Kanye's Most Extreme Moments

Posted Sat Sep 13, 2008 9:26am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

In these days of the popularity of tabloid journalism it's quite easy for a celebrity like Kanye West to have his art overshadowed by the antics of his personal life. Since the release of his 2004 debut, The College Dropout, the Chicago-bred rapper has been fortunate to have enough good music in the marketplace to remain relevant based on his talent.

But to some, he is best known for his incidences, like Thursday's widely covered run-in with the paparazzi while at the Los Angeles International Airport en route to Hawaii or one of his numerous outbursts at award shows.

Below are 10 of Kanye's Most Extreme Moments. The list includes moments of his extreme brilliance, uncontrollable utterances (good and bad) and even a horrible tragedy that is clearly the wackest thing that could happen to anyone. The latter is proof that he isn't always the perpetrator but sometimes a victim himself.

10) Jesus Literally Walks With Kanye
Kanye made three videos for his heralded track "Jesus Walks." Version 3 is the most shocking. The video offers a literal interpretation of the song. It's hilarious watching Kanye walking down the street accompanied by Jesus, who is wearing a toga, sandals and the crown of thorns. I don't think anyone was expecting this or any other rapper would produce something this compelling.

9) Kanye Finally Wins
After making a spectacle of himself at the American Music Awards when he lost the Best New Artist honor to country singer Gretchen Wilson, many wondered how Kanye would respond at the 2005 Grammys. Fortunately, his debut The College Dropout received two trophies that night, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. When Kanye took the stage to receive the Best Rap Album honor he said, "A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn't win anything ... I guess we'll never know." And we didn't want to know.

8) Bonnaroo Boos Kanye
The thousands of fans who turned out for Kanye's early morning performance on June 15 at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee were livid that the show started 2 hours late. The crowd booed and threw bottles, and even dissed Kanye the following days during sets for Zach Rogue and Robert Randolph. Kanye posted a blog on his website, saying that the delay wasn't his fault. He blamed the festival for not being able to accommodate his set up requirements and a Pearl Jam show that exceeded its time by an hour.

 7) Kanye Gets Justice
Obviously determined to upstage any of his previous award show tantrums, Kanye West bum rushed the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen when he did not receive the Best Video award for his video "Touch The Sky." Kanye rudely interrupted Justice vs. Simian's acceptance speech for their video "We Are Your Friends." In Kanye's clip, he took on an Evil Knievel like persona, kissed Pamela Anderson and had a verbal showdown with Nia Long. Even though Kanye admitted that he had never seen the Justice vs. Simian video, he didn't need to. Actually, it is pretty bad.

6) Kanye Gets Beat By A Redneck Woman
Poor Gretchen Wilson's big American Music Award win for Best New Artist is overshadowed by Kanye's protest for losing. Not only did Kanye storm out of the event, he lashed out backstage. "I feel I was definitely robbed," Kanye told the Associated Press. "I was the best new artist this year." He later apologized to Gretchen.

5) Kanye Curses The VMAs
Britney Spear's sloppy opening performance for MTV's 2007 VMA awards may be the most memorable event from the night, but Kanye's backstage tirade is just as unforgettable. Not only did Kanye not win any of the five VMA awards for which he was nominated, he was also relegated to performing in a hotel suite, as opposed to the main stage. When he saw Justin Timberlake take the main stage, Kanye went ballistic, cursing the cable network and vowing to never return. Fortunately the ordeal was caught on tape.

4) Kanye's 9/11 Airport Fiasco
It seems a bit unreal that Kanye--of all people--would now have on record his own airport troubles on 9/11. On Thursday, Kanye got into a scuffle with a paparazzi that resulted in an arrest. After Kanye's road manager told the photographer to stop photographing him to no avail, Kanye and his road manager commandeered the photographer's equipment and smashed it dead. Kanye and his accomplice were arrested and faced charges of felony vandalism.

3) Kanye Looks Out For Hurricane Katrina Victims
Watching the news coverage of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina made a huge impact on Kanye. While taping a live Concert For Hurricane Relief telethon, Kanye ignored the teleprompter and offered impromptu and controversial words. He complained that the victims were not receiving adequate help and were portrayed on the news as looters. He concluded his remarks with an accusation that shocked viewers: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

2) Kanye Escapes Death
Before Kanye launched his solo career, he experienced a near fatal car accident. He had fallen asleep while driving after leaving an extended recording session. The accident left him badly injured, but with his mouth stilled wired shut, he documented the tragedy in song. The positive reaction to "Through The Wire" finally earned him a record deal with Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records.

1) Kanye Loses The Girl Who Knew Him Best
Few hip-hop artists show their mothers the type of affection Kanye bestowed upon Dr. Donda West. Though Kanye's off-the-cuff attitude has gotten him dismissed as selfish by many, fans and naysayers alike extended their sincere condolences when they learned that his mother had died suddenly on November 10, 2007. Because Dr. West passed away after undergoing plastic surgery there was speculation regarding the cause of death which was later determined to be heart disease. In addition to co-managing her son, Dr. West had also worked as a professor and former chairwoman of the Chicago State University English department.

I am not a fan of Mr. West. However, he has brought a new voice to hip-hop. His lyrics are positve, in a sea of negativity! He speaks his mind, and stays true to himself and his peers around him. In a world that buys and sells artists souls...he hasn't sold out..GOOD FOR HIM! As for the loss of his mother making the list...WOW! BAD TASTE! SHAME ON YOU!

I give him credit for being able to produce hits. Its not my type of music... but as for the person he is.. all I can say is WOW! Not only does he look like a idiot during the Katrina episode, with his hesitations, but it also shows his ignorace with his final comment. Someone give this man all the facts of Katrina... It was the mayors fault things didnt go very well in New Orleans with the rescue. oh wait wasnt he black man? kanye before you make comments on events get your facts. There might be a possiblilty you might sound smart. I believe all the videos shows how much of loser he is in more ways than one.

George Bush doesn't care about black people. It's true and I think it's wrong for people to shun kanye because he had the heart to say it! It's true and you can tell he doesn't George Bush is a racist liar who should have never been voted into office ans maybe america wouldn't be so damb confused about the war or katrina. Nobody knows how hard it is to be a different race and be followed around and looked at as a criminal unless you are so don't speak on stuff that you don't know about! Kanye was right and everybody who has a brain and isn't a racist know it.

Hi. The way I see is Kanyes is quite talented, has clear opinions, and has been through allot with his mom's recent passing.

As a white professional, I believe a black male often is labeled as "an angry black man" because he has had to overcome stereotypes and some people believing expressing an opinion or having boundaries is not normal. Also, he is young. He is learning how to find expression and influencing the masses with his audience and life.

I have to question if Paris, Britney, or Lindsey would be arrested for throwing a "in your face, trying to get a response" paparazzi's camera on the floor during the Totally Challenging Airline Check In Challenges we encounter during travel these days.

It seems to me limits are not respected anymore. So, I have to question our behaviors that won't let people express free speech and say NO more often to disrespectful people, while encouraging different points of view.

i dont think his mom's death should be in here, cuz most of us would go ballistic if something like that happened to our moms. besides that kanye is just another pompous hothead

Don't listen to this so-called "music" (for want of a better term). But I know a jerk when I see one. If he wasn't hero-worshipped nobody would give a crud what he did or said, like any supposed "celebrity." And PS: Katrina victoms were indeed a bunch of looters, and I didn't give a crap about them either.

148. Shantell -
I love Kanye West
So creative, confident, and not afrais to be different.

149. Yahoo! Music User -
change number one to, 1.) People actually listen to this idiots music.

150. jo -
Kanye just has a Napoleanic complex than far outweighs his talent, which is saying a lot.

After reading all of the comments on this subject...I am amazed at how racist EVERYBODY is. It's not just whites, it's blacks too. When are we going to stop pointing our fingers at each other, and try and move forward instead?! Isn't it time to grow up?

152. Yahoo! Music User -
yea who cares bout this, this is so pathetic that ppl gotta bag on celebs just to make life more meaning full. leave the poor guy alone, if it aint affecting u personally, then just leave it. geeze!

153. Gopher -
George Bush hates all Americans!!! either that or hes really really dumb.... huh

154. Courtney -
Can we say haters???? The man still hasn't dealt with one of the most tragic events in his life, the death of his mother. How dare u even put that as a whack Kanye moment. That is so disrespectful. So the man is different and is willing to speak his mind no matter what n e one thinks. Is that a crime? He thinks outside of the box which is the type of artist we need at this time. Jesus Walks was a phenomenol song and if u are too narrow minded to get what he's trying to say in the third video then that's ur problem.

Everybody wants to criticize him so hard for the "negative" things that they think he has done. Honestly I just feel like they're salty at the fact that a black man had the guts to say and do what they only wished the could.

Give the man his space. He needs time to heal and having the media all in his face only makes the situation worse and then u end up with incidents like the LAX one.

I don't know what to think about him. I do believe he is truly talented. I enjoy his voice and his right to express his opinion however I watched that Katrina outburst and felt it was a little ignorant. He has music to influence others. That program was meant to honor the victims and call help to the situation. He just needs to keep himself in check and if he truly loves Jesus and believes that He walks with him then he should listen to the Holy Spirit and read Proverbs 14:16, "A wise man fears the Lord and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless."

156. YOUHAVEPROBLEMS -
Music Talent? What uses a pre recorded what ever and talks into a microphone. I saw him perform in Atlanta once at Music Midtown and that is all he did. No band just him and an MC...

157. B -
I could have sworn the link to this story said "WACKIEST" as in crazy not WACK as in lame.

either way. Kanye..love ya as an artist but you are extremely arrogant at times; you need to come back down to earth. OH WELL- still buying your next album xD

158. Todd -

160. The Mad Hatter -
