Kanye King Of Pop Story A Hoax
I should have known that reports about Kanye West proclaiming to be the new King of Pop were false.
In one sense, I wished the stories were true. When I
heard the details in a morning show entertainment wrap up, I immediately began
writing the blog in my head. I called Kanye out of line, disrespectful to the Jackson legacy, and unqualified
for the King of Pop title.
But when I started researching the subject, it quickly became clear that it was a joke.
Kanye was accused of saying, "You know everyone loves and respects Michael, but times change. It's so sad to see Michael gone, but it makes a path for a new King of Pop, and I'm willing to take that on."
Kanye has said that he wanted to be like Elvis, so these statements were believable. "First there was Elvis, then there was Michael," the fake quote continued. "Now in the 21st century it's Kanye's time to rule. I have nothing but respect for Michael, but someone needs to pick up where he left off, and there's nobody better than me to do that."
Before I blogged about it, I searched around for the source
of the story. I noticed that none of the major news outlets had covered it.
Finally, I came across a few blogs referencing the source as ScrapeTV.com. One
mentioned that the interview was fake.
I deduced that the story was a hoax when I went to the ScrapeTV.com website and saw the following story in the top spot: Study Finds Silver Bullets Largely Ineffective Against Werewolves.
There were also Stephon Marbury and Michael Vick articles with interesting angles.
Looks like ScrapeTV.com got their 2010 April Fool's joke in early. Bravo. Kanye is off the hook.
