Kanye's Most Extreme Moments

Posted Sat Sep 13, 2008 9:26am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

In these days of the popularity of tabloid journalism it's quite easy for a celebrity like Kanye West to have his art overshadowed by the antics of his personal life. Since the release of his 2004 debut, The College Dropout, the Chicago-bred rapper has been fortunate to have enough good music in the marketplace to remain relevant based on his talent.

But to some, he is best known for his incidences, like Thursday's widely covered run-in with the paparazzi while at the Los Angeles International Airport en route to Hawaii or one of his numerous outbursts at award shows.

Below are 10 of Kanye's Most Extreme Moments. The list includes moments of his extreme brilliance, uncontrollable utterances (good and bad) and even a horrible tragedy that is clearly the wackest thing that could happen to anyone. The latter is proof that he isn't always the perpetrator but sometimes a victim himself.

10) Jesus Literally Walks With Kanye
Kanye made three videos for his heralded track "Jesus Walks." Version 3 is the most shocking. The video offers a literal interpretation of the song. It's hilarious watching Kanye walking down the street accompanied by Jesus, who is wearing a toga, sandals and the crown of thorns. I don't think anyone was expecting this or any other rapper would produce something this compelling.

9) Kanye Finally Wins
After making a spectacle of himself at the American Music Awards when he lost the Best New Artist honor to country singer Gretchen Wilson, many wondered how Kanye would respond at the 2005 Grammys. Fortunately, his debut The College Dropout received two trophies that night, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. When Kanye took the stage to receive the Best Rap Album honor he said, "A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn't win anything ... I guess we'll never know." And we didn't want to know.

8) Bonnaroo Boos Kanye
The thousands of fans who turned out for Kanye's early morning performance on June 15 at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee were livid that the show started 2 hours late. The crowd booed and threw bottles, and even dissed Kanye the following days during sets for Zach Rogue and Robert Randolph. Kanye posted a blog on his website, saying that the delay wasn't his fault. He blamed the festival for not being able to accommodate his set up requirements and a Pearl Jam show that exceeded its time by an hour.

 7) Kanye Gets Justice
Obviously determined to upstage any of his previous award show tantrums, Kanye West bum rushed the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen when he did not receive the Best Video award for his video "Touch The Sky." Kanye rudely interrupted Justice vs. Simian's acceptance speech for their video "We Are Your Friends." In Kanye's clip, he took on an Evil Knievel like persona, kissed Pamela Anderson and had a verbal showdown with Nia Long. Even though Kanye admitted that he had never seen the Justice vs. Simian video, he didn't need to. Actually, it is pretty bad.

6) Kanye Gets Beat By A Redneck Woman
Poor Gretchen Wilson's big American Music Award win for Best New Artist is overshadowed by Kanye's protest for losing. Not only did Kanye storm out of the event, he lashed out backstage. "I feel I was definitely robbed," Kanye told the Associated Press. "I was the best new artist this year." He later apologized to Gretchen.

5) Kanye Curses The VMAs
Britney Spear's sloppy opening performance for MTV's 2007 VMA awards may be the most memorable event from the night, but Kanye's backstage tirade is just as unforgettable. Not only did Kanye not win any of the five VMA awards for which he was nominated, he was also relegated to performing in a hotel suite, as opposed to the main stage. When he saw Justin Timberlake take the main stage, Kanye went ballistic, cursing the cable network and vowing to never return. Fortunately the ordeal was caught on tape.

4) Kanye's 9/11 Airport Fiasco
It seems a bit unreal that Kanye--of all people--would now have on record his own airport troubles on 9/11. On Thursday, Kanye got into a scuffle with a paparazzi that resulted in an arrest. After Kanye's road manager told the photographer to stop photographing him to no avail, Kanye and his road manager commandeered the photographer's equipment and smashed it dead. Kanye and his accomplice were arrested and faced charges of felony vandalism.

3) Kanye Looks Out For Hurricane Katrina Victims
Watching the news coverage of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina made a huge impact on Kanye. While taping a live Concert For Hurricane Relief telethon, Kanye ignored the teleprompter and offered impromptu and controversial words. He complained that the victims were not receiving adequate help and were portrayed on the news as looters. He concluded his remarks with an accusation that shocked viewers: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

2) Kanye Escapes Death
Before Kanye launched his solo career, he experienced a near fatal car accident. He had fallen asleep while driving after leaving an extended recording session. The accident left him badly injured, but with his mouth stilled wired shut, he documented the tragedy in song. The positive reaction to "Through The Wire" finally earned him a record deal with Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records.

1) Kanye Loses The Girl Who Knew Him Best
Few hip-hop artists show their mothers the type of affection Kanye bestowed upon Dr. Donda West. Though Kanye's off-the-cuff attitude has gotten him dismissed as selfish by many, fans and naysayers alike extended their sincere condolences when they learned that his mother had died suddenly on November 10, 2007. Because Dr. West passed away after undergoing plastic surgery there was speculation regarding the cause of death which was later determined to be heart disease. In addition to co-managing her son, Dr. West had also worked as a professor and former chairwoman of the Chicago State University English department.

I don't get the "Wackest" title for things like his mother's death.

Oh, yeah, that was a publicity stunt, wasn't it?

By the way, the Hurricane Katrina comments were very positive for a lot of us.

I am not one to give an opinion on editorials and I will refrain from doing so at this time. If I had half the talent Mr. West has at producing music and writing lyrics I might be a little cocky too. All I know is that when I nearly lost my life in 2003, Through the Wire was my saving grace and eventually became my theme song for my life.

Mr. West is phenomenal in what he does and deserves his credit. Oh, and using the loss of his mother as a wack moment,I feel, is in very poor taste.

Maybe if he didn't choose to be so arrogant and show it on live television in front of millions of people, he might get the respect he deserves. Nobody likes a bragger.

4. walter -
rap sucks, and he doesnt have much talent, but at least hes not boring

5. Juan Alvarez -
George Bush doesn't care about black people lol

6. lost_blackcat -
I think almost all of these editorials I read here are in poor taste.

7. Shadoe -
He's just ok.

He's arrogant arse.

Nuff said.

8. SoulPhlower -
I guess Billy didn't have anything else to talk about in regards to Kanye. It looks like he tried really hard to piece together a piece but to me it was a failed attempt. The thing about his mom is in bad taste. The thing about paparazzi is not anything different than any other star experienced. the thing with Gretchen was basically posted twice, basically it could have been one post. The thing about him getting a record deal after his accident to me was not wack at all. It was a great song and he must have amazing work ethic to record with his jaw wired. And it was creative and different. And he made 3 videos for one song and one with an old school Jesus. So, people make video that look like pilots for mini-series. They make videos that make no sense. So!

I don't disagree that Kanye is arrogant and maybe even selfish...but this article was pointless in my opinion.

He is an excellent writer/producer.He is different, SO WHAT... He don't have to fit everybodys mold.

10. your daddy -
I love Kanye, I'm one of his biggest fan, and I will always be one of hs supporters, putting his mom's death on here as wacky is just rude.

11. April H -
Woooooow! are ya'll serious? Wackest moments. I'm sorry I don't understand. Having 3 videos for "jesus Walks" was exactly what we needed, because there are so many interpretations of that expression anyways. I think he was doing something positive for a change, and something different-I enjoyed the "literal" Jesus Walks" video as I enjoyed all 3.

About the Katrina Incident, I dont even think it was an incident. It was just someone who actually said what they mean instead of being fake about what really went one with Katrina. I mean we can send 1 Billion to Georgia, but not rush to a state in our own country?

Also, He's right I didnt even like that %0 cent and Justin Timberlake song that year...Kanye Was Hott that year.

His mother being a wack moment tsk tsk tsk....I dont understand, someone should have edited this piece of crap. I think its very disrespectful to his mother! Very!

Anyway I think Kanye has the right to act like he do, The dud is hot right now. He never dissapoints! And If a dude had a camera in my face 7 o'clock in the morning I'd be pissed off 2!

12. FlapDaddy -
Stupid Jamoke...this guy is a clown as are most of his ilk. Not worthy of my time...

13. chiefs_nation1 -
Kanye West is a legend in his own mind. His incredibly overblown ego and arrogance far outweighs any talent he might possess.

In short, Kanye seriously needs to get over himself...

14. buckeyesfan74 -
Wow Clyde Smith you're stupid. How the hell were the comments positive? Go kiss your Kanye West poster on your wall.

15. Moon -
no ones perfect,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

16. thefreshflow -
The only thing worse than being cocky is being a crybaby. Unfortunately, Kanye just happens to be both.

17. Regine W -
wOW i DONT SEE HOW LOSING YOUR MOM AND ALMOST DYING IS BEING A CRY BABY BUT OKAY. . . KANYE DOESNT RAP ABOUT BEING POOR, IN ONE HIS SONGS "And I ain't sayin' we was from the projects. . ." SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEARN ABOUT WHAT U TALKIN ABOUT B4 U SPEAK OK?

18. Sorry but I gotta go for now -
Kanye is such a baby. I love his music but these 10 ain't the only times he's acted like a kid.
It's not all about him. And it shouldn't.
I will give him credit for speaking his mind. Going off the teleprompter during the "Hurricane Katrina" benefit was what America needed to hear during that time and it's about time an artist spoke up instead of caring how they look. Kinda ironic considering it was Kanye.
Peace

We all know he's arrogant but he IS good at what he does. Let him cry and whimper. It's what celebs do best. As long as he keeps making great music, I don't care what he does.

20. Sara S -
I dont care how big you are... and how great of an artist u are... You just dont do those kinds of things... he is ruining is career...I mean you would think someone who had all most lost his life and with his mother dead he would be humble.. but i guess fame does that to people
