Usher, Has Chris Brown Taken Your Spot?

Posted Thu May 1, 2008 10:52pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Chris Brown will tell you that Michael Jackson is his biggest influence, but it was Usher who came to mind when you first saw the then 16-year-old budding R&B, hip-hop, pop star pop-locking across a high school gymnasium in his debut video "Run It!" nearly three years ago.

Usher's recurrent singles from his 9 times platinum Confessions album were still lingering on the charts as Chris entered the game capturing the attention of Usher fans and even connecting with tweens who couldn't yet relate to Usher's need to confess his infidelities and to painfully "let it burn."

As Usher took a break from music and instead garnered limelight for his rumored romance with his stylist with whom he later confirmed in their marriage, Chris Brown took full advantage of not having any competition in the genre. He released two albums, his 2005 self-titled debut and 2007's Exclusive, and achieved platinum results during Usher's hiatus.

Eight back to back hit singles from Chris Brown made you wonder exactly where Usher would fit in upon his return. If you saw Chris's performance and high tech stage show last year as he headlined his own tour, you would have no problem accepting the proclamation that he is the future of R&B as a leading urban glossy declared shortly after his debut.

But now Usher is back. The seasoned performer turns 30 this October and is a new husband and father.  Can he pick up the momentum of where Confessions left off? Or should he be prepared for Chris Brown to do to his career what Ciara has done to Janet's?

Don't get excited just yet Chris.

The answer is in the Usher's comeback single "Love In The Club" which happens to be No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Even though Chris has three songs in the top 10, his collaboration with Jordin Sparks "No Air" is No. 3, his solo tracks "Forever" and "With You" are No. 9 and No. 10, Usher's cache should not be underestimated.

The anticipation of something new from Usher helped propel "Love In The Club" to the top of the download charts with great assists from a Young Jeezy feature and the incredible, slow grind Polow Da Don track. The video may not have resonated as much as Usher's "Yeah," or even Chris's "Wall To Wall," but guest appearances from Keri Hilson, Kanye West, and Jeezy, prove that Usher's reemergence was grand.

Though the "Love In The Club" video focused less on dance than a typical Usher video and the short dance sequence was not spectacular, it by no means signals any less energy from Usher.

At Yahoo! Music, Chris Brown is the second most searched for artist on the site and Usher is fourth. But I'm expecting the positions to swap as we get closer to May 27, the release date for Usher's fifth studio album Here I Stand.

It's my bet that Usher has no need to worry any time soon. But I do appreciate Mr. Brown for turning up the heat and forcing Usher to stay on top of his game.

I'm not sure if you all know that Usher was actually instrumental in helping Chris Brown determine what record label offer to accept. In an interview with Chris just before he released his debut, he told me that Usher called him unexpectantly one day while he was in the midst of a label bidding war. L.A. Reid, who heads Island Def Jam and signed Usher to his LA Face Records in the early '90s, asked Usher to call Chris basically as a personal reference.

While this surprise phone call was Chris's first time meeting Usher, he listened to Usher's advice that encouraged him to make his own decision. Chris's decision was to join the Jive family, also the home to Usher. Reid and his partner had sold LA Face to Jive's parent company years earlier.

Considering Usher and Chris's friendly history, maybe the two can successfully co-exist? Who says there can only be one R&B, hip-hop, pop male superstar?

I love Chris Brown. Usher has alot of good songs, and he has a nice voice, but chris brown's songs are songs that can relate to everyone. not every one wants to make love in a club, in case you didn't know. but we all know that we have to say goodbye, and wish that we had ladies/men coming at us from wall to wall.

Billy, this is a STUPID article! Get back at me when Chris Brown goes platinum in ONE WEEK like Usher did!!! Sorry, as much as little girls scream for Chris Brown, he still ain't had his "Thriller" moment... WHEN or IF that comes... THEN we can make comparisons... A couple of nice dance performances doesn't make you a great artist.

I'm 44 yrs on this planet...and I've seen the best of the best. I'm not sure why today's entertainers that actually have great vocals stoop, squat, slip and fall into the nasty stuff. It takes so much away from your skills/talent. MJ keeps his class and entertains us. Luther V. is responsible for babies all over the world...he still is! Chris don't fall for that trap! Usher...keep it real! PLEASE! Both of your vocals are scrumptious all on their own! You both have amazing, sexy vocal skills...stay away from the vulgar nasty! It closes some of the most important doors you'll ever have in your careers.

CHRIS BROWN IS THE BEST AT EVERYTHING GET IT BOY....

28. Taylor -
I Agree with some of yall others. You can't compare these two artists. they are on two different levels. If any thing I would say Usher is better, but Chris Brown just started. So soon as he keep up what he is doing, I shocked to say, but he will be better. Usher did have a lot of good hits. Chris brown is a lot younger, and he will be still singing while usher retired. So we have a lot to find out in the future.

29. major -
usher has every thing than chrisbrown

30. Lekia -
I think that they are equallly good artists. You cannnot comparethe two. Usher has been out longer and he started out just like Chris Brown did. Now look at him he is a househld name and everyone loves him. Chris Brown will be the same way. He is also a household name and will continue to be one just like Usher. Usher just has been in the game longer. What do you expect usher is 30 and Chris Brown is what 19. People do the math. Usher was bound to come out before Chris he older. And also music is changing everyday.

31. miz icy -
Chris Brown is a hot artist, but Usher is still doing his thang. Everyone has to remember that Usher is a rollmodel and other artists copy his moves and talent.

32. Lekia -
Now why do people want to compare Janet and Ciara. Janet was the stuff whaen she was younger but now we are looking for the next best thing and that is Ciara. Janet should just retire and enjoy the records that she has broken and live as one of the best entertainers of our life. Now janet needs to step aside and let Ciara show her how the young girls do it. Things have changed it is not how it was back then. New things are happening and new things are being done. So Janet was the best now something new and fresh is showing something new to this generation

33. jrt is beastly -
There really is no comparison. Usher has the better voice, but Chris Brown is the better dancer.....Chris Brown caters to the younger folks, while Usher makes more mature music than C.B. So to compare the two is a wasted argument, they both are great.....but whoever said that C.B. can sing better than Usher has to be mentally retarded....go listen to "can you handle it" by Usher, and tell me again whos the better singer.......

34. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
lol well i think they should make a duet. they r both good and talented...

35. IndiaH -
CHRIS BROWN IS MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!!! I LUV CHRIS BROWN. I LIKE USHER BUT CHRIS BROWN JUST TOOK THE SPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

36. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
These two artist are on two different levels but at the same time you can't always be on top. Sooner or later someone will come who is better than than the last, that's just human nature. Usher and Chris are both great performers. Usher has better vocals, but that's something that came with time and the same would be for Chris.

37. jasmine -
usher still rock a mean you're the man. Chris brown aint nothing

38. batmann -
I dont care what no one say usher is my favorite singer and hes the best in the game. So if chris brown want to be even close to ushers level, He needs to step his game up.

KENDRICK GRISBY

39. Jewlia -
chris is way better than usher chris is cutie, better singer, awsome,MAJOR HOTTIE

40. k33n_04 -
everyone knows usher is a r&b hiphop/pop superstar...but like the article said...who says there can't be more than one? like in the early-mid-late 1990's, with brian mcnight, ginuine, musiq, all of them were each others competition, and its not like the "rap game" is now.
ppl didn't shoot each other because someone can sing better than someone else, they just kept coming out with new and better music...i think that is what we need again. there has been just one person standing out or one person "on top" of the game for way too long, we NEED competition in music. if the competition dies down too much, all the music will be horrible...think about it.
but think about even further back in time to the 60's, 70's, and 80's, there has always been lots of competition, and i think chris brown is, and will continue to be ushers competition. when competition dies, so does music...
