Chris Brown's Label Says Leaked Songs Are Old
Chris Brown's record label squashed rumors Wednesday that newly leaked songs were actually old demos.
The clarification was important
because one of the songs in particular is called "Not My Fault." It would have been
in extreme poor taste for Chris to release that song just a day after striking
a plea deal, admitting guilt to one count of felony assault against his former
girlfriend Rihanna.
"Countering misleading reports of ‘new' Chris Brown music: there are no ‘new' songs from Chris Brown currently being promoted by Chris or his record label," a spokesperson for Jive Records said in a statement, MTV reports. "There are several old demos circulating that are being falsely promoted as new material from Chris."
The question that is not addressed in the statement is When was the song "Not My Fault" recorded? The lyrical content does not describe domestic abuse, but instead is about a man who had a fling with a girl who is upset because she wants more from the relationship.
Chris sings, "See the mama called me to release some steam, said my daughter won't eat and she don't sleep. She just cries ‘cause you're in her mind."
He adds that it is not his fault that she has gotten "caught up." The Neptunes producer Pharrell Williams provides ad-libs on the song.
Still, there are several elements of the record that would make its existence interesting if it was in fact recorded after Chris' February 8 altercation with Rihanna.
"That's not my fault" is part of the chorus that is replayed throughout the song.
The record opens with Chris reading a newspaper and seeing a headline about him breaking the heart of a lover.
The chorus also makes references to "arguing" with a woman.
Clearly, whoever leaked this song wanted to spark a buzz and get listeners to speculate. It feels like Chris could be sending a rebuttal in code to the news outlets that pegged him as a "monster."
