Miley Cyrus: Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman

Posted Wed Mar 4, 2009 5:24pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...
Most teen stars don't age so gracefully--anyone who's watched hasbeen-centric "Celebreality" shows like Confessions Of A Teen Idol, Breaking Bonaduce, or The Two Coreys knows this. For every success story like Jodie Foster or Drew Barrymore, there's...well, a whole bunch of Coreys, so to speak.

Miley Cyrus, at ripe old age of 16, is the latest t(w)een star hoping to smoothly transition from pimple-prone pubescent to respected adult entertainer (no, not THAT kind of adult entertainer!), with her relatively mature new song, "The Climb." The country-crossover power ballad (is that her daddy's influence?) may be the theme from the latest installment in her kiddie-friendly Hannah Montana movie series, but it's a much more subdued affair than her past bubblegummy efforts. "Pumpin' Up The Party" it ain't.

In the song's "serious" video, an older and presumably wiser Miley even straps on a guitar (surely she must know how to play it, right? right???); stands triumphantly on a CGI-rendered cliff beneath an aerial-sweeping camera (a scene lifted straight out of an '80s Bon Jovi video); and existentially sings the following grown-up words of woe:

I can almost see it, that dream I'm dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying, "You'll never reach it"
Every step I'm taking, every move I make
Feels lost with no direction
My faith is shaking but I got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

Whoa. That's deep. For Miley, at least.

Of course, the whole song/video is reminiscent of former teen sensation Britney Spears' attempt at mature balladry some years ago--also from a movie, Crossroads--"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman." The video is even eerily similar, right down to the widescreen aerial cliff shots, road-tripping movie scenes, and inspirational Hallmark-card lyrics about how "this girl will always find her way" and "all I need is time":

Well, we all know Britney's post-movie evolution from girl to woman wasn't exactly an easy one. Will Miley, now at a crossroads herself, encounter a similarly bumpy road? It remains to be seen, but if the subdued sound and triumph-of-the-spirit sentiments of "The Climb" are any indication, there probably won't be any head-shaving or underwear-forgetting incidents in Miley's future.

Ive never been a Miley fan. I don't like her voice, and also I'm not a big fan of pop (but I still like Britney and listen to someof those 90's bands every now and then, can't help it). Popstars sing with their noses (the nasally sound gives it that whiny quality), she sings like that, but has her accent mixed in which makes her sounds really bad (and I like southern accents, im originally from Mississippi). I often wondered if she'd be better suited for country. And i listened to this, and i didnt cringe. I still don't like her, but i think she should stick to country and never go back to pop. When it comes to her music video, the style of it didn't look very original, and her choreography and facial expressions looked stupid at times. Thats just my opinion. And also, just to add, just because people don't like Miley doesn't mean we have no taste in music. It means we like different music. the miley fans make it sound like simply hating miley means that we definitely, absolutley, have no taste. Do the fans forget that there is other music in existence other than hers? Other than just liking really good music, I feel liking a variety of music and being open to other kinds (and other people's opinions) is what having a good taste in music really is. I hope that no one gets insanely offended by my comment (it happens) and I also hope (considering its length) I didn't bore all of you.

Hey look no.20 and no.9, you cannot say people don't have any taste in music just cuz they don't like this song. Its ok, but there are wayyyyyyy better songs than this one...You guys probably are those people who know deep inside their hearts that the pedestal is crumbling.

Everyone is being so mean, let's not forget that she is just a child and if someone talked about your child like that you would not like it. She is succesful because disney has mad marketing power and has made her a sucess. Maybe is acts entitled and selfish but do you know a teenager who doesn't act that way from time to time.

Give her a break, people must like her, someone is buying her music and tickets to her sold out concerts. Let her enjoy her 15 minutes of fame.

Why don't you leave this poor girl alone, she is doing her very best to turn her life around. She made mistakes, well so has everyone else get over it. Brittney good luck to you my hat goes out to you keep up the good work kid'O. Don't let anyone push your buttons your better than they are.

Disney can make even a bag lady a star, it is all about promoting them and giving them a movie or TV show, please Disney find another young teen that young girls can relate with Miley has had her day, now she is too big for her britches and turning into an awnoying person, plus she really cant sing at least Britney can sing

Dear #48,
You don't have a clue do you, dear. I had no regard for Miley Cyrus--good or bad--until she started attacking Radiohead. I was indifferent to Miley, but I am a fan of Radiohead. Your God, Miley, chose to speak negatively and unfairly about my gods, Radiohead, because they, like me, had no interest in her. Miley, therefore, is a brat, a spoiled brat who thinks she's going to get even with Radiohead. It should be fun to watch. Miley has no hope of winning; she's too immature. And, honestly, I'd rather be forever indifferent about petty Miley, but she's the one who's drawn the line. So grow up #48, or go stand in line behind Chris Crocker and cry your eyes out.

53. Teresa -
ok. i don't like miley cyrus but i do like this song. granted, it would be better if someone with more talent would have sang it. but miley did do pretty good.

54. Cha Cha Cha -
I know everybody wants to hate Miley, but you can't deny her talent. (And quit calling her ugly. She's beautiful! Even if she was ugly, she wouldn't be able to help it) She is a much better and deeper songwriter than people give her credit for. "The Climb" is one of her best yet. It's not quite what I'd call country (the instrumental line-up is not twangy enough), but it would make a great country song. If Miley ever records a full-fledged country album (she says she wants to), I would have to buy that.

YUCK!!!!

56. sandyfrazier -
What a boring song! She'd never even make it as a finalist on that crappy sellout show, American Idol! Her talent is so minimal and mediocre. She needs to go back to school, get an education, learn a few things, grow up and learn some skills. If she had a day job, I'd say don't quit!

57. Valerie Blackberrie -
Is she strippin in that music video?
I'm not surprised.

58. Tiffany -
i love Miley and i don't care what any hater says cuz u know there always going to find something wrong with her. she is just a normal teenager trying to get through life like everybody else, of course she is going to make mistakes along the way, we all do. Also she can sing, sure shes not the greatest singer around but she is good, all u haters, can y'all sing?, r y'all singers?, and no she is not going to end like Britney.

59. Jose -
my daughter hates miley cyrus. Especially after my dughter found out out about the video Miley did with her friend Mandy when they were making fun of Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Plus she isnt even a songwriter, her dad writes all her songs for her. Talk about unoriginal...
