Kanye's Most Extreme Moments

Posted Sat Sep 13, 2008 9:26am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

In these days of the popularity of tabloid journalism it's quite easy for a celebrity like Kanye West to have his art overshadowed by the antics of his personal life. Since the release of his 2004 debut, The College Dropout, the Chicago-bred rapper has been fortunate to have enough good music in the marketplace to remain relevant based on his talent.

But to some, he is best known for his incidences, like Thursday's widely covered run-in with the paparazzi while at the Los Angeles International Airport en route to Hawaii or one of his numerous outbursts at award shows.

Below are 10 of Kanye's Most Extreme Moments. The list includes moments of his extreme brilliance, uncontrollable utterances (good and bad) and even a horrible tragedy that is clearly the wackest thing that could happen to anyone. The latter is proof that he isn't always the perpetrator but sometimes a victim himself.

10) Jesus Literally Walks With Kanye
Kanye made three videos for his heralded track "Jesus Walks." Version 3 is the most shocking. The video offers a literal interpretation of the song. It's hilarious watching Kanye walking down the street accompanied by Jesus, who is wearing a toga, sandals and the crown of thorns. I don't think anyone was expecting this or any other rapper would produce something this compelling.

9) Kanye Finally Wins
After making a spectacle of himself at the American Music Awards when he lost the Best New Artist honor to country singer Gretchen Wilson, many wondered how Kanye would respond at the 2005 Grammys. Fortunately, his debut The College Dropout received two trophies that night, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. When Kanye took the stage to receive the Best Rap Album honor he said, "A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn't win anything ... I guess we'll never know." And we didn't want to know.

8) Bonnaroo Boos Kanye
The thousands of fans who turned out for Kanye's early morning performance on June 15 at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee were livid that the show started 2 hours late. The crowd booed and threw bottles, and even dissed Kanye the following days during sets for Zach Rogue and Robert Randolph. Kanye posted a blog on his website, saying that the delay wasn't his fault. He blamed the festival for not being able to accommodate his set up requirements and a Pearl Jam show that exceeded its time by an hour.

 7) Kanye Gets Justice
Obviously determined to upstage any of his previous award show tantrums, Kanye West bum rushed the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen when he did not receive the Best Video award for his video "Touch The Sky." Kanye rudely interrupted Justice vs. Simian's acceptance speech for their video "We Are Your Friends." In Kanye's clip, he took on an Evil Knievel like persona, kissed Pamela Anderson and had a verbal showdown with Nia Long. Even though Kanye admitted that he had never seen the Justice vs. Simian video, he didn't need to. Actually, it is pretty bad.

6) Kanye Gets Beat By A Redneck Woman
Poor Gretchen Wilson's big American Music Award win for Best New Artist is overshadowed by Kanye's protest for losing. Not only did Kanye storm out of the event, he lashed out backstage. "I feel I was definitely robbed," Kanye told the Associated Press. "I was the best new artist this year." He later apologized to Gretchen.

5) Kanye Curses The VMAs
Britney Spear's sloppy opening performance for MTV's 2007 VMA awards may be the most memorable event from the night, but Kanye's backstage tirade is just as unforgettable. Not only did Kanye not win any of the five VMA awards for which he was nominated, he was also relegated to performing in a hotel suite, as opposed to the main stage. When he saw Justin Timberlake take the main stage, Kanye went ballistic, cursing the cable network and vowing to never return. Fortunately the ordeal was caught on tape.

4) Kanye's 9/11 Airport Fiasco
It seems a bit unreal that Kanye--of all people--would now have on record his own airport troubles on 9/11. On Thursday, Kanye got into a scuffle with a paparazzi that resulted in an arrest. After Kanye's road manager told the photographer to stop photographing him to no avail, Kanye and his road manager commandeered the photographer's equipment and smashed it dead. Kanye and his accomplice were arrested and faced charges of felony vandalism.

3) Kanye Looks Out For Hurricane Katrina Victims
Watching the news coverage of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina made a huge impact on Kanye. While taping a live Concert For Hurricane Relief telethon, Kanye ignored the teleprompter and offered impromptu and controversial words. He complained that the victims were not receiving adequate help and were portrayed on the news as looters. He concluded his remarks with an accusation that shocked viewers: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

2) Kanye Escapes Death
Before Kanye launched his solo career, he experienced a near fatal car accident. He had fallen asleep while driving after leaving an extended recording session. The accident left him badly injured, but with his mouth stilled wired shut, he documented the tragedy in song. The positive reaction to "Through The Wire" finally earned him a record deal with Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records.

1) Kanye Loses The Girl Who Knew Him Best
Few hip-hop artists show their mothers the type of affection Kanye bestowed upon Dr. Donda West. Though Kanye's off-the-cuff attitude has gotten him dismissed as selfish by many, fans and naysayers alike extended their sincere condolences when they learned that his mother had died suddenly on November 10, 2007. Because Dr. West passed away after undergoing plastic surgery there was speculation regarding the cause of death which was later determined to be heart disease. In addition to co-managing her son, Dr. West had also worked as a professor and former chairwoman of the Chicago State University English department.

Kanye West may be a great artist and producer but he needs to get his attitude in check. He has so much talent but then throws a fit if he doesn't win an award? Come on. Who cares if he is black, white, green or purple. He is a human being and thats the part that is arrogant about him. It's not a "black" thing. I wish all the people saying that his mom dying shouldn't be on her need to actually read the article. It says Kanye's most extreme moments good and bad. If this was about me, my parent dying would be one of my most extreme moments too.

By the way, I am from Biloxi, MS and we got the brunt of storm....but you never see the news talk about us. The only reason New Orleans got all the attention (not to mention the majority of Femas money) is because it was filled with looters, murders, and anything else to make "good tv". We, however, cleaned up, prospered, complained a lick and NEVER GOT SPECIAL TREATMENT unlike new orleans... so comments that kayne makes get under my skin so much because he has no idea what it was like nor does he know what he talking about.

to People like April H..please refrain from rendering your support to failures like kanye. He has no respect for other people, white or black! He dissed Bush in front of a charitable event. Bush has had his success and failures as well, but as a democrat, i know that he was elected and re-elected by many Americans. Blame yourselves and not Bush! kanye is stupid...i would like to fight him in the UFC because he annoys me by the way he mistrets people who are tryong to make ends meet

Kanye West is an extreme talent with a huge ego that overshadows his abilities. Granted, if I was doing half of the things he's done, I might get a little big headed too, but self-confidence is a great thing. When it takes the turn for arrogance, it's about time someone knocks some since into him

George Bush may or may not care about black people, but I can tell you one thing for certain. George Bush and his administration can't stand poor people, black or white.

He is VERY strange!

87. james -
REALLY???? i am a fan of all GOOD music not matter who makes it. but Kanye music reminds me of boy band music with almost no talent or substance. if y take away the millions hee uses to produce and make the albums i think it would be straight trash and not even make it on the radio let loan sell an album.

88. dee -
How are you going to take over someone's acceptance speech. Bragging about the cost of your video. them dudes should have gave kanye some music inspiration. Maybe- Thru the Wire 2! and save us all for acouple of months of his mouth.

89. andres -
kanye is wak as hell im from the chi and trust me he gets no love . he needs to stick to makin beats or whatever he does ,cuz it shirt aint rappin. hes a spoiled brat plain and simple! he cried(temper tantrum) his way into an award . for real tho the kid has no rhyme skills whatsoever ! i cant believe hiphop can be so desperate ..............

90. THE CATWHISPERER -
There are just some people in this world who really believe that no one but them has problems and only they are allowed to throw temper tantrums.

91. Trance -
Kanye is a talentless POS. Honestly I don't know why people like him. Guy has no class...no matter how much money he has. Rap in itself requires no true talent. As you can tell by most artists, you don't even need a good voice to rap.

92. Kerri -
Nothing but another monkey with a chip on his shoulder.Thinks the world owes him some kind of special treatment because of the color of his skin.Every bad thing that has ever happened is George Bushes fault. It has to be because he is white.Truth is, if all those lazy retards would have left New Orleans days before when the president told them to, it wouldn't have been one tenth as bad.But you cant expect intellegence from that group of people anyway. They were too busy trying to figure out what els they are owed without having to work for it!!

93. changename -
They have GOT to make a movie about this man's life. They've just got to. I wonder though, watching him, it's more like mentally he has no restraint or self-cobtrol. He does and says what he wants, but he's also extremely creative. I believe that he may just have a psychological disorder. Perhaps Histtrionic personality disorder or maybe Bipolar II Disorder.

94. chris -
oh thats right only black people lived in new orleans? werent they suppose to evacuate anyway, had the residents done like they were suppose to, it wouldnt be that big of a deal. i seriously doubt any one would stand in the road with a semi coming at them, so why would they stay knowing the hurricane was. it all boils down to dumb people making dumb decisions.

95. zoedevito@yahoo.com -
what is on this guys side is that if he didnt have a contract with his record company, which means he has some form of income, he would be in jail sucking wind without a straw....

96. christian james -
I can't believe people like him are worshipped. If he had no beat to sing to, he would sound nothing more than a homeless guy in the subway. Kanye has no class. period. We should be ashamed that these people are successful. This country is going so downhill.

97. Candace -
Kanye needs to stop acting 2 years old and grow up. The temper tantrums are annoying.

98. hannah -
I wish that people would stop talking about his music, whether you think it's good or bad doesn't matter. Focus on his BEHAVIOR. It doesn't matter how talented or untalented you are, there is never an excuse to act this way.

Same thing goes for race, while there have been a few racist comments on here (coming from whites and blacks), the majority of the negative comments re talking about his behavior. Just like talent, It doesn't matter whether you're black, white, Asian, Indian, hispanic, etc., it still doesn't give you the right to think you're better than anyone else. Everyone has different opinions on music - just because someone doesn't like rap, or Kanye's music in particular, doesn't make them a racist.

Lastly, if you want to be taken seriously, learn how to spell. Otherwise you will receive no credibility. You might as well say nothing.
