Miley Cyrus: Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman

Posted Wed Mar 4, 2009 5:24pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...
Most teen stars don't age so gracefully--anyone who's watched hasbeen-centric "Celebreality" shows like Confessions Of A Teen Idol, Breaking Bonaduce, or The Two Coreys knows this. For every success story like Jodie Foster or Drew Barrymore, there's...well, a whole bunch of Coreys, so to speak.

Miley Cyrus, at ripe old age of 16, is the latest t(w)een star hoping to smoothly transition from pimple-prone pubescent to respected adult entertainer (no, not THAT kind of adult entertainer!), with her relatively mature new song, "The Climb." The country-crossover power ballad (is that her daddy's influence?) may be the theme from the latest installment in her kiddie-friendly Hannah Montana movie series, but it's a much more subdued affair than her past bubblegummy efforts. "Pumpin' Up The Party" it ain't.

In the song's "serious" video, an older and presumably wiser Miley even straps on a guitar (surely she must know how to play it, right? right???); stands triumphantly on a CGI-rendered cliff beneath an aerial-sweeping camera (a scene lifted straight out of an '80s Bon Jovi video); and existentially sings the following grown-up words of woe:

I can almost see it, that dream I'm dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying, "You'll never reach it"
Every step I'm taking, every move I make
Feels lost with no direction
My faith is shaking but I got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

Whoa. That's deep. For Miley, at least.

Of course, the whole song/video is reminiscent of former teen sensation Britney Spears' attempt at mature balladry some years ago--also from a movie, Crossroads--"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman." The video is even eerily similar, right down to the widescreen aerial cliff shots, road-tripping movie scenes, and inspirational Hallmark-card lyrics about how "this girl will always find her way" and "all I need is time":

Well, we all know Britney's post-movie evolution from girl to woman wasn't exactly an easy one. Will Miley, now at a crossroads herself, encounter a similarly bumpy road? It remains to be seen, but if the subdued sound and triumph-of-the-spirit sentiments of "The Climb" are any indication, there probably won't be any head-shaving or underwear-forgetting incidents in Miley's future.

I've had no opinion about Miley for some time now, but if she's going to war on Radiohead, then Miley will lose. She's young, immature, too full of herself, and too full of a sense of entitlement due to her adoring fans. Most of us do not adore her, and now she's given us cause to respect her even less. Her current reasons for anger at Radiohead reveal what a shallow youth she is. Will she write another biography when she's 17 just so she can diss radiohead. She's not very pretty, and inside she's even less so. How can the young one's stand her?

Anyone remember the shameless Disney/ABC cross promotion attempt last year when Miley was live (allegedly) on Dancing With The Stars? She can't sing a lick unless it's through the magic of studio production. And even then it sucks!! Please fade off into oblivion, soon. Isn't there some other no-talent Disney tart ready to take her place yet?

number 8 your right!! miley says tht shes soooo mature and then she makes fun of other celebs. she does need friends her own age. selena and demi tried to be friends but she just pushed them away. she will end up like britney did (shaving her head). disney is just like an adoption center when u reach a certain age, your gone, and on your own

i really liked this song till i found out who sings it..... there is just something about her that bugs me.... o yeah she is one girl who thinks its all about her. maybe to six year olds but not the rest of the world and i really dont think shell ever grow out of that. all its gonna do is make little girls want to be just like her. were gonna have 8 year olds running around in mini skirts. YAY! not that kids arnt growing up faster now then ever i was out to dinner the other night and there was a kid no older then 13 with a blackberry.!.!.!.! god when i was 13 i dont even think i had a video game!

...and Iron Maiden should see to it that she never appears in public again wearing one of their concert shirts! Blasphemy!

What is so funny if you don't like her then how do you know so much about her? I think she is talented but has a way to go. Though I dread that she turns out like the other teens that decided to just party their lives away and end up in all the mess they regret later.

And yes...AC DC kicks major butt.

i dnt like mileys voice at all its "mannish"

Why does she sing/speak like she has a retainer in her mouth, it is really annoying and it comes out in her music. I have nothing against her, as long as she stays where she belongs, which is on Disney channel where the little kids can obsess about her, and off stages like the grammys...

this song is too much for me. miley is WAY too much for me.....i'm really sick of hearing about her. this song sounds like all of her other "inspirational" songs. corny as all get out and just downright annoying.

Country music these days is for failed rockers, it's sort of like the California Gold Rush where everyone jumps on board the wagon trying to make their fortune. Miley Cyrus is no different, she'll go whichever way the wind is blowing hoping to score some money without caring about the music.

She couldn't even win American Idol!

Miley, Miley, Miley. I'm so sick of her. She's just all, "Everyone loves me!If you don't I'll ruin you!"

Bleh.

I'm just glad Britney is back on her feet.

Miley Cyrus is a fool, she is such a poser she just waves the guitar around and plays a simple G and D chord and shakes like shes having a seizure..she has no talent wahatsoever

i love this song! it's amazing!! i don't care personally whether people like her or not but most people on here being mean to her are a lot older than her and shouldn't care anyways and if you do post a comment it should be saying something positive. miley is a beautiful girl and a wonderful singer and i am a big fan of hers i think that when she is ready to totally grow up she will but who isn't silly with their friends sometimes and mature other times?

38. ѕняιѕтι -
at least she's not acting like she's a rockstar or something. she doesn't sing good in anything.

and no.

that song is NOT deep.

I hate miley cyrus.

Don't you?

She is such a shanky little brat who thinks she can get away with everything.... she's not even talented....What is with her anyway 2 identities and now she just wants to be one...she's a DISNEY CHANNEL star and that's all she'll ever be!!! and she should really stop with the stupid you tube videos... GET A LIFE and stop taking pictures of yourself for attention.. no wonder radiohead refused to meet her. i congratulate them!!
