Fiddy vs. Kanye: Save A Rapper Buy A Cowboy

Posted Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:29pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Remember when Howard Stern launched a campaign last year to support the American Idol unhopeful Sanjaya Malkar?

Sure, Sanjaya didn't win. But all the hype got people upset and took some of the attention away from Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Daughtry.

Mission accomplished.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone did the same thing for Kenny Chesney, who goes head up against 50 Cent and Kanye West for best first week album sales for their 9/11 street date? Let's do it. After more than 30 years of mainstream success, I'd say it's about time for hip-hoppers to come up with another way to promote their music instead of sparking rivalries.

Here's why Hip Hoppers Should Support Kenny Chesnsey on 9/11:

- Kenny's no Sanjaya. He is a country music icon and could actually debut at No. 1. He has done it four other times.

- Sure it would have been more interesting if Keith Urban was coming out on September 11, considering his hip-hip demeanor--can't stay sober, cheats on his fine, superstar wife, etc. But truth be told, like most rappers, Kenny is no role model himself. Rene Zellweger kicked him to the curb after four months of marriage--much quicker than Diddy's three-time babymama did him. Kenny must have done something pretty good for sweet little Rene to resort to that.

- Kenny keeps it real. You know the cliché, you can take a person out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of a person? Well, this does not only apply to rappers. Big Ken has two houses in St. John's Virgin Islands and his favorite part of one of the houses is called the Executive Suite. When I saw the deathtrap located behind the house, I forgot that I was watching 60 Minutes and thought I was seeing an episode of MTV's My Block. Only someone with a rapper-like street cred obsessed mentality would add that type of element to a vacation home Caribbean getaway.

- While the Shop Boyz brag that they party like rock stars, Kenny's music videos prove that he can party like a rapper. In most of his videos, he's on a beach, with a beer in one hand, and fly chick in the other. Remember the "When The Sun Goes Down" video with Uncle Kracker? The scene with all those girls piling out of the Volkswagen station wagon is dead on a scene from a Snoop Dogg clip.

- Doesn't 50 Cent going after Kanye take you back to 2002, when he used ruining Ja Rule's career as the springboard to promote Get Rich Or Die Tryin'?

- If Kanye comes in at No. 1, I'd hate to hear the remix for "Can't Tell Me Nothin'."

- If 50 does not debut at the top, I want to see if he will really retire.

- Plus, Kenny is from Knoxville, TN. And everybody knows that the Dirty South runs this mother...

While I'm gunning for Kenny, we are taking a 50 vs Kanye poll. Definitely make sure you vote.

honestly, i ain't worried bout if 50 is gonna out sell kanye or vice versa. i'm not gettin' niether cd. as far as 50 goes, he's doin' the same thing ja rule does on this next cd so not only does he "snitch", a fake gangsta/thug, but he contradicted himself 100%. for kanye, he's still got that huge ego so you know if he does a remix for can't tell me nothin' it's gonna deal with his big head. for keith, he has a whole bunch of country music fans that will probably buy his cd like crazy. who knows, he might just out due both 50 and kanye.

dude why cant you break the cycle and yes 50 and kanye already have hype and publicity but elevate peoples mind to Common, Speech, Kool Keith, MF DOOM, Little Brother, Phonte, Pidgeon John, Pharcyde, Blackalicious, ROOTS, MURS, etc...

i appreciate the comparison in your opening line...but sanjaya wasn't even on the same season as taylor hicks, katherine mcphee or daughtry...i think you mean melinda doolittle, lakisha jones, and jordin sparks or something...

After listening to both 50 and Kanye, here's what i come up with. You really can't compare them, two different styles. however, if you are a 50 fan, you'll like his cd, if you're a kanye fan you'll like his, but head to head...i think kanye got this beat. He has some new material and beats, where 50 is still rappin about the same stuff that he started with back in the day. Dont get me wrong, it's a good CD, but...that stuff gets old.. Now i'm just waiting to see if he really gives up after kanye beats him in sales, which he is as of right now. Winner, Kanye. Sorry 50.

15. UBOR_L (NESTER T) The two of them are big time artist, but the credit i gibe to 2pac when he was alive or not have been extented 50 and his G UNIT, so whether Kanye sells more than 50 i still see 50 ontop .
