Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Is A Best Pre-Seller

Posted Fri Oct 2, 2009 4:56pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Pre-sale tickets for Michael Jackson's posthumous theatrical release "This Is It" have earned a new title for the late King Of Pop. A spokesperson for Fandango.com, a leading online movie ticket retailer, has said at this point in time, "This Is It" is the "best-selling concert film of all time."

Combined, Fandango.com and MovieTickets.com report sold-out presales tickets for nearly 1000 showings of the film which opens Wednesday, October 28.

"This is astonishing," a spokesperson for Fandango.com said. "We were expecting a huge rush of ticket sales within the first few days. They are still going strong as of Thursday, fives days in. It shows no sign of abating."

Joel Cohen, executive vice president and general manager of MovieTickets.com, also said the pre-sale tickets exceeded his already high expectations for the film.

"Michael Jackson is such an iconic figure, with a fan base that transcends even some of the most bankable stars in Hollywood," Cohen said. "We expected there to be a large demand for tickets for an ‘event' film like this one, but MovieTickets.com has never seen such a high volume of sellouts this far in advance for any movie."

"This Is It" ticket sales outsold "Hannah Montana" pre-sales by a "factor of 3 to 1" when compared to the "same point in the film's film cycle." Both had limited theatrical releases. "This Is It" will be in theatres for two weeks. "Hannah Montana 3D" was in theatres for one week.

"This Is It" is a documentary style movie chronicling Michael Jackson's rehearsals for his reported final tour. Jackson died on June 25, less than three weeks before the planned July 13 opening date at the o2 arena.

Hard to believe that no one expected this type of sellout to happen. We are talking about the one man that can make a grown man cry just by being on stage. MJ "The King of Pop" will live on forever.

Rider, no one would probably "hear a peep" from you. So don't hate...congratulate!!! hahahahahaha.

Anyways, I'm not sure why some people are so "astonished" that MJ's doc/movie sold out or breaking records. IT'S MICHAEL JACKSON!!! He was smashing and setting records when he was alive and still is! Duuuuuhhhhh!!!

I love, and will always love Micheal Jackson. I wish he was alive to see how much he truly meant to us. I wish we all had stood up for him when he was alive. I believe he would be with us today if we had.

In this world of "gotta have it, and I gotta have it NOW" mentality, I would just rather wait to rent the DVD in a few months or so. Yes, I can wait.

Can anyone say," Haters"? To the negative post, that is.

With a 2 week run, DVD sales will be enormous and will sell for years to come.

"He had a couple monster hit albums and that was it."

Considering that one of those monster albums is the best selling album of all time, I'd say he's definitely worthy of the title 'King of Pop'. Michael Jackson had one of the most memorable careers in history. He revolutionized how music was delivered to people, by turning music videos into an art form and a promotional tool. Not to mention that he was a great singer and dancer. What more do you want out of him, Marco?

Rider , did u forget the 50 sold out concert dates ? That happened while he was alive ,and that's hardly what you'd call a peep! And as for MJ being a mediocre talent that's laughable. I grew up with the J5 and Michael and I happen to think it is (not was) very real.

marco,

your statement is just as garbage as the garbage that comes out of your *$$!!! And fyi, Elizabeth Taylor was the one who coined MJ the "King Of Pop" and MJ definitely backed up that title. You're one of very few idiots that think otherwise. "Mediocre talent"??!! That would be Justin Timberlake dude. hahahahahha. MJ's stellar and LEGENDARY career speaks for itself. Sorry you missed it...hater.

Marco, if you knew anything....you know that Elizabeth Taylor was the one who started calling MJ the King of Pop! He never-ever self-entitled himself to be anything or anyone...He just was...so face it-Don't Hate!

18. aretha -
BTW Rider, learn how to spell and type!!!! Are you talking barley (the food) or barely, meaning hardly-ever?

I have my tickets and will love MJ til the day I die. Those of you with negative things to say have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about and obviously have no clue about Michael. Maybe you should do some reseach even look him up on Wikipedia and you will be amazed at the man and the accomplishments of MJ. He was a major humanitarian - one who not only put out the message to heal the world and help the people but did more greatness for the planet than anyone I can think of. Know what you are talking about before making statements that are clearly not true. MJ is my hero.

macro,
why don't u try doing something with ur life. How on this earth can u evr call MJ's talent mediocre??? U mean to say that people were soo dumb to buy his thriller album that sold millions of copies? Wher was MTV that u claim MJ watched the moonwalk. MJ made MTV! God!!!! Do ur research!! Why don't u try having a "couple monster hit" and we'll see if its just "all". Don't hate....PUH-LEAZ GET REAL. The sooner u realize that he had real talent the better it is for u. Ur just hating on him...
