New Lennon Ad: All You Need Is Laptop

Posted Mon Dec 29, 2008 2:17pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

It may seem hard to believe in this era of ubiquitous commercial song placement, but when the Beatles' "Revolution" was used in a 1987 Nike ad, it caused a major uproar among Fab Four fans, who cried sellout.

However, more than two decades later, Paul McCartney is selling CDs at Starbucks, Ringo Starr is starring in commercials for everything from Pizza Hut to Oldsmobile, and logical Beatles successors Coldplay and U2 are shilling for iTunes. So a new beyond-the-grave ad starring John Lennon--while a little creepy--shouldn't create too much of a fuss in 2008.

Furthermore, the new ad is for the One Laptop Per Child Foundation, a charity organization that supplies solar-powered computers to the world's poorest children--so accusations of "selling out" are hardly appropriate here. It is a little disconcerting to hear Lennon's digitized voice say, "You can give a child a laptop," when laptops didn't even exist at the time of his death in 1980...but John's widow Yoko Ono granted the charity full permission to air this ad.

Sure, Yoko probably wouldn't want her husband's Scouse accent digitally recreated for, say, a Pizza Hut promo spot (sorry, Ringo). But obviously, and understandably, she believes the One Laptop Per Child Foundation is worthy of Lennon's legendary voice.

Granted, it's a somewhat robotic voice--specifically, archived bits of Lennon audio cobbled together via computer--but the overall effect is certainly a lot more tasteful than that time the late Fred Astaire waltzed with a vacuum cleaner during a controversial Super Bowl ad. Vacuuming is indeed a noble pursuit, but funding unprivileged children's education is definitely nobler, after all.

Watch the new One Laptop Per Child PSA here. It's John Lennon, and surely he would approve this message:

On the other hand, the video editing of him supposedly speaking really is a tremendous achievement. Kudos for the skill of whoever did the video editing, and a big YECCCH for whoever thought of this and got it produced.

it sounds like a bad Duey Cox impersonation, it's an extreme exaggeration, john never really sounded like that .

noooooooo that just hurts

I think this is right in line with the things John Lennon was about. If it was for pepsi, that would be upsetting.

whoa.....that is creepy

Oh my gosh, that's so sad. John Lennon should be left alone, he left such an incredible legacy with his music and the life he actually lived, please don't cheapen his legacy. This just makes my heart cry for such a brillant man.

"...and logical Beatles successors Coldplay and U2 are shilling for iTunes."

how is Coldplay a logical Beatles successor? That is just completely wrong to say on so many levels.

That is amazing! He continues to do his work.

very creepy commercial. i could see someone else talking while John Lennon's son IMAGINE played in the background but, endorsing a product/charity from beyond the grave? very creepy indeed.

I know the videos bad quality, but his words don't match his lips. It's not real. He should rest in peace quietly.

are you serious..lets see we cant even feed people in our own country but lets start a charity to give all the poor africans a laptop... what about all the people in our own country that are starving...o and who will teach these kids how to use a computer if they are truely in the poorest places.. seriously... step back and take a look at this

"logical Beatles successors Coldplay"

What? Coldplay? Are you high?

Problem is, the vast majority of computer users today have no idea who John Lennon was.

He died 28 years ago this month, and even if you were 10 yrs old then, you probably still don't remember him.

That was really freaky.

The commercial sucks as does the cause...again society has to penny up money they don't have or are quick losing to help those "underprivileged" get something many middle and lower class kids cannot afford to get from their parents. Pick up a book and learn to read and write...its cheap and sorely needed in today's quickly dumbed up society-ever read what the illiterates write on these sites like this? After they learn the basic skills they can learn the PC skills in school where they belong...and leave Lennon alone, he was much more conservative then was led to believe., it was the drugs talking in the 60's..he said as much before he died

we see where some people's minds are they want to commercialize charity's even from those who have died and gone to heaven. LET THE DEAD REST that ad should be pulled and the company who started it sued bc of the right of john lennon being deceased.

...That is creepy...but at the same time, really, really cool.

Bad taste and the graphics suck.
