Busta Rhymes Busts A New Move

Posted Wed Apr 30, 2008 12:04pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Busta Rhymes makes the best hip-hop party record, no competition. When I'm at a club and "Whoo-Hah," "Pass The Courvoisier" or "Touch It" comes on, it gets crazy. Even if you can't dance, you want to get on the floor.

I am content with Busta making these songs for the rest of his career. He's that good at it.

Since this has been Busta's approach for nearly 20 years, I was completely shocked when I heard "We Made It" with Linkin Park. There are a lot of curve balls here: It's a rock track, uses a slower tempo and is inspirational. It's not what I was expecting.

Actually, it reminds me of Eminem's "Lose Yourself." Like "Lose Yourself," it feels like it could work well on a movie soundtrack. I give Busta props for taking the artistic risk and switching up his game.

What's most interesting is the timing. Recently, Busta appeared to be on his typical course. The tentative album titles floating around were the usual hip-hop fare--Before Hell Freezes Over and Back To My Bullsh*t. But with the new direction of "We Made It," comes a new album title, I'm Blessed.

When listening to the "We Made It"'s introspective lyrics that celebrate overcoming adversities, I have to wonder about Busta's motivation. He's been through a lot over the last couple years. The murder of his former bodyguard Israel Ramirez in 2006 while on the set of the "Touch It (Remix)" video shoot and various troubles with drunk driving and assault charges must have had an impact on "We Made It" and the I'm Blessed album title.

Let's see what else he has to say on the album and if his fanbase is open minded enough to embrace this new sound. I get the impression that the I'm Blessed is going to feature a lot of his signature style, so I'm not expecting a complete departure.

His last two albums, 2006's The Big Bang Theory and 2002's It Ain't Safe No More, each only achieved gold sales status. Especially in these days of declining record sales, 500,000 albums sold is not enough to keep a major label record deal.

It is a good time for Busta to try a new approach, and he did it the smart way. Teaming up with Linkin Park was a good move, and the song is solid, even though it's not a party record. Plus, I'm always good for a message. Hip-hop could use one.

How is this combo unexpected? Linkin Park and Jay-Z did Collision Course years ago! Jay-Z has been singing the praises of Mike Shinoda ever since! What about Fort Minor? Shinoda put them on...what about the song with he did with X-Ecutioner...that was in 2001. This is nothing new here people. Linking Park rocks and they will always be an asset to anyone on collaborations.

Linkin Park sounds like a boy band in this song.

Mediocre at best.

I love how they call this a new sound? Rap and rock together? No way! that has never been done before.. unless you remember Run DMC and Aerosmith, Public Enemy and Anthrax or the entire Judgement Day Soundtrack... yeah, no one has ever done this before.

I am however glad to see that Busta is at least aware that RAP IS DYING and looking for a new outlet.

I love the song. If you really listen to the lyrics you would love it to. We all can't say we made it, but once you do make it. BUMP THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THE SONG WILL PUMP YOU UP!!!

Very nice track. I'm glad to see LP finally get some of their old mojo back after the abomination that was Minutes to Midnight. It's also good to see Busta going introspective and reflecting on the last couple of years. Chester is a great vocalist but this song showcases what he's good for, adding in vocals and maybe a verse. Mike shows his true form again and its good to see him taking the reins after he just sat back and let Chester do everything in MtM. Hope to see more in the future

Definately one of my favorite songs. I've always been a HUGE Linkin Park fan and I really like Busta so I was really excited to hear this song. It's amazing!!!!! And super powerful!!

This is an interesting song, to say the least. I'm a huge fan of rap music and seeing as how LP is the only rock group that I can actually say that i really like, this song is a hit to me. Alot of people say that this song sux cuz Busta "sold out" or cuz LP "should stick to their on genre." but times and music change. The did a good job on collision course and hopefully we will some other rappers follow suit with collabs.

Why do y'all like this song did you listen to the lyrics? We've all accomplished the same things they just make more money. What'd they do that's so special? Did they fight off cancer or something? How'd they make it, your still buying their records? One of my friends can still sell a house in this market maybe she should write a rap song. I expect y'all to buy it and say its good too. Because she's made it.

Love it, this is awsome!!

Super lame... chorus is seriously struglin, too many syllables for the beat and not syncopated enough
we made it even though we had outr backs against the wall...

riduculous 5th grade crap.

Really nothing special about it. I think music in America is going down hill, that's why all these musicians are looking to Europe for new ideas.

Problem is, Europe still does everything better.

busta and linkin park who would have known and i love it but can we get a ep with more songs of both of you all. rock and busta i waiting on him to take that step with that unique and distictive voice he has, busta was made for rock n roll so lets make it happen

linkin park is EVERYTHING that is wrong with music today....can we say "limp bizkit: take two"? these douchebags have been suckling at the teet of MTV so long, their lips are chapped....all this "cookie cutter crap rock" makes me want to vomit......busta, for the love of CHRIST, distance yourself as much as possible from these clowns. i dont even LIKE rap, but busta seems to ACTUALLY be different than these other "rappers"......nobody thinks for themselves anymore when it comes to original sounding music.....all these new "rappers" sound the same. and here's the truth: just because you're the nephew or kid of some so-called "rap icon", this DOES NOT MEAN you have the same talents....good rap died in the 90's (and made a COUPLE appearances in the early 2000's).....if you dont like what i have to say, boo hoo, go bust out a freestyle about......

139. KaplanM -
Eh. It's nothing special. Sounds like old LP stuff with a thug rapper adding a line here and there. Yawn.

Crap. Just plain crap...
