Usher, Has Chris Brown Taken Your Spot?

Posted Thu May 1, 2008 10:52pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Chris Brown will tell you that Michael Jackson is his biggest influence, but it was Usher who came to mind when you first saw the then 16-year-old budding R&B, hip-hop, pop star pop-locking across a high school gymnasium in his debut video "Run It!" nearly three years ago.

Usher's recurrent singles from his 9 times platinum Confessions album were still lingering on the charts as Chris entered the game capturing the attention of Usher fans and even connecting with tweens who couldn't yet relate to Usher's need to confess his infidelities and to painfully "let it burn."

As Usher took a break from music and instead garnered limelight for his rumored romance with his stylist with whom he later confirmed in their marriage, Chris Brown took full advantage of not having any competition in the genre. He released two albums, his 2005 self-titled debut and 2007's Exclusive, and achieved platinum results during Usher's hiatus.

Eight back to back hit singles from Chris Brown made you wonder exactly where Usher would fit in upon his return. If you saw Chris's performance and high tech stage show last year as he headlined his own tour, you would have no problem accepting the proclamation that he is the future of R&B as a leading urban glossy declared shortly after his debut.

But now Usher is back. The seasoned performer turns 30 this October and is a new husband and father.  Can he pick up the momentum of where Confessions left off? Or should he be prepared for Chris Brown to do to his career what Ciara has done to Janet's?

Don't get excited just yet Chris.

The answer is in the Usher's comeback single "Love In The Club" which happens to be No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Even though Chris has three songs in the top 10, his collaboration with Jordin Sparks "No Air" is No. 3, his solo tracks "Forever" and "With You" are No. 9 and No. 10, Usher's cache should not be underestimated.

The anticipation of something new from Usher helped propel "Love In The Club" to the top of the download charts with great assists from a Young Jeezy feature and the incredible, slow grind Polow Da Don track. The video may not have resonated as much as Usher's "Yeah," or even Chris's "Wall To Wall," but guest appearances from Keri Hilson, Kanye West, and Jeezy, prove that Usher's reemergence was grand.

Though the "Love In The Club" video focused less on dance than a typical Usher video and the short dance sequence was not spectacular, it by no means signals any less energy from Usher.

At Yahoo! Music, Chris Brown is the second most searched for artist on the site and Usher is fourth. But I'm expecting the positions to swap as we get closer to May 27, the release date for Usher's fifth studio album Here I Stand.

It's my bet that Usher has no need to worry any time soon. But I do appreciate Mr. Brown for turning up the heat and forcing Usher to stay on top of his game.

I'm not sure if you all know that Usher was actually instrumental in helping Chris Brown determine what record label offer to accept. In an interview with Chris just before he released his debut, he told me that Usher called him unexpectantly one day while he was in the midst of a label bidding war. L.A. Reid, who heads Island Def Jam and signed Usher to his LA Face Records in the early '90s, asked Usher to call Chris basically as a personal reference.

While this surprise phone call was Chris's first time meeting Usher, he listened to Usher's advice that encouraged him to make his own decision. Chris's decision was to join the Jive family, also the home to Usher. Reid and his partner had sold LA Face to Jive's parent company years earlier.

Considering Usher and Chris's friendly history, maybe the two can successfully co-exist? Who says there can only be one R&B, hip-hop, pop male superstar?

Usher and Janet have paid their dues and have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone. They have paved the way for today's Chris Browns and Ciaras to enterain so I don't understand why people are comparing the maturer artists with the newer ones because there is no comparison in one form or another. Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holiday can also be added to this as well because JHud and Holiday are from two different generations where they also cannot be compared. JHud can be compared to Beyonce who I can say, has had more spotlight than any other female artists of today. It's time JHud to shine now as she has a much stronger voice then Beyonce even though I love them both.

Check out this bangin video @myspace/ohyestheydid.I love ushers music and he does have a large following, but he is not bringing it for his fans. When an artist grows so should his music. Usher has been on hiatus for a few years and all that’s happened in his life is Love In This Club. Chris brown is on top right now and unless usher brings it he will lose his crown. Check out this bangin video @myspace/ohyestheydid.

Brother Billy-

Come on man. What are you attempting to do? These guys are of two different generations. They can exist in the same male rnb game, as they currently do.

Stop being an instigator. It makes you look bad, and you are a much better writer than that.

Can these two really be compared? NO.
I'm sorry, but Chris Brown is too teeny-bopperish to me. I can't see him having the longevity that Usher has. Usher is still young, but he's mature which appeals to two different audiences. Chris is like soda pop & Usher is like a fine wine. Which would you rather have?

Chris Brown cannot be the king of R&B. Usher has a way bettter voice than him. There are many other R&B singers than Chris.

Both artist have their strengths, but I think that Usher comes out on top. They both are amazing performers, but Chris Brown is the better dancer. However Usher is by far the better singer. Chris Brown sounds like he's whining when he sings, and no thank you on that. I don't think you can really compare the two, Usher's last album as the article states went 9 times platinum, and Chris Brown has had how many top 10 singles of his current album and it is barely platinum. Also when was the last time he had a #1 song and that it was replaced by another one of his songs, like "Burn" and "Yeah".

Well I think the reason that Chris Brown success is coming full circle is because hes young, handsome, single, no kids, and fresh and new. Usher made a mistake by going on a extra long hiatus. He left for like three years. He made it easy for Chris Brown to take his thunder. Not only that... Usher married some old 40 year old (who already has 3 other kids) and had a baby. That put years on him to some fans. Or as someone else said "maturing". To his fans he's not attainable or creditalbe to has fellow brothers. He's like tied down and Chris Brown is fresh. He put years on him and thats not cute to his fans...even his mature fans. Yes I know he has to live his life. Well live it. But there are some consequences when your a star. Its .ike the fashion world they want the next best thing. Yeah your hit "in the club" is doing okay but I think, Usher, your gonna be the Tina to Chris' Beyonce. Take it like a man. Bow down.

Although I'm one of Usher's #1 fans who had the pleasure of meeting him a couple years back when he was in town for the Kentucky Derby I think that both men are talented in their own ways but, USHER is in a class all by himself! And no Chris can never take his spot.

Everyone has their own opinion when it comes Chris and Usher. They are both great performers, dancers, and singers. Usher is older therfore, more experienced. Chris will soon reach that catergory. Usher does have a more mature voice compared to Chris. Either way they are both successful in their own way and will continue to be successful in their own separate ways. They are different people and you can't compare!!

my bf and i already kinda predicted this. In a way Chris Brown will become the new Usher. Usher will be the next R. Kelly. Not literally of course, but in ranking. For a long time, R.Kelly was the king of R&B. But new generations r rolling around and prince's r becoming kings.
