Apple Makes NIN Hurt

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:21am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

Future-thinking, technology-embracing Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor--who left Interscope Records in 2007 and now independently releases music using technologies like BitTorrent--recently further delved into the digital age by creating a new, GPS-enabled iPhone app that allows fans to interact with each other at concerts in real time. It's a pretty cool tool for NIN diehards, sort of like a NIN-specialized Twitter.

But the new update of the NIN app seems to have downward-spiraled, so to speak, as it has been rejected by Apple due to "obscene, pornographic, offensive, or defamatory content."

Trent just posted this bummer news on Twitter, saying: "Apple rejects the NIN iPhone update because it contains objectionable content. The objectionable content referenced is [the NIN album] The Downward Spiral."

Trent also discussed the controversy on the Nine Inch Nails website, likening the situation to one NIN dealt with previously:

"I'll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and 'clean' versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc. to meet Wal-Mart's standards of decency--because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you'll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any 'indecent' material for sale--but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film 'Scarface' completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?"

Seems like the iPhone has become a pretty hate machine for Trent.

I think that this is just another way of openly denying ppl their freedom of expression. As a musician myself, I think that if and artist uses profanity in their music its done to achieve a certain point or effect, therefore when you edit it out you are denying the listener the opportunity to hear what the artist REALLY had to say. Fk Wal-Mart yo!!!

167. Alan -
I could understand Apple's stance if I hadn't purchased The Downward Spiral on Itunes.

i love nin but being not too tech savvy I do like easy things like iphones and cheap places like Walmart but really they have NO musical selection any way I am not so lazy I would only be influenced by their choice of music

Well, it would seem that Trent has a valid point. Why should the musicians be censored? I find it hard to believe that free speech will corrupt our fragile youth anymore than vicariously blowing the heads off of their video game adversaries. Still, the point is that if both video games and movies are going to be appreciated in all of their explicative glory, then why has Wal mart required that the music industry comply with their arbitrary and unreasonable regulations? Art has a funny way of mirroring life and if the artists themselves are merely drawing back the curtain in a manner of speaking, then they ought to be allowed to do so without fear of reprisal or subjective alienation. C'mon Wal Mart, are you afraid that someone might actually say something true beyond the tendrils of your corporate influence? Give us a break.

this is some BS u can buy games and movies with worse material
so don't ban music is not bad u cant see it u can just hear and it don't make u to do stuff but i bet a movie or game might make u do stuff.

I say three cheers for Walmart, they are not always right but they do seek to moral path. The low morals and ideals of most music today shows way we are a 2nd rate nation today.

173. Sammy -
NIN just should move to a blackberry and avoid apple. Apple has a good product but unforuntately for them, they are only one company and there are plenty of alternatives out there.

174. you silly people -
I'll bet you can get Britney Spears, and various other musicians music that talks about sex, murder, rape, what not.....yes, NIN is a little more hard core, but it's the same idea...and Walmart...hmmm...yes they do sell lots of items that could be considered worse than 1 NIN album..how about a certain kind of ring a man can wear found by the condoms...hmm....i wonder if you have to be 18 to purchase that?

re: Ed M
re: With your filty language I'm sure you will be a sucess in re: starting your on buisness. This country is full of ignorant re: unschooled people, who think they are cool.

Ed M - for one - if you think this country is full of ignorant unschooled people, do you *really* think censorship is the way to fix it?
For two - Do you, yourself, claim to be educated? If so, you'd better check that you've made 3 spelling errors above.

I agree what many have said that they should vote with their dollars and not support the least common denominators as Walmart and ilk. Fight the machine!

Cheers!

Well the way I see it is censorship in Nth degree. Go ahead and publish the app, music, book, magazine whatever...the trouble is with parents not wanting to take responsibility of policing their children's activities. Lazy and indifferent parents need to get up and set standards for their kids and not be afraid that the kids will report them for child abuse because the kid got a spanking for misbehavior. For the most part children will do what you ask or require if they understand the consequences if they don’t, and punishment is not then required. The best punishment is to separate them from all this technology that they think they need (Cell Phone, computer, Xbox…ECT). It’s the parents who should decide which content is appropriate not Wal-Mart, Apple or any other corporation.

As with most censorship, telling me how to think sounds a lot like living in China, Mr Big Brother.

My punishment to you is NOT TO BUY YOUR PRODUCT, thank goodness for competition.

I hate that wal-mart censors their CDs, its retarded. Whats more is that if the cd didn't have a parental advisory in the first place it isn't touched, and I bought a CD that was wayyyyyyyyy worse than many PA albums

yeah, they let the blacks talk about bangin wet [profane] and snorting coke off sum [profane]es tits, but they band this [profane]? wtf? that sounds racist

You ever notice how there is always some inadequate white person on these comment streams that have to bring race up in any discussion posted. This has nothing to do with racism or black people. I don't no any black artist that talks about snortin coke off (profane) tits or banging wet anything that sell cd's in Wal-Mart. This is about Wal-Mart having the ability to refuse and sell what they want in there stores. If you don't like it stop shopping at Wal-Mart, boycott, start a group that is against the policy and procedures of Wal-Mart. But don't bandmouth other races or people because you don't agree with the policies of a company.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Discussing black and white profanity does not get Treznor's application sold in Wal-Mart. Get smart guy.

180. Zach -
Who actually buys CD's anyway? I don't remember the last time I walked into a store, Wal-Mart or otherwise, and purchased a CD? Good for Trent for not altering his art for corporate America.
