New Lennon Ad: All You Need Is Laptop

Posted Mon Dec 29, 2008 2:17pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in As Heard On...

It may seem hard to believe in this era of ubiquitous commercial song placement, but when the Beatles' "Revolution" was used in a 1987 Nike ad, it caused a major uproar among Fab Four fans, who cried sellout.

However, more than two decades later, Paul McCartney is selling CDs at Starbucks, Ringo Starr is starring in commercials for everything from Pizza Hut to Oldsmobile, and logical Beatles successors Coldplay and U2 are shilling for iTunes. So a new beyond-the-grave ad starring John Lennon--while a little creepy--shouldn't create too much of a fuss in 2008.

Furthermore, the new ad is for the One Laptop Per Child Foundation, a charity organization that supplies solar-powered computers to the world's poorest children--so accusations of "selling out" are hardly appropriate here. It is a little disconcerting to hear Lennon's digitized voice say, "You can give a child a laptop," when laptops didn't even exist at the time of his death in 1980...but John's widow Yoko Ono granted the charity full permission to air this ad.

Sure, Yoko probably wouldn't want her husband's Scouse accent digitally recreated for, say, a Pizza Hut promo spot (sorry, Ringo). But obviously, and understandably, she believes the One Laptop Per Child Foundation is worthy of Lennon's legendary voice.

Granted, it's a somewhat robotic voice--specifically, archived bits of Lennon audio cobbled together via computer--but the overall effect is certainly a lot more tasteful than that time the late Fred Astaire waltzed with a vacuum cleaner during a controversial Super Bowl ad. Vacuuming is indeed a noble pursuit, but funding unprivileged children's education is definitely nobler, after all.

Watch the new One Laptop Per Child PSA here. It's John Lennon, and surely he would approve this message:

John Lennon still sucks

good cause, but they could have used yoko ono, she's a celebrity too, sort of!!! Then she could have said something about him or suggest that he too would have found the cause worthy. just my two cents.

165. ICEMAN -
wait until they start making movies with dead actor via CGI. interesting though

I think it is ridiculous to fathom that every child should have a computer! What! Just what the poorest of the poor are wishing for. Come on people, there are people starving and dying and we want to give them a laptop? If I were the poor kid, I'd think oh cool, maybe I can sell this laptop for food for my ENTIRE family for a few months or so. Also, how do you know that the kid has the ability to read and write much less use a computer.

This is just an odd idea to grab attention. I love to hear music being played on TV from an artist living or dead but to make him say something that he really didn't say is just Whacked out.

o.k. That was soooooo creepy, i know kids need laptops, but we need living people to sell them.

Wow. That's sweet, but beyond creepy. I agree with LuLuBee.... doing commercials beyond the grave is just weird, not to mention unnatural. I think we're using a little too much technology these days.

What's next John Belushi endorsing Trojans LOL....

I do think its a great cause, and surely he would support it. I mean, who wouldn't? The thing is, its not really him speaking. And that just strikes me as a bit unethical.

cuel.

174. Wallace -
I dunno....it was kinda nice to hear his voice again, creepy or not.

This isn't just wrong, its for a questionable cause. Its bad enough that John Lennon has been exploited beyond the grave, but why is it so important to have One Laptop Per Child except to boost sales for the tech industry? Laptops are great APPLIANCES, but they are not a necessity. I worked for a PC manufacturer until last October, and I never saw the point of giving both my kids a laptop. I want them to have a NORMAL life where they play outside and have real friends. Okay?

Seriously, think aobut it. Since most adults don't have a notebook and are happy that way, why do we need to shove one into the hands of every child in the world? Somehow, I think John Lennon would be revulsed by the notion.

Why is a dead celebrity the perfect spokesman for this charity? I don't get it. Is it to show the amazing things that can be accomplished with computers and that's why all the African children need one?

177. Katie -
I'm poor. Can I have a free laptop?

178. Tom -
Whatever good message is meant to be conveyed by this message is obliterated, because all we can do is think about "how did they do that?" and ponder its creepiness. Nice try, but there's plenty of living people who could lend their voice to this effort without giving it so many Future Shock overtones.

179. ddie -
... so when Apple or Microsoft come out with a new "Imagine" gadget, is Lennon going to endorse it from the grave too?

CREEPY!!!!
