Whitney Houston's 'I Look To You' Video Trumps GMA Performance

Posted Mon Sep 14, 2009 3:40am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Clive Davis is a genius.

I know that no one has ever doubted his brilliance, but the marketing and set up for Whitney Houston's "I Look To You" illustrates my point.

The video for the title track and first single is exactly what I'd expect from an artist of her caliber. She is wearing a cream, elegant evening gown. She's alone, sitting in an empty white room. Her hair and makeup are flawless.

When she looks up to sing to the singular strobe light beaming down on her, she gives the impression that God is the YOU she is referring to in the song. It is God she is thanking for giving her the strength to overcome her past dramas.

Fifteen seconds into this video, I am reminded of "The Greatest Love Of All"-Whitney. And even though I was quick to point out the flaws with her Good Morning America performance, that critique became irrelevant as I watched this video.

The "I Look To You" video captures Whitney at a high point. She sounds great, and is singing a message that--while is specific to her own experiences-is universal and fitting, considering these rough economic times.

Now, here's why Clive Davis is worth millions.

He figured out a way to make Whitney win during a time when record sales are low.

Even though first week record sales are important, Clive was smart enough to make sure that Arista Records did not exhaust all of its Whitney promotional tools before the release of the album.

Back in February, Clive had Whitney perform at his annual pre-Grammy party. This got people buzzing, anticipating her return. Most importantly, it made people realize that a new Whitney record was really going to happen.

Clive kept under wraps footage of Whitney's performance at his party. Any clip I heard was of such poor quality that I could not judge for myself. I had to feed off of the hype.

In July, Clive hosted exclusive album listening parties for which Whitney made appearances. At the Beverly Hills event that I attended, he told us that the 9 songs he played were not mastered, but just a preview of what we should expect.

Based on the reaction of the folks at the Beverly Hills session, people were impressed and genuinely enthusiastic about the songs they heard.

Over the next month-in-a-half, songs from the album leaked more frequently, heightening curiosity.

Then, the album dropped.

The next day, Whitney bore her heart and soul to Good Morning America viewers. Her performance did not live up to my expectations. I felt like I had been let down.

Clive let the ‘net pick apart Whitney's live performance for a week.

Still, Whitney debuted at No. 1, impressively selling more than 300,000 copies in the US.

The very next day, Clive let Oprah premiere Whitney's regal and polished "I Look To You" video.

The timing was perfect. The video trumps the Good Morning America performance. We can say whatever we want to say about the Good Morning America performance. But at the end of the day, a bad performance from an artist you love does not mean much at all. It is an isolated event.

What you hold onto, sing along to, envision in your head is the version you hear and see repeatedly. It's the one on your CD, computer, radio or television.

I've already forgotten about the Good Morning America performance.

The Whitney in the "I Look To You" video is the Whitney I want.

But Clive isn't done.

This week Oprah is going to bring it home. She has devoted Monday AND Tuesday to Whitney.

Click here to see a clip from the Oprah interview.

I hear that a video for the Alicia Keys' penned "Million Dollar Bill" is due out at the end of the Oprah week.

The set up and roll out for the promotion of "I Look To You" is incredible.

If it weren't for the release of Jay-Z's highly anticipated "BP3," Whitney would have easily held down another week at No. 1.

I wonder what they are planning for the holiday shopping season.

This is what I call a comeback.

I thought it was nice. She needs to work out some of her mistakes in her live preformances and take care of her voice for the better.

Someone needs to teach Kanye West some manners, it is obvious his family never did. He does not deserve success or support. His animalistic behavior at the VMA's was disgusting! His apology, like him, IS WEAK! Does he have a mirror? he looked like a clown last night!

Kanye is a racist!

Life is about getting up every time you go down. Whitney is up again.......We know she can sing........I'm glad she is looking up!!!!!!

Whitney is a legend. No matter what her voice sounds like now, or how its changed can take that fact away. Whitney Houston wrote the book on what is now todays pop/r&b diva. Her voice is the greatest.

Animal Farm are you kidding me? were you raised with animals. What Kanye did was very wrong and as a black american this is not what being black is. I wish people would see people as "people" and not as a color or race. It's 2009 almost 2010 and this should not even be the topic. It's ridiculous!! He was wrong whether he did it to a white or black person, male or female and that's the issue here. PERIOD!

Pomp and circumstance aside, Clive's "relative" genuis here . . .I'm not getting it. Music videos are an art form in themselves -- anyone can be made to look good. I think Whitney sounds a tad better than Dionne Warwick and really, c'mon, that's not saying a whole lot. Whitney will always hold a special place in music, she was a diva in the day and untouchable. I thought she was amazing and the total package. Right now she "looks to you," the music buying public and is relying/riding on brand loyalty. Hopefully though, she build on the energy put into this project and bring great music that's still somewhere inside her w/out the smoke and mirrors marketing. Wishing her well.

Really Nice to have Whitney back. She is on the road to making it. Life does throw challenges but somehow it is possible to find inner strength to continue your journey.

Billy I read your article before I saw the preview of her performance on Oprah and didn't believe you. Now I totally agree. It is very clever advertising. A few years ago Jamie Foxx said Whitney was at his house and sang perfectly. I didn't believe him, but now I do.

While on GMA she plugged her Oprah performance and Whitney basically sang back up to her own music.

All of her previous bad performances was a setup. The advertisement was planned by Clive and Whitney and Oprah's in on it too.

Good job to all. If it wasn't for Billy I would have fell for it.

i mean, i feel tha song whitney is siging, tha words are defintly powerful, but her voice, is not that crystal clear, bird chirpin, powerhouse voice, she once had. in fact it made tha song very boreing, even if she couldnt hit tha notes she could of at least tempted.

You are a good man Mr. Billy Johnson Jr. I like a person who can see the positive out of the negative in the overall scheme of things. Bottom line, as you put it, its what we see and hear over and over that has staying power. As I read the blogs re: GMA review I was angry people could be so mean and I posted a few of my own in response. Now 2 weeks later after reading how many fans are rooting for Whitney, then reading this article today, it's like the icing on the cake. Maybe it is genius marketing tactics like you say.

There is a such thing as grace and mercy and grace is sufficient to meet every person's need and circumstance. To each one-no exceptions-sufficient grace is given to cover the multitude of our wrongdoings. The fact is, none of us is good enough. If receiving grace depended on our being good, then it would cease to be grace and instead would be God's reward for good behavior. And all of us would fail. Whatever road Whitney chose to go down right or wrong she has been save by grace, through faith. We all have a story to tell good, bad or indifferent it is what we chose to do with our experiences that makes us who we are. Whitney was the prodigal son/daughter who found her way back home Whitney let go and let God. And with that song by Whitney " I Look To You" she has come out spiritually swinging, always be blessed and encouraged with much spiritual love from my faith in prayer.

Wonderful. Welcome home, Whitney.

It would have been great if Taylor Swift had been accompanied by the UFC's Brock Lesnar and Kanye had come running on the stage. Okay, I'd even pay to see Queen Latifah lay a smackdown on his candy arse. And yes, I'm black, but I really wish he'd call himself cablinasian.

17. Gypsyjamboree -
Wow, she's still beautiful, but her singing technique has gone WAY downhill. The contrast between her latest video and the one for The Greatest Love of All is just heartbreaking. I hope she is strong enough to get vocal choaching.

18. Andre -
Kanye is an A**hole, but as far as being a racist his girlfriend, Amber Rose, who was with him last night is with and blond. But to the point I love Whitney and her new video.

19. Inthegrove -
Swine flu will end it all so doesn't matter my loves! Peace!

20. democratsalltheway30 -
Whitney Houston is amazing. At the end of all this, it comes down to that. Well-written, and captures exactly what I feel.
