Souls Of Mischief: Infinite Dopeness

Posted Tue Apr 21, 2009 9:58pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Not too many hip-hop artists can boast being in the game for more than 15 years. And of those still around, even fewer exude style and finesse comparable to their seminal work. Though I'm way late on this one (props to 2dopeboyz.com, thanks for the photo Meka), I need to shout out my Bay Area brethren Souls Of Mischief who kick off their new EP Montezuma's Revenge with "Tour Stories."

With Domino on the beat and Prince Paul on production, the humming jazz-laced track is as mesmerizing as their classic "'93 ‘til Infinity." While their contemporaries measure their success by units sold, fame and riches, the Souls lend deeper perspective.

Their narratives about the "pandemonium" they experience in each city visited and the dream realized speaks volumes to their appreciation of their artistry. It is echoed in part of the chorus: "We used to dream about this, never thought it would be real, now we on planes, trains and automobiles."

But it is part of the last verse that really puts things into perspective. It is the story of a proud uncle congratulating his musically inclined nephew whose talents have taken him and his crew around the world.

While the story is of an uncle giving props to his nephew, most importantly, it is an elder stateman acknowledging the accomplishments of a legend in the making. It's affirmation that along with all the Mischief the Oakland boys have stayed true to their Souls.

When I talk to kids that have never heard of Souls except from watching an interview with Kanye West, Iwant to vomit then I feel old. Some of the greatest Hip Hop of all time. Now I only look to the basement for music. Missy Elliot and Timbaland killed hip hop.

Beyonce' ... wow, if there is a Black Bimbo then this is classic. She is it!

The entire industry and culture is corrupt, tainted and exploited...Beyonce' is yet another pop figure who needs to humble herself. Your ego deserved the hack and attack. Get real Bimbo - look how you make a living.

I had a kid about 8 years ago askin' me who is that guy tryin' to sound like Magoo. I said , " Boy that is blasphamy. Magoo sounds like Q-Tip." Hip - Hop was my love but now I let her go and see if she comes back" actin' Right"

This has been one of the most slept on groups in hip hop. The thing is that yall didn't see them when they with other underground groups freestylin' on the corner of Durant and Bancroft st. in Berkeley. Only thing that compare to that moment was Hip Hop in the park in NYC. Glad to see some dap being spread for them.
