Apple Makes NIN Hurt

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:21am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

Future-thinking, technology-embracing Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor--who left Interscope Records in 2007 and now independently releases music using technologies like BitTorrent--recently further delved into the digital age by creating a new, GPS-enabled iPhone app that allows fans to interact with each other at concerts in real time. It's a pretty cool tool for NIN diehards, sort of like a NIN-specialized Twitter.

But the new update of the NIN app seems to have downward-spiraled, so to speak, as it has been rejected by Apple due to "obscene, pornographic, offensive, or defamatory content."

Trent just posted this bummer news on Twitter, saying: "Apple rejects the NIN iPhone update because it contains objectionable content. The objectionable content referenced is [the NIN album] The Downward Spiral."

Trent also discussed the controversy on the Nine Inch Nails website, likening the situation to one NIN dealt with previously:

"I'll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and 'clean' versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc. to meet Wal-Mart's standards of decency--because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you'll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any 'indecent' material for sale--but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film 'Scarface' completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?"

Seems like the iPhone has become a pretty hate machine for Trent.

Hey that sucks for everyone, but at least he tried, you know. I think Apple should have been flattered. As for me, I like ALL of the NIN songs on The Downward Spiral, and as a matter of fact, I'm pushing play right now to "Piggy" on my Deluxe edition :-)....I love this band a lot.

walmart sucks end of discussion I hate them and their so called deals I love trent

83. Masha -
i love trent and NIN. he's incredibly talented.

I agree with Trent. It's like when Rosie O'Donnel complained against hunters but her show was sponsored by K-Mart that sold guns, it doesn't make sense.

Truth be told, Music doesn't have a rating on it like video games and movies do. They are not suppose to sell Scarface or GTA to a minor (although the employees do it anyways). The only thing I have seen on music is the little label that says "Explict materials" and parents nobody really looks for that anyways.

NINININININININININININIINN!

Apple is being horribly inconsistent since the song is readily available for purchase on iTunes. Pretty stupid to ban something that they've been selling since their inception.

88. Andi -
Yet they let the Baby Shaker app still be up and running? o.O

What is Apple's mindset? NIN is banned, but go on, shake as many babies as you want? If either should be banned it's the Baby Shaker.

Does anyone else find it a bit ironic that the comments are edited for explicit content?

The Store that loses Hub caps during a oil change. Walmart does not realize that Music is a Performing Art. Can't picture if they would sell Ruben"s? Then the networks put I like Big Butts for a Sponge Bob Kid's meal. Guess Big Brother has turned a Blind eye on what is Adult & what is for kids.

The stupidest thing I have heard of is ANYONE buying a proprietary POS like iAnything when you can do less work and get less BS from any old MP3 Video Player Phone

Hey dummies,
Why do you praise Trent for following his convictions and then bash Apple for asserting theirs? Freedom of choice is for Artists AND corporate execs alike. Trent can do what he chooses and so can Apple.

104 Todd Y: OMG! Thank you!!!!! That BK commercial p*sses me off!

And yes, 103 loki, it is lol.

About the WalMart hypocrisy: Don't forget that they, also, sell guns and ammo, explicit adult magazines (not like Playboy but only slightly milder) and adult books, and little girl panties with "Sweet Cherry" written on them.

Even though I'm not a fan of NIN, he has a valid point. Also, as for the app, it shouldn't be banned...No one is forced to buy an app...if you want the app, buy it...if you don't want it then don't buy it.

95. NICK -
once again the american market shows it's ugly face by being the hypocritical puritans. yeah, right!

If some of your people had integrity and stopped shopping at Walmart maybe those horrible stores would go away. Does it really make a difference to you to save .35 cents on a roll of paper towels? Uggg--- Our Walmart has a McDonald's in it. I think that says it all!

While I'll agree this is a free country and Walmart is a free enterprise and can do as they wish with what merchandise they sell, tis completely hipocritic of them to sell edited music while selling mature rated games and R rated movies. If they want music to be edited so completely, then why not demand the same of movies and video games? If you are going to claim to be morally "pure and right" and be an extreme Righist conservative, then go completely that way and not half ass it. Tis people like Reznor who get us to think outside the box, and hopefully these people will continue even when they're shut down by the likes of companies like Apple. Just goes to show you, when even the big dogs frown upon you, tis one more reason to stay one step ahead of the Master Plan!

98. Patrick -
You know Trent may have a point, Walmart wont sell uncensored CD's, but theyll sell Grand theft Auto. Seems like Walmart has no idea what there doing. I hate walmart anyway. They just suck more for being stupid. I am not a NIN fan, but i see where they are coming from on this issue.

Really ?, Apple can just tell people what they can or cannot do with that stupid phone, even after they bought it ? Would that kinda be like buying a car and the dealer telling you how and where to drive ? Ya know, when you sell some gadget, there's no telling how people are going to use it. Thundering asteroids, I'll probly never get one of those phones.

100. Patrick -
Yes, Walmart and Apple do have a right to do what they want...however, hypocrisy does seem to prevail as with all corporations. What you have is 100,000 employees trying to justify their high positions, and coming up with policies every month or so to do so. In my company, we have the same thing. Some of the ideas are so ludicrous that they almost seem unreal. So, a higher-up looks at an issue and makes it his own personal crusade to keep his job. So, to answer the comment above - there is no personal convictions with a corporation, that is why people do not support them. I have never been a NiN fan, but I have to respect Reznor's convictions because he STICKS to them. For Wal-mart and Apple, and Microsoft, and GE, etc, it is all about what will make them money (which I do not bash at all, it is what they are there for), but you cannot say that they have some moral agenda because that is completely untrue. They do sell guns, they do sell/produce violent - sexually provocative video games, etc. All that they are doing in censoring music, etc is appealing to the crowd that is their selling base. If, all of a sudden, the left-winged crowd started being their biggest buyers, their whole Modus Operandus would change, and that goes for any business. They are in business to make money...should be no surprise. If you were in the cookie business, and people wanted sugar cookies - what would you sell? Well, think of that on a multi-million dollar scale. Not saying that I agree, but I do understand.
