Chris Brown Avoids Jail Time

Posted Mon Jun 22, 2009 4:13pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training
Chris Brown will not serve jail time in connection with the February 8 altercation with Rihanna that left his former girlfriend's face bloodied and bruised.

The incident is no longer alleged as Brown pleaded guilty Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the Associated Press reports. Instead of beginning the scheduled preliminary hearing, Brown admitted to one count of felony assault.

Because of Brown's plea, Rihanna did not have to testify, even though she was on hand to do so.

While there have been rumors that Brown and Rihanna were maintaining a relationship, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg issued Rihanna a stay-away order.

This order requires that Rihanna and Brown stay 50 yards apart. They are allowed to come within 10 yards of each other when attending an industry event. The judge imposed this order even though Rihanna had not requested it.

On August 5, Brown will be sentenced to five years of supervised probation and six months of community labor, according to his attorney Mark Geragos.

Schnegg felt optimistic that Brown would be able to complete his community service in Virginia, his home state. Brown will also be required to take domestic violence courses and return to California every three months for updates.

Schnegg applauded Brown for admitting guilt. "I think it's commendable you took responsibility for your conduct," Schnegg said.

Brown and Rihanna, two of music's biggest young stars, have dominated tabloid news for months as the media speculated exactly what happened on February 8 after the couple left Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party.

Neither party spoke to the media about what happened; however, the police report indicated that Brown attacked Rihanna before fleeing the scene in the Hancock Park section of Los Angeles.

In May, Brown released a YouTube video in which he claimed that he was not a monster, in response to those who pre-maturely labeled him guilty.

Five years of probation is a long sentence, especially for a 19-year-old. But Brown is fortunate that he does not have to serve any jail time.

Schnegg served both Brown and Rihanna justice by imposing the stay-away order. If the two are still together or considering reconciling some sort of intervention is needed to help them pursue a healthier relationship.

Requiring Brown to take domestic violence classes is also important. However, if rumors are true that Brown and Rihanna had a volatile relationship, and the February 8 occurrence wasn't the first violence exchange, I think it would be helpful for Rihanna to also be required to take some type of course.

Some of these philosophies were expressed in a blog I wrote in March (Chris Brown And Rihanna: Domestic Violence Rampant Among Teens) in which I interviewed several professionals who work in social services.

I hope Brown and Rihanna and get back this ordeal. They are still extremely young and talented.

This happens everyday in millions of homes around the world. So I say everyone shoud just stay out of it. In half of these cases, the couple stays together regardless of what court orders they have against each other!!! Its between the two of them!

We personally don't know this two people like they are our best friends so we have no place judgeing them. I hope the best for each party and may peace come of this but to label people that's not right, we don't know them. As for Yahoo! Music User don't try to convince people to boycott his music cuz look at all the rappers out there that talk about "violence, drugs, guns, homies", etc... Whatever happened is between those two not the whole world.

violence is never the answer only for cowards.l

I think its BS you can buy your way out of the wrong side of the law!! Harsher punishments for those who probably have minor cases but cant afford a represenitive so they taste the harsh crack of the whip, while other who just buy their way out of any punishment just get a slap on the wrist!! You call that justice??? it should be done on a scale of what youve done, not the scale of how much money you can offer them.

Getting off the hook easy Chris Brown only sends a NEGATIVE MESSAGE" TO OTHER YOUNG GUYS HAT IT'S O.K. TO BODILY HARM / ALMOST BEAT THE WOMAN BEYOND RECOGNIZATION AND HE ONLY GETS PROBATION FOR 5 YEARS???

IT's over now. Ther have been others who got off a lot easier (remember that store owner who shot the teenager in the back in the head over a bottle of orange juice? She got five years informal probation for murder). Where is the mass conservative media outrage for this?

women get beat up everyday, but yet we don't speak about it. Rihanna gets beat up and its the sign of the RAPTURE. stacy down the street gets beat up everyday, and is he on the cover of every magazine?? its a double standard, violence does not discriminate, so if rihanna is going to be in the media for assault, then every other women that gets beat around needs to be on the front page cover. We forget that they are normal people just like us, and they deserve to be treated just as that, i'm not saying that what chris brown was right, but rihanna isn't so innocent as the media portrays her two bem and until both sides of the stories have been announced, it is wrong for us to take sides on what we don't know, unless we were there.
Remember everyone of us have a lil Rick James in our veins...lol

Look personally I could care less what happens. I just want to hear another Chris Brown cd and Rihanna cd. They're entertainers, which means they're hear to entertain. Not to be role models for your chlidren, be a role model for your own children. Another thing is behind the lights and cameras they're still regular people who deal with regular issues. This is just a bump, in their high way of life. The case is closed, he's being punished for his actions and thats that. Now get back to the music which is their job and keep their personal lives out of the press please.

**another note which was previously state**
Yes most people who are involved in domestic violence do stay together. I know someone who's boyfriend went to jail for years, for beating them. When he got out they married. Theres nothing we can do but talk to them. Both parties are involved and the decisions are made my both parties.

MAKE MUSIC PLEASE!

I think that chris brown should not have to go to jail but he should have to get some help bout his anger!

19. Belinda -
What Chris did was wrong.
However, he did not "get off". He will now have a felony on his record and cannot vote..... I pray that this will change his behavior toward women. His life will forever changed. Also note that they both have money so it was not a matter of dollars getting him off.

Dam if it were an average man he would have served time. Unbelievable how he got away with strangling her, to me that's attempted murder. For the sake of women, Rihanna should react and make the correct desicion by leaving him now that lots of young girls look up to her. She should know he'll kick her ass again, give him time....

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
