Apple Makes NIN Hurt

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:21am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

Future-thinking, technology-embracing Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor--who left Interscope Records in 2007 and now independently releases music using technologies like BitTorrent--recently further delved into the digital age by creating a new, GPS-enabled iPhone app that allows fans to interact with each other at concerts in real time. It's a pretty cool tool for NIN diehards, sort of like a NIN-specialized Twitter.

But the new update of the NIN app seems to have downward-spiraled, so to speak, as it has been rejected by Apple due to "obscene, pornographic, offensive, or defamatory content."

Trent just posted this bummer news on Twitter, saying: "Apple rejects the NIN iPhone update because it contains objectionable content. The objectionable content referenced is [the NIN album] The Downward Spiral."

Trent also discussed the controversy on the Nine Inch Nails website, likening the situation to one NIN dealt with previously:

"I'll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and 'clean' versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc. to meet Wal-Mart's standards of decency--because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you'll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any 'indecent' material for sale--but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film 'Scarface' completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?"

Seems like the iPhone has become a pretty hate machine for Trent.

Besides all this censoring, if I was a musician and a article came out about me, and the reporter had to tie in a album/song title pun into every detail, I would just be, annoyed at least. Come on, your a reporter, not a comedian, stop with the bad jokes.

Also Jasper I reported you for your use of thinly veiled racist terminology. It is apparent that you are the one that is racist here. Your assumptions are also wrong. Their are no Apps on the iPhone or CDs at WalMart made by African Americans that they "let slide". You are just a troll looking to anger people to feed your need for attention which just proves how popular you must be with your peers outside of the Internet.

I am also quite certain that you must be unaware that Trent has been dating an African American woman. It's true I promise... so go throw all your NIN CDs away because
Trent is obviously a traitor to your White Power cause and I can tell you most of his fans would rather you not be counted as one.

I don't really care if walmart does that, but I think it really does hurt them. They should just require someone to be 18 to buy stickered music.

Trent is a musical genius. By offering their last album for free, I think they will end up making more money. I wasn't a fan of NIN until very recently, and I was exposed to more of their music because of the Slip being free and the Ghosts album being cheap. I've bought several other of their albums since then, and I know I'll buy more in the future.

DRAKE? Bite me - screw Wally's Mart!

Way to go Trent! To h*** with walmart! My thoughts exactly about tthe GTA issue. If walmart want to enforce some "decency" (which, yes, they are free to do), then they have a long way to go.

On the topic of banning Walmart, don't do it because of their music censoring, do it because they're an evil corporation that exploits the lower class, participates in sweatshop labor, and sucks the lifeblood out of every community it sets up shop in. The music thing is a drop in the bucket compared to the big picture. Ban Wallyworld, to hell with their "deals." How much of a "deal" is it when jobs are bleeding out because of Walmart's corporate greed? Wake UP, America!!!!

I totally agree with Trent and I don't think that Wal-mart or anyone else has the right to ask an artist to censor their work. That's what parents and warning labels are for.

wal mart exploits children in 3rd world countries, not to mention their employees right her in the states. f*** them on their high horse!

50. Undefined -
I have never supported Wal-Mart. Ever. This gives me another reason. Why would anyone censor music?? Leave it as it is, and don't listen to it. That's it! iPhones suck anyways. I'm good with my Envy2. :]

Everyone has their own opinion of music (NIN RULES!!!), No music should be censored just put a d a m n age limit on it if you really don't want kids listening to it. It's so easy for parents to blame Marilyn Manson for Collumbine, but they can't see that it's their own fault for not raising their kids right. I mean come on! Am I really going to out and f uc k some h os because some rapper told me to?

If you are reading this you have way too much time on your hands. Who cares there are stupid decisions made every day in fact I read several of the comments here. I feel dumber already for reading so many of them

53. edgaraurelius -
Wow, I didn't expect this level of stupidity from Trent. You don't get rewarded for beating up prostitutes in Grand Theft Auto, you only get your money back.

54. Lil' Thug -
This honestly is stupid. I have the NIN app...and the app is available, it was just the update for the app that got rejected. There is nothing indecent about it. It is very much like twitter, but it is mobile and used GPS technology to show users where you are located when you send a message. The only "profanity" could be the messages sent by the users. Otherwise it is a link to the NIN.com page, which, other than music that you can readily purchase on iTunes, there is nothing obscene or profane there. Makes NOOO sense.

55. Kat -
I'm a strict Constitutionalist. I don't believe in censorship or Government limiting any liberties unless they undeniably impinge on others' rights. I haven't shopped at a Wal-Mart in about 20 years for many reasons. The do however, have the right to sell what they wish. This whole argument is idiotic anyway. If you don't like what Wal-Mart does, don't shop there. Simple as that.

56. joep -
come on now Trent dont bring video games into this. You should know better

57. Ashes -
Returning my Iphone sounds like a GREAT plan right now!

58. MackLab -
Damn their treating that like the shaking baby app

59. Yahoo! Music User -
All you kids need to listen to the Sisters Of Mercy, like Trent did.

Yet another reason why the iPhone sucks. More bars more places my ass
