Chris Brown Starts Community Labor, Releases Promo Videos

Posted Wed Sep 16, 2009 3:32pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Chris Brown usually isn't distracted when girls scream at him while he works. The cheers must egg him on. Those reactions encourage him to pop-lock harder, moonwalk cleaner, or even bust a back flip.

Chris knows that his adoring female fans want to see him perform his best.

But he seemed a bit awkward Wednesday when a lady's voice called out to him in the midst of his first day of community labor at the police horse stables in Richmond, Virginia.

While using a rake to dig up weeds, Chris nervously flinched when a woman yelled, interrupting him. He immediately turned to find the caller, and playfully tossed the rake from hand to hand.

Chris appeared unnerved as the news cameras continued to collect footage of him cleaning as armed police supervised. This is a different type of paparazzi for the 20-year-old pop star already accustomed to performing for thousands of concertgoers.

During his interview with Larry King a few weeks ago, Chris said he did not object to his 180 community labor sentence. He described himself as a hard worker, who was up to the challenge. But he thought that his services could be of better use to the city. He suggested talking to troubled teens.

I laughed as I watched the clips. I laughed because I got to see Chris Brown being reprimanded for his assault on his former girlfriend Rihanna.

But in all honesty, I didn't just laugh because of the celebrity factor. If I saw someone I knew doing community labor as a means to repay the city for an infraction, I would also find it funny.

Depending on the individual, this public community labor can absolutely be considered a form of humiliation. But I think it is a good idea.

It can't be any less embarrassing than it was for Rihanna to go in public after the photo of her bruised face was circulated over the internet.

I think this aspect of Chris' sentence is one that he will not want to do again. It will make him think twice before he repeats the offense.

Still, Chris has to spend five years on probation, attend a 52-week course on domestic abuse, and stay away from Rihanna for the entirety of the sentence.

Hopefully, Chris' experience will deter other domestic violence perpetrators from committing violence crimes.

Ironically, one of the men shown pacing the field is wearing a t-shirt that reads, Stop Teen Violence.

Aside from Chris' legal woes, he has been easing back into his music career.

Chris makes a cameo in the new Keri Hilson video "Slow Dance," and teams with hot newcomer Ester Dean for their explosive collab, "Drop it Low."

The trailer for Chris' new movie, Takers, hit the internet this week. The heist flick also co-stars Matt Dillon, Idris Elba, and T.I.

What they need to do is not allow him to stand around as he was trying to look pretty. I've seen five year olds do better jobs.

If you never been to court, jail or did community service then don't say what is best for someone else. Remember, Judge not ant thou shall be judge !!

I swear..the people in this world today are so sensitive and judgmental. People do stupid things all the time. Everything is a controversy these days. Lighten up. I still support Chris Brown. And I love his music. And my head feels fine bamboo bernie.

CYNTHIA,NO ONE IS SPEAKING ON HEAR.INSTEAD OF THE HARSH STATEMENT,JUST STICK TO THE CONVERSATION PLEASE AND YOU HAVE A BLESS DAY

What are these comments about "everyone makes mistakes"? He didn't make a mistake. He made a decision. A mistake is forgetting to turn off the iron. A mistake is dialing the wrong telephone number. You don't accidently beat up a woman. You do that only if you are a complete and total [profane]. And no, not everyone does that. He is a piece of crap.

you know she is not denfensless as all of you thing. she may have started it. but ya it was wrong of him.but he is doing his time. and you know people do make decision but you can still make a mistake.there is twosides to every story, and were is she, I bet she is laughing about it. you will never know.

One day the real story will come out and most of you trying to pass judgement is going to feel like a fool. Chris got played and so he has to dancing to the music. I am sorry but if I had a son he would never have taken the fall in the name of love.

18. Gordon -
I totally disagree with people saying that he doesn't deserve this. It doesn't matter what she did. A MAN should never hit a woman. I would have no tolerance on a person if he were to abuse my mother or sisters.

that's the damn problem folks give people too many breaks thats why people do what they do. had it been me or you they would have looked our azz up!!! but he had a million dollar lawyer so chris should be glad he didn't get jail time!!! I read that he would act up real bad at his mothers house breaking china etc. she should have got him help as a young boy!!! the problem with these young men is that they don't have no direction no daddy. And I hope Chris Brown got his wake up call. If he messes up again you best believe he will be in jail and especially he of all people, a black man should know that there are different strokes for different folks. After this I hope he lay low and move on!!!

-Thank you!!

Here's hoping he gets the help he so obviously, desperately needs. A violent abuser is a violent abuser, no matter his or her age, race or status. He has no self-control and who knows when he'll next snap or how far he'll go.
