isn't her scene at all. She is a Disney-made star. She is not meant to be a real rock star, but rather a kid to look up to for other kids, giving them hope to achieve their dreams.

And hey, if they remixed a few of her songs, she could be a pretty fab trance artist. I'd dig it.
