Shontelle Helps Rihanna Represent For Barbados

Posted Thu Sep 18, 2008 6:00pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

So Rihanna's no longer the only Barbados beauty on the pop charts, though some of you may have heard Shontelle-ella-ella-ella-a's hot track "T-Shirt" on the air and thought it was Chris Brown's boo.

Rihanna's "Disturbia" is No. 1 and Shontelle's "T-Shirt" just moved up from No. 30 to No. 26 on the Top 40 chart.

We are premiering today the video for Shontelle's "T-Shirt," a sweet ballad about missing her man so much that she adorns herself in nothing but his T-Shirt to find comfort.

Wow, what a dedicated honey? Chris Brown should be so lucky.

In some of the video clips Shontelle also resembles Rihanna and it's mainly due to styling. Any opportunity to piggyback on Rihanna's marketing is a good one, right? You really can't be mad at Shontelle's people.

Ironically, Shontelle and Rihanna aren't strangers. Shontelle is from Saint James while Rihanna is from the neighboring northwest parish of Saint Michael. About two years ago they were featured on a song and video together. It was their fellow Caribbean artists J-Status' song "Roll It." J-Status was discovered by the same people who helped Rihanna get her start.

The "Roll It" video signals a couple interesting things.

1) Shontelle is the main feature. She's got the marquee spot, coming on in the beginning of the song and delivering a longer verse than Rihanna, who is featured at the end.

2) Shontelle's vocal style is much harder edged on "Roll It" than on "T-Shirt." She didn't appear as ferocious as Lady Saw or Patra, but Shontelle can bring the edge that Rihanna is missing.

If Shontelle has a Jay-Z in her corner, as did Rihanna, she should be able to bring some good solid competition to the marketplace, not that there isn't room for both.

Shontelle is backed by Steve Rifkin, the man who kicked open the doors for Akon. So Shontelle is in a good place. Let's see if she has more hits coming. I'm watching with interest.

Shontelle's song is the bomb- create your own path. both of our girls are continuing to represent beautiful Barbados really well

3. Chantell -
The only thfing they have in common is where they come from! If the title never sad Shontelle was from Barbados I never would have notice because she doesn't sound or look like Rihanna she has her own style!!

4. TabithaC -
what the world! these girl are polar opposites! no one is better than rihanna!

5. Susan -
jst because the are from the same place, doesnt mean the are similar.thats unless if she is imitating rihanna.

First impression of Shontelle the singer is her sultry vocals, which has striking similaries to successful R&B/pop sensation Rihanna. In fact, her vocal sounds almost identical to Rihanna vocals. In addition her premiere music video has an element to Rihanna's past 2006 hit video ''S.O.S'' especailly the scene where she's in a chair maneuvering her attractive body. While her debut single, ''T-Shirt'' demonstrates a woman who's deeply in love with her gentleman, so she can't help, but put on his white t-shirt and reminisce about him. I think we all want to see, what she has to offer to this music industry these days, which needs more authentic artists within it.

both bajan beauties are beautiful, close in age. shontelle is older, more experience, also a songwriter. there is room for both girls to mature and achieve their dreams. she can sing reggae and calypso as well. very talented.

Rihanna is at the best she has been so far....that ain't saying much. I love the new haircut and new style and even the new man...but talent? Please, let's be real. There is none there. And I want to like her but she's really bad...really.

19. Levelerheader -
I like both Rihanna and Shontelle.

However Shontelle seems more organic and authentic to me and we all know Rihanna is all commercial and mechanical.
