Apple Makes NIN Hurt

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:21am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

Future-thinking, technology-embracing Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor--who left Interscope Records in 2007 and now independently releases music using technologies like BitTorrent--recently further delved into the digital age by creating a new, GPS-enabled iPhone app that allows fans to interact with each other at concerts in real time. It's a pretty cool tool for NIN diehards, sort of like a NIN-specialized Twitter.

But the new update of the NIN app seems to have downward-spiraled, so to speak, as it has been rejected by Apple due to "obscene, pornographic, offensive, or defamatory content."

Trent just posted this bummer news on Twitter, saying: "Apple rejects the NIN iPhone update because it contains objectionable content. The objectionable content referenced is [the NIN album] The Downward Spiral."

Trent also discussed the controversy on the Nine Inch Nails website, likening the situation to one NIN dealt with previously:

"I'll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and 'clean' versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc. to meet Wal-Mart's standards of decency--because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you'll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any 'indecent' material for sale--but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film 'Scarface' completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?"

Seems like the iPhone has become a pretty hate machine for Trent.

IQ-insulting puns? You are quite obviously missing most of the picture here . . . a brilliant, brilliant piece of writing. Oh but wait; Lynds, you left your keys here last night . . . they were behind the couch.

Lol. Yeah, its why I run Ubuntu 9.04 and stay away from both Apple and Microsoft as much as possible. Its not entirely possible, but mostly. Open source, free, and not tied down to corporations.

He makes a really good point comparing it to the video games and movies.

Wow, I didn't expect this level of stupidity from Trent. You don't get rewarded for beating up prostitutes in Grand Theft Auto, you only get your money back."

Wouldn't you consider that a reward???

I agree with Trent. Walmart won't sell certain magazines because they are "racy" and they won't sell music that is uncensored, yet they sell just about very rated "R" DVD that hits the market to include unrated directors cuts. One word cmoes to mind. Consistency- which Walmart has shown they are not.

I have to agree with Trent on Wal-Marts hypocrisy. They promote their company as a family friendly atmosphere however, the truth is another story. Consider this, Wal-Mart has the top employee generated lawsuits in this country. Ranging anywhere between sexual harassment to political persecution. This coming treatment of their employees is distressing at best. I know the inside story because I have 3 family members who work at various stores around the company around the country. Its the same in every store. My son goes to college while working at W-M part-time. Every Week his school schedule is messed up because they 'forget' he is in college. Several times he has been called into the store managers office to enquire why he is going to college when he could have a life time career at W-M. Are they serious?? In another incident he had a political poster on his locker for Obama. He was told to remove it. Not because of it being inappropriate it was because it was not a McCain sticker. They told him that would have been fine. What is the deal here? How do they get away with this fascist way of running a big business. I ask you America if freedom of speech means anything to you, boycott Wal-Mart, they are unAmerican.

I Agree... horrible piece of writing... I find it insulting to use the names of his albums in such an elementary manner...esspecially calling the Iphone a "pretty hate machine" Did a third grade student write this???

The iPod initially was sold on the hidden pretense that you can save onto it 10,000 songs...obviously then...of your Napster downloads.

Trent has a clear point about selective censorship. Apple is a corporation so Im not surprised.

Apple doesn't even have flash on their iPhone. And Apple advertises their iphone with a full featured browser. Yeah right, I can't even access most of the websites that uses flash.

I abhor censorship in all forms. Because what's decent to one person may not be all that decent to another. Profanity is subjective. And, I have not bought music or movies from Wal Mart since I learned of their drive towards decency. Why edit music when they're not willing to edit movies or video games? Why not just have the adult advisory on any "profane" material and let the individual consumer make his or her own decision?

As far as the NIN app is concerned, again, what Apple considers profane and what others consider profane may be extremely different. Why ban the app because NIN's music has potentially profane material? Why not have an adult advisory and let their customers decide whether or not they will subject themselves and/or their families to such materials? No one has the right to decide what others see as profane or objectionable.

This is just a NIN Publicity stunt. It's called marketing.
DON'T get fooled again.

PFFT crackers will circumvent apple like they do virtually every other electronic device, give me a break APPLE drinks a 40oz of fail everyday while crackers drink 10 gal of WIN!

no worries ppl NIN app will be available soon.

Hey way to go Apple, you are sooo smart, just keep up the good work ok? Nothing wrong with rejecting Trent's idea alright? You are good all the way, All hail Apple, all hail Satan!!!

116. Michael -
Censorship isn't something anyone wants straight across the board, but it does have it's place and time I suppose. Bottom line is, everyone can now see apple's double standards... we'll do this, but we won't do that, type of BS. No one likes double standards... if you believe in something, stick to your guns and have some integrity. If not, don't pick and chose who you want to make an example of.
