Drake's 'Best' Video Is Kanye's Worst

Posted Thu Jul 2, 2009 12:43am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training
On the video front, I've been giving Kanye props since "Through The Wire." I thought it was incredibly dope how he told the story of his near fatal car accident through video footage and photos of his recovery.

He did it again with the video for "All Falls Down" featuring ageless beauty Stacey Dash as he rapped about being shallow and navigated through the video without ever really being on camera.

When I got to the third version of "Jesus Walks," the one that has a modern day Jesus wearing a crown of thorns, sandals and holy tunic, I stood up at my computer and applauded.

I have several more to add to the list--"Flashing Lights," John Legend's "Ordinary People," and my favorite "Touch The Sky."

Though Kanye's ego bothers me, he is really good at what he does.

I just have one question, though: Why would Kanye give Drake such a horrible video for "Best I Ever Had"? (See Craig Rosen's The New Now blog on Drake.)

Consider this: Lil' Wayne, Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem, among others, have gone on record to give Drake props. Even without a record deal "Best I Ever Had" has warranted major radio support and the song achieves this by uplifting a woman.

Let me say this again, slowly--"u-p-l-i-f-t-i-n-g--a--w-o-m-a-n."

You know the song with the lyric, "...with no make up on, that's when you're the prettiest, I hope that you don't take this wrong"?

Kanye did not have to do a storybook treatment that may have been perceived as corny. But why would he take that song and make it worse than every other gratuitous rap video?

In the clip, coach Drake's preps his all girl basketball team of baby-oiled video vixens who nearly bounce out of their tank tops and are eager to put on their short shorts just as long as Drake tells them they are the best.

What is the point? When the girls go head up against some real ball players they loose miserably. In the end Drake just looks like a short-sighted perv.

Now if Kanye wanted to hold on to this treatment and release it as the "The New Workout Plan Part 2," I'd be fine with it. That would actually make sense.

But please tell me this is not the real Drake video. Drake's set up has been too good. He deserves to come better than this.

WOW!! That was a great video for a completely different song.
That totally changed the meaning of that song for me, I originally took it as a genuine heartfelt ditty to that special someone, apparently the lyrics are just pillow talk to get the ENTIRE basketball team in bed. Still a great beat though.

I hated this video. It was so so so so stupid. But I guess its meant for the fellas.

I so surprised when I saw this video. No creativity acting terrible. It would have been better if he would have stayed in the realm of the rap video. Chicks-Alcohol-Fast car

4. NICK -
This is worse than your typical rap video! This song is about how special the woman is to his life....so why are we seeing nothing but breasts and butts on here?!?! I totally agree....though I like the song...this is one HORRIBLE video!

5. Yodidity09 -

This is the WORST Video ever!!!!! It has nothing to do w/ the song. It's horribly sexist and I thought this song was supposed to be uplifting women. This is by far worse than any other rap video I've seen; at least rappers don't hide behind seemingly sweet lyrics. I'm terribly disappointed seeing as how I love the song and Kanye's other videos. I think everyone should Demand A New Video!!!!!

For those on the outside looking in, this video looks like kanye dropped the ball, but the marketing plan is great because the song is for the females and he now just got the males with the video. What a marketing plan...

i saw the video first, and as im reading this article i thought, "this was supposed to be sweet and not pervy?"
this is eye-opening.

14. Kendall -
I completely agree. What the hell did the video have to do with anything?

15. Rene -
man there was some fine ass women in that video...it didnt fit the song and it could and should have been more romantic and love story-type video, but i aint mad at all, cause i can and will watch that video everytime its on...them ladies were off the hook....Im thirsty for some milk all of a sudden....

kanye, just in the current mode of hatin...it's hard to see anotha coming out that personifies one's own words.......there's room for more than one.....

17. Yauna -
Now i no Kanye can come up wit sumthin better than this. He is making Drake look like a damn fool. This video is a big hot mess sitting on another big hot mess

18. CAMEKAL -
Are you serious!??!! The video is garbage and Kanye knew it was garbage when he made the treatment for the video. Drake (and the song) deserves a much better video than this!!!!!!! They need to start over and forget that this video was ever made!

19. CAMEKAL -
I think Kanye is jealous of Drake's success!!! and the video proves it.

20. Chikethia -
I was so looking forward for Drake to come out with a video to this song, but not that. I was totally lost cause the video didn't match the song at all. I think Kanye did it on purpose cuz he know Drake is the next best thing and might knock him out of his spot.
