Apple Makes NIN Hurt

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:21am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

Future-thinking, technology-embracing Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor--who left Interscope Records in 2007 and now independently releases music using technologies like BitTorrent--recently further delved into the digital age by creating a new, GPS-enabled iPhone app that allows fans to interact with each other at concerts in real time. It's a pretty cool tool for NIN diehards, sort of like a NIN-specialized Twitter.

But the new update of the NIN app seems to have downward-spiraled, so to speak, as it has been rejected by Apple due to "obscene, pornographic, offensive, or defamatory content."

Trent just posted this bummer news on Twitter, saying: "Apple rejects the NIN iPhone update because it contains objectionable content. The objectionable content referenced is [the NIN album] The Downward Spiral."

Trent also discussed the controversy on the Nine Inch Nails website, likening the situation to one NIN dealt with previously:

"I'll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and 'clean' versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc. to meet Wal-Mart's standards of decency--because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you'll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any 'indecent' material for sale--but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film 'Scarface' completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?"

Seems like the iPhone has become a pretty hate machine for Trent.

Right on, Trent! I hate Wal-Mart anyway. They don't have good enough "deals" to get me in there.

i tink u all r a bounch of spazzaziods nin blows walmart sucks & app just should fall off the map ok rejects

Hey Trent, get out of here, you are over, make way for better music.

Damn. The last thing Apple needs to ban is a NIN app. Alienating NIN fans should not be a smart move for the company. Censorship is an awful thing and Trent Reznor is 100% correct in saying what he did regarding the Wal-mart situation. It's disgusting that censorship is still rampant as it is. Put an age warning on the app like an R-rating like movies and let people 17 years of age or older buy it. Take it away from kids, not everyone else.

1) I bought two of my NIN albums at WalMart (Pretty Hate Machine, Year Zero). I agree with Reznor's point -- it's stupid that WM censors one venue but not another -- but at the same time we need to remember that there are legal boundaries in place for R rated movies or M rated games (under 17 can't buy) whereas there are no laws monitoring who can buy music. So this, in my opinion, is WM's built-in system... "protecting" (if you will) what the law does not.

2) Doesn't iTunes sell the album, anyways? And even if they don't sell that album, they've got stuff 100% nastier. So...

3) All bickering aside, I think that app is kind of stupid. I watched the video demo a while ago and I don't really see the point. Everybody knows where you are at all times... the only "security" feature randomly places you a mile away from where you are. Is Trent going to let us know where he is at all times? Doubt it. So... why should we? I don't see the point. By all means make an iPhone-friendly version of the NIN site, but why do those GPS features need to be there?

Simple, if you don't like WalMart, or Apple don't buy them. With your filty language I'm sure you will be a sucess in starting your on buisness. This country is full of ignorant unschooled people, who think they are cool.

i'm glad trent will stand up for what he wants. yeah it sucks that apple wont let him have his app, but apple is just shooting themselves in the foot. trent will remake the app for some other platform and apple will just lose even more sales. i'm tired of companies thinking they can dictate what they think is decient and try to force it on the masses. let the consumer think for themself and they would probably be pretty surprised how much profit they can make

he is just mad that his band really really sucks, no musical talent what so ever just a bunch of weird crappy sounds to go along with his lyrics that never change between each song he just writes the same thing if your a NIN fan get a life

Walmart is BIG. Most people don't realize HOW BIG! They can do whatever they want to at this point. If you don't like it, shop somewhere else.

I wonder where this country is heading when I read this kind of disgusting trash. Can no one speak in clean English without all the explitives. Perhaps if someone would present a worthy stand or make an intelligent statement, the companies would listen. This trashy talk only defines the talker. Sad commentary for our world.

This is the kinda crap that I hate. Its bad enough that we have to censor everything (As if real life news, and biased documentaries weren't already full of sex, explicit violence, drug and alcohol use). But When do people start taking some responsibility!? Its not like the CDs aren't clearly labeled EXPLICIT or EDITED - so only a moron could make the mistake of buying an 'offensive' product. Grey's Anatomy has more sex than Grand Theft Auto, but Its on Primetime TV! The News is nothing but spun bias about rape, murder, drugs, and what they consider politically important (Highly Biased Political Coverage). We should start censoring the news - NBC, ABC, CBS because those are on TV, without even a concience purchase or download of an app or CD. And where are the parents? If your a parent, and you spend a fortune so your 12 year old can have access to the internet, dont be shocked when he downloads porn! DONT BUY HIM AN IPHONE! Parents take no responsibility, and those who own iphones, and know how to download apps, probably know who Nine Inch Nails is, and I doubt will be seriously offended considering they like their music. Why does Apple feel it necessary to mitigate what people see, do, and enjoy? You might as well ban the internet(full of porn, faces of death, etc), chatrooms(full of sex offenders and like email, open ended enough that someone could send offensive pictures or messages). Apple, if your going to start this step towards social control, ban email, internet, and just about everything because I promise you someone will be offended somewhere. We as people should be offended that apple assumes we are TOO STUPID or PRIMITIVE to understand what we want to use or enjoy. They feel that we arent smart enough to make adult decisions, as if NIN was REALLY the most offensive thing on the Web. Please. Take your fascist tendencies over to China Apple, cause they agree with your control of the media. They shoot their own people at protests and ban the news from saying anything negative about the government. Give people some credit, and the rights after spending a fortune on your crappy phone to use it how they please. Just another sad example of socialism at work people... Thanks apple for being jackasses and insulting every smart individual with an iphone. Oh, and you should ban the camera too. People take nude and upskirt shots with those, so you should just protect us from everything since clearly we arent smart enough to decide for ourselves. Screw you Apple, and Mac Computers suck!...

Is there ANYBODY out there with ANY morals left? Why can't you people just dig what's right and shun what's wrong and do it within yourselves rather than always trying to blame somebody else personally or some billion dollar business entity for what you've already messed up in your life?

153. alex c -
and i agree with shorty, i wonder how many nights trent stayed up at night thinking of that blog he wrote, i meen it is kind of intelligent coming form a guy who basiclly writes he wants to have sex with a girl in every song, yea thats hard to write how about somethign orignal trent?? new lyric content?? no?

154. Rrruf -
this makes me like NIN even better. Art should not be censored and any "so called artist" would not allow their work to be messed with by business persons (who are the complete opposite of "artistic"). WalMart is only interested in immediate sales and return business, not creativity. They do not sell "art". And just like Hollywood movies (these days) they cater to families (not artists) because families spend more money on the surface, where as artists tend to think about the subject and analyze it more deeply before dropping some bucks. Very rare that you find a "business" mind that is also an "artistic" mind... I am an artist, and if WalMart tried to censor me, it would be a compliment....and I would NOT allow them or anyone to touch it. I am not knocking WalMart, I shop there when I need to, BUT "art" is not what they are selling, it's the "price".

Drake must work at Wal Mart...

give'em hell trent

I love you Trent and I think whoever wrote this article and used so many album titles in it is a douche! Apple sucks hairy balls and that's why I own a Zune... full of NIN "terribly profane music." HaHa! I am going to see NIN on May 10 in Atlanta so I have less than a week before I get to see Trent in the flesh! I'm very excited and I am sure this will piss him off and make for more good music! NIN Forever!

158. lostinamerica -
Wal-Mart is a sign of the current decline of Western civilization. A product of the South & it's bible-thumping, inbred B.S. - they'd never be smart enough to understand the genius that is N.I.N. anyway, so screw 'em. Stick by your guns Trent!

159. William -
Walmart is racist towards whites. So is Apple. We need to take our country back. We conservative Christian white Americans are tired of these people ruining our country.

Its always about race, thats why the blacks think they can do whatever they want. And thats why we have SWINE FLU in this country b/c of the damn Mexicans. We should have closed the border.

The Blacks bring RIMS and loud ugly hateful music,
the Mexicans bring freeloaders and SWINE FLU
the Chinx bring Avian Flu & their Communist ideals perfect for Obama
