Chairlift Gets A Boost From iPod Nano Ad

Posted Tue Sep 16, 2008 12:15pm PDT by Suzanne Baran in As Heard On...
If you haven't seen the commercial for the brand-new, even slimmer iPod Nano--now is your chance:

Apple made Canadian indie artist Feist a star, and after the MacBook Air ads, Israeli singer-songwriter Yael Naim became ubiquitous every time the ad ran between our favorite TV shows.

Most recently, the Ting Tings' tune, "Shut Up And Let Me Go," was featured in heavy rotation for Apple's iPod + iTunes ad.

This time, the marketing gurus at Apple create another feast for the senses. The commercial begins with iPod Nanos lined up in a rainbow patterns sprawled with album art on their screens. Virtual paint starts to drip down from each device. Lyrics play in the background: "I tried to do handstands for you / I tried to do handstands for you / Every time I fell on you, yeah / Every time I fell for you-ooh-ooh-ooh / For you."

The lucky band behind the song is Brooklyn-based trio Chairlift. Their tune "Bruises" is upbeat and bubbly in the electronic, avant-pop tradition, with a light synthesizer sound.  The song is featured on Chairlift's 2008 debut album, Does You Inspire You, and the group will be open for the newly-popular indie band Yeasayer.

You can find out more about the band here.

Apple ads ALWAYS get the background song stuck in my head--they're really good about selecting songs that resonate. This one does especially well, tying in the lyrics nicely with the rainbow of various colors available in the new line of nanos.

I thought it was very catchy and fun, but I still went back to emo depths and turned on "Stars" on my mp3 player as soon as I watched the trailer here.

Still. It's awesome to learn about new bands just through commercials. Thanks so much for the info!

Funny how Feist had like 4 Grammy nominations or so, but sounded HORRIBLE live @ Grammys.

The Ting Tings got a couple VMA Nominations, but sounded HORRIBLE live @ VMAs.

I heard Yael Naim perform live on several talk shows this summer, and she sounded HORRIBLE live.

This Chairlift crap sounds horrible in general.

an apple commercial did not make feist a star. she has been famous in the indie scene with broken social scene for the last 10 years. BSS songs were on various car commercials and tv shows LONG before the ipod commercial last year. i hate mainstream editorials that don't know anything about music besides what they see on mtv.

Can you not find anything more worthwhile to sing about than handstands? Why dosen't the true great music out there get any credit or airplay, you know those bands that actually have something worthwhile to say?

that song... *sticks out tongue*

This song is crazy and fun. I love it.

Apple does so much for several 'not-so-recognizable' bands. For those needs driven consumers and the like, Apple's creative yet simple advertisements are like drugs. Their advertisements, having so much air time create such a known song. Sure people should know about the rest of the Gorillaz discography and same for Feist. But a lot of people don't care this much and seeing a song on the Apple commercial is good enough and off they go to iTunes and purchase the hit. Hopefully Feist and the like bands receive a good amount of royalties.

i thought it was feist again
