Janet: "Feedback" Is In

Posted Wed Jan 9, 2008 5:10pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Things have been rough for Janet since she flashed Super Bowl XXXVIII viewers in 2004.

Let me rephrase that.

Things have been rough for Janet since Justin Timberlake helped her flash Super Bowl...

Unfortunately for Janet, the wardrobe malfunction happened at the wrong time. Tabloid media, internet gossip and E! True Hollywood Stories had already desensitized the public to ridiculous celebrity woes.

It's kind of hard to feel sorry for someone who was born into one of entertainment's most noted families, yet managed to expose one of her nipples during the halftime performance of one of the country's biggest annual family events.

The incident and the FCC backlash put the pressure on Janet's Damita Jo album. But Damita Jo couldn't handle it. And neither could 2006's 20 Y.O. While I personally liked both albums, neither delivered the impact necessary to shut down the haters.

When R. Kelly's sex abuse scandal hit, his infectious "Step In The Name Of Love" refocused the fans on his music. Mariah Carey recovered from her public mental meltdown and Glitter flop in 2005 with "We Belong Together" which set a record as the most played song in radio history.

Janet's forthcoming Discipline album needs to deliver her the same type of career blessing.

Janet's brand new single "Feedback" is the only track I've heard so far. Produced by leading R&B hitmaker Rodney Jerkins, it is a safe, pop-leaning dance track that reintroduces her on familiar territory. But more importantly, it sets her up for the video, the medium she owns.

Janet wannabes Ciara, Britney and Rihanna wished they looked this good in their twenties, much less in their early 40s. Janet proves that she is still an exceptional dancer, bouncing around in space and in a computer generated pond of milk in one of her trademark cat suits.

It's got me hoping that I'll get a bit more of the old Janet this time around.

Seeing Beyonce on tour last year, dressed up like Janet in the "Rhythm Nation" video, and emulating the militaristic dances, reminded me of how groundbreaking Janet was when she made that video nearly 20 years ago.

Watching Ciara freestyle in the mirror in her "1, 2 Step" video reminded me that Janet's 1987 "Pleasure Principle" was that much better.

And every time I see Britney on stage wearing the cordless microphone headset that Janet popularized in her "Control" video, I want to run up on the stage and snatch it off of her head. She's not using it anyway...

Janet's written the hip hop pop blueprint. She just needs to reclaim it. I'm crossing my fingers that she's gonna do it.

I bash people on the internet because even though I'm 58 years old, boob jokes are still funny. Get over it Amanda D-cup.

Janet is hot and no one, I mean NO ONE, can do it better than she can. The woman is a Legend!! And for all the haters on here, won't you go do yourself a favor and jump off a building!

Pump her boo, pump her!!! Janet I can't get enough of your new single, Feedback. I am loving the song and the video is outstanding. Can't wait for the cd to drop. Just let the haters hate on you and do your thing. 2008 belongs to Janet Jackson....

This just proves that Janet is like expensive FINE WINE. Just gets better with time. All the so-called performers have a long way before they can catch up to her. She has over twenty years at it and still going strong. Wonder what Ciara and Beyonce will be doing in Twenty years. Janet is my hero. You go girl, please continue to give us more each year.

You, the author, should be ashamed of yourself for making fun of Britney. How can you make fun of someone who is going through so many terrible things? Would you like it if someone makes fun of you while going through divorce, custody battles, dealing with bi-polar disorder, etc?

Lame.

Great article, and oh so true. Janet popularized the group dance...and deserves credit for that. I rememember being mesmerized by pleasure principles when it premiered on MTV...back when they actually played music...and coming to school the next day to discuss Janet's straight hair. Ciara is probably the biggest copycat, because she has stolen Janet's dance style. I watched the Feedback video, and I really like it, and I wish her the best...I mean, if Mariah Carey can do it, then Janet can.

i agree with the article 100%. janet is unreplacable. she's an icon every female singer wants to be. no one can do what she has done and is still doing in the music industry.

yawn

Instead of wasting the last year looking for the wig and outfit she wore in the Busta Rhymes video, why not spend that time learning how to sing? or coming up with something she hasn't done over and over and over...again

Her body looks good, but she's getting that creepy I-had-too-much-plastic surgery, look all the Jacksons get as they get older.

YOU ROCK JANET!!!

I liked this article because it's so true that she set the path for all the "Janet wannabes" out there today. However, I wasn't to crazy about the video as much as I love her. She didn't look like she was enjoying herself. I think the second 1/2 of the vid was way better than the 1st 1/2. But good luck to her.

I feel music must capt people's attitudes and ways of thinking, acting and their wishes, be connected to them yet creating a personal style. Big star as Janet Jackson can reconnect to those uptoday attitudes and mix them with her way of feeling and express new music. Album could be named "reconnection"

in my heart, Janet never left!...her fans grew up, and the younger generation were forced to listen to Ciara, Rhianna, Etc.ana!!!...20 Y.O. didn't have a concert promotion tour like i had hoped!!! She gained weight for a movie role!...lost it, still looks "amazing!"...with all this buzz for "FeedBack" and "Discipline" coming out, and Beyonce is off the charts now, maybe Miss Janet (if your nasty!) can be re-discovered by a whole new generation!!!..."AGAIN!" as she well deserves!

LOVED THE SONG
THE VIDEO MADE MY ARM HAIRS "STAND UP!" (YOU GO GIRL!)

I love Janet, I really do! Seeing the level of talent that she has has shown I have to say that this video & Track are a bit disappointing. The song sounds like it should be the track that follows Britney - Gimme More. The video is also lacking. The contributors of this song and video are really showing a lack of how to get the best out of a great talent like miss J.

Hey Bylli Crayone if you go to LIMEWIRE they have the remixes there already and let me tell. IT'S HOT!!

I think Janet is the bomb, no matter what people say, she's bad and she know's it. I hope all the best for her, she deserves it.
You go Janet!!!

Billboard names Powter One-Hit Wonder of Decade

AP
Mon Dec 7, 2009 6:44am PST

AP - As far as one-hit wonders go, Daniel Powter is king of them all — for this decade, at least. Powter, whose hit "Bad Day" reigned on top of the Billboard pop charts for five weeks in 2006, was named as the de… More »
